Morphology and Syntax



Introduction

Morphology and syntax are two central domains of linguistics. Morphology investigates the internal structure of words and the principles by which word forms and new lexemes are built. Syntax investigates how words and other units combine into phrases, clauses, and sentences. In actual language use, the two systems are tightly connected: inflectional morphology can express grammatical information that syntax also depends on, while syntactic environments can determine which morphological forms are required.

Morphology: The Structure of Words


Morphemes, Roots, Stems, and Bases

A morpheme is commonly described as the smallest linguistic unit that contributes meaning or grammatical function. A free morpheme can occur as an independent word in a given context, whereas a bound morpheme must occur as part of a larger form. In English, book can occur independently, but plural -s cannot. This distinction is useful, but it does not mean that every word can be divided into a simple chain of clearly separable pieces.

A root carries central lexical content and is not further analyzed into smaller morphological elements within the analysis being used. A base is any form to which a morphological operation applies. A stem is the form to which inflectional morphology is attached. These terms sometimes overlap, so you should define them explicitly when presenting an analysis.

Consider independently. A plausible analysis builds the word through several ordered steps rather than treating all affixes as attaching simultaneously.

Morphological structure is therefore hierarchical. Bracketing matters: a complex word can contain smaller constituents whose combinations determine both meaning and category.


Allomorphy and Morphological Realization

A single morpheme can have more than one phonological realization. These variants are allomorphs. English plural marking, for example, is pronounced differently in cats, dogs, and buses, even though the forms realize the same plural function. Some alternations are phonologically conditioned; others are lexically or morphologically conditioned.

Morphological analysis should distinguish the abstract grammatical function from its surface realization. This distinction becomes especially important in languages with extensive inflection, where one exponent may realize several grammatical features at once or where a feature may be expressed without a simple segmentable affix.


Inflection and Derivation

Inflection typically creates different grammatical forms of the same lexeme. English walk, walks, walked, and walking are related by inflectional categories. Derivation typically creates a new lexeme, often with a new meaning and sometimes with a different lexical category: happy can become happiness, and modern can become modernize.

The distinction is not always absolute across languages or theories. Useful diagnostics include productivity, semantic regularity, category change, obligatoriness in syntactic environments, and position relative to other affixes. None of these diagnostics should be treated as infallible in isolation.

Word-Formation Processes

Languages create lexemes through many processes. Common mechanisms include affixation, compounding, conversion, reduplication, clipping, blending, and borrowing. English blackbird illustrates compounding; email used as a verb illustrates conversion; brunch illustrates blending.

Morphological productivity is gradient. A pattern may be available for new words but restricted by phonology, semantics, lexical competition, register, or historical convention. Your analysis should therefore distinguish a rule that is structurally possible from a pattern that speakers actually use productively.


Morphological Typology

Languages differ in how much grammatical information tends to be packaged inside words. Analytic languages rely relatively more on separate words and syntactic constructions. Synthetic languages encode more grammatical information within words. Agglutinative systems tend to use sequences of comparatively separable exponents, while fusional systems often use exponents that realize several features together. Polysynthetic languages may construct very complex words corresponding to what other languages express with larger syntactic units.

These labels describe tendencies, not pure categories. A single language may use different strategies in different parts of its grammar.


Syntax: The Structure of Phrases and Sentences


Categories, Constituents, and Heads

Syntax analyzes how expressions form larger hierarchical units. Lexical categories include nouns, verbs, adjectives, and prepositions, while phrasal categories include noun phrases, verb phrases, adjective phrases, and prepositional phrases. A constituent is a unit that behaves as a structural group within a larger expression.

Many theories identify a head as the element that determines important properties of the phrase. In the noun phrase the careful student of syntax, the noun student is the lexical head. The phrase can contain dependents such as determiners, modifiers, complements, and adjuncts.


Constituency Tests

Constituency is not directly visible in the linear string, so linguists use diagnostics. A sequence that can be replaced by a pro-form, moved as a unit, coordinated with another expression of the same type, or serve as a short answer may be a constituent. For example, the new textbook can be replaced by it in many contexts.

However, constituency tests are not mechanical proofs. Information structure, idioms, ellipsis, prosody, and construction-specific restrictions can produce misleading results. Strong analysis combines several diagnostics with a theory of the grammar.


Phrase Structure and Dependency

Constituency-based approaches represent nested phrases. Dependency approaches represent direct head–dependent relations among words. The two perspectives can describe many of the same observations while highlighting different structural properties.

When comparing theories, separate empirical claims from representational conventions. Two diagrams may look very different even when they capture overlapping generalizations about which elements depend on which.


Phrase Structure Rules and Recursion

A phrase structure grammar can state regularities such as a clause containing a noun phrase and a verb phrase, or a noun phrase containing a determiner and a noun. Modern syntactic theories often use more abstract mechanisms than simple rewrite rules, but the central idea of hierarchical combination remains essential.

Recursion allows a unit to contain another unit of the same general type. For example, a noun phrase can contain a prepositional phrase that itself contains another noun phrase. Recursion contributes to the open-ended productivity of human language, although actual utterances are limited by memory, processing, context, and communicative needs.


Structural Ambiguity

A string can have more than one syntactic structure. In I saw the student with the telescope, the prepositional phrase with the telescope can modify the seeing event or the student, depending on context. This is a structural ambiguity because the alternative interpretations correspond to different attachments.

Syntactic trees make hierarchical hypotheses explicit. They are analytical models rather than pictures of sentences that can be read off the surface.


Grammatical Relations and Valency

Traditional grammatical functions include subject, object, and predicate, but their formal properties vary across languages. A verb's valency concerns the arguments it licenses or requires. Sleep is commonly analyzed as intransitive, while devour typically requires an object in ordinary transitive uses.

Distinguish arguments from adjuncts. Arguments are selected more closely by a head, while adjuncts contribute optional modification. This distinction is important for both syntactic analysis and the morphology–syntax interface because valency-changing morphology can alter a predicate's argument structure.


The Morphology–Syntax Interface

Morphology and syntax overlap in phenomena often grouped under morphosyntax. A language may express grammatical relations through word order, morphology, syntactic position, agreement, case marking, or combinations of these resources.


Agreement and Feature Sharing

Agreement occurs when the form of one element systematically reflects grammatical features associated with another. In English present-tense clauses, third-person singular subjects usually correlate with verbal -s, as in the student reads. In languages with richer agreement, verbs may reflect person, number, gender, noun class, or combinations of features.

A useful analysis distinguishes the feature from the morphological exponent. Number is a grammatical feature; plural -s is one possible realization of number in English nouns. Syntactic structure determines which elements stand in relevant relations, while morphology determines how features may be overtly expressed.


Case and Grammatical Relations

Case morphology can mark relationships involving nouns and noun phrases. English retains visible case contrasts most clearly in pronouns, as in she versus her. Other languages have larger case systems that mark functions or semantic roles through inflection.

Case and word order can interact. A language with extensive case marking may permit more word-order variation than English, but this is a tendency rather than a universal rule. Word order can also encode information structure, discourse functions, or scope.


Tense, Aspect, Mood, and Finiteness

Tense, aspect, and mood can be expressed morphologically, syntactically, or both. English past tense may be realized on a lexical verb, while future time often involves auxiliaries or contextual interpretation. Finiteness can influence agreement, clause type, subject licensing, and complement selection.

The relation between form and function is therefore many-to-many: one grammatical meaning can have several structural realizations, and one form can participate in several grammatical contrasts.


Valency-Changing Morphology

Some languages use morphology to change the mapping between semantic participants and syntactic arguments. Causatives can introduce a causer; applicatives can promote a participant such as a beneficiary or instrument; passive constructions can reduce or reorganize the prominence of an external argument. Depending on the language, these operations may be primarily morphological, syntactic, or constructional.

This area is especially useful for comparative analysis because it shows why morphology cannot always be treated as a self-contained word-building component.


Word Order and Morphological Richness

English relies heavily on word order to distinguish many grammatical relations. Other languages may use richer case or agreement morphology, but there is no simple equation in which more morphology automatically means free word order. Typological claims require broad evidence and careful definitions.

When analyzing a language you do not know, avoid translating its structures directly into English categories. Start from the language's own distributional and morphological evidence.


Analytical Methods for University-Level Linguistics


Segmentation and Glossing

A morphological analysis begins by comparing related forms. You identify recurring pieces, propose their functions, and test the proposal against additional data. In cross-linguistic work, linguists often use interlinear glossed text to align a source-language form, a morpheme-by-morpheme gloss, and an idiomatic translation.

Good segmentation is hypothesis-driven. A repeated string is not automatically a morpheme, and a meaningful distinction is not necessarily represented by a separate segment.


Building Morphological Trees

Morphological trees represent hierarchical word formation. If unhappiness is analyzed as unhappy plus -ness, the structure differs from an impossible analysis in which un- attaches to happiness with the same intended meaning. Selectional restrictions and semantic compositionality help determine the structure.

A strong analysis states why one bracketing is preferred and what predictions it makes about category and meaning.


Building Syntactic Trees

Before drawing a syntactic tree, identify lexical categories, locate likely heads, test constituent boundaries, and determine which phrases are complements or modifiers. A tree should represent an argument, not merely decorate a sentence.

Advanced syntactic theories may differ about functional projections, empty categories, movement, or the exact geometry of trees. Your task is to keep the assumptions consistent and to connect structural claims to observable evidence.


Movement and Long-Distance Dependencies

Questions, relative clauses, and other constructions can involve dependencies between an overt expression and a structurally related position. Different theories model these relations in different ways, including movement, feature passing, or constructional constraints.

Do not treat arrows or traces as data themselves. The data are patterns such as interpretation, distribution, locality restrictions, and interactions with other grammatical processes. The notation is a theoretical device used to account for those patterns.


Corpus and Experimental Evidence

University-level grammatical analysis can combine introspective judgments with corpus data, acceptability experiments, fieldwork, and psycholinguistic evidence. Corpora show attested usage and frequency, but absence from a corpus does not prove ungrammaticality. Acceptability judgments can reveal contrasts, but they can also be influenced by context, processing, register, prescriptive expectations, and participant variation.

A robust study states the research question, data source, analytical criteria, and limitations. It distinguishes grammaticality, acceptability, frequency, and stylistic preference rather than treating them as identical.
