Introduction
One-Point Perspective is a drawing method that helps you make a flat picture look as if it has real depth. It is especially useful when you draw a road, hallway, room, railway, or row of buildings that seems to move straight away from you. In one-point perspective, receding parallel edges appear to head toward one shared vanishing point on the horizon line.

The Big Idea: Making Depth on Flat Paper
A sheet of paper has height and width, but a real place also has depth. Perspective is one way to show that depth. Objects that are farther away usually appear smaller. Repeating objects, such as lamps, windows, fence posts, or floor tiles, may also seem closer together as they move into the distance.
A photograph can show the effect clearly. In this road scene, the sides of the road seem to move toward the same distant area.

Important safety rule: Never stand on railway tracks or in a road to take a perspective photograph. Use safe places such as a sidewalk, school corridor, park path, pedestrian area, or a photo that already exists.
Horizon Line
The horizon line represents the viewer's eye level. Outdoors, it may be close to the place where land or sea seems to meet the sky, but in a room the horizon line is imaginary. You can still draw it across the page to show how high the viewer's eyes are.
Try this: sit on the floor and look down a hallway. Then stand up and look again. Your eye level changes, so the horizon line in a drawing would change too.
Vanishing Point
The vanishing point is the point where receding parallel lines appear to meet in a perspective drawing. One-point perspective uses one main vanishing point for lines that travel directly away from you.
The point does not mean that the real road, walls, or tracks actually meet. It is a visual effect caused by distance.

Receding Lines
Lines that move away from the viewer are often called receding lines or orthogonal lines in perspective drawing. In one-point perspective, these lines aim toward the vanishing point.
Examples include the side edges of a road, the top and bottom edges of a hallway wall, the sides of ceiling panels, or the depth edges of a box.
How to Draw One-Point Perspective
You need paper, a pencil, an eraser, and a ruler or straightedge. Colored pencils or markers are optional.

- Draw the horizon line: Make a light horizontal line across the paper.

- Draw the back wall: Make a rectangle around the vanishing point.

- Add furniture: Begin with simple rectangles, then send their depth edges toward the vanishing point.

Perspective works because the picture changes as objects appear farther away.
Size change: Similar objects usually look smaller in the distance.
Spacing change: Equal gaps in real life can look shorter and closer together farther away.
Overlap: A nearer object can cover part of a farther object.

Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
