Introduction

Making Inferences from Text is a core reading comprehension skill. It helps you understand ideas that an author suggests without stating them directly. When you infer, you combine evidence from the text with relevant background knowledge and explain the reasoning that connects them.

This aiMOOC is designed for Grades 7–8 English and language arts. You will practise making, testing, comparing, and revising inferences in literary, informational, and argumentative texts. You will also learn to separate a reasonable inference from an unsupported guess.

Think like a careful detective. A detective does not decide what happened from one random detail; a detective gathers clues, looks for patterns, considers alternative explanations, and checks whether the conclusion fits the evidence.

Learning Goals

By the end of this aiMOOC, you should be able to explain what an inference is, distinguish explicit information from implicit meaning, identify strong textual evidence, connect clues to relevant background knowledge, infer character motives and emotions, infer causes and effects, interpret tone and viewpoint, use context clues to infer word meaning, compare alternative interpretations, and explain how confident you are in an inference.

A strong reader does not only state a conclusion. A strong reader can answer three questions: What do I think? What evidence supports it? Why does that evidence lead to this conclusion?


What Is an Inference?

An inference is a conclusion reached from evidence and reasoning. In reading, you often infer because writers do not state every connection, emotion, cause, motive, or implication. Text inferencing helps you connect ideas within a passage and connect the passage with relevant prior knowledge.

A magnifying glass is another useful symbol for inference. Close reading means examining exact words, details, contrasts, repetitions, and changes instead of relying on a first impression.

Consider this short example:

Text: Lena stepped onto the bus, shook water from her hood, and folded a dripping umbrella before sitting down.

Explicit information: Lena has a wet hood and a dripping umbrella.

Reasonable inference: It has probably been raining.

Reasoning: Wet outdoor clothing and a dripping umbrella are clues commonly connected with rain. The inference is not written directly, but several details support it.

An inference is not the same as certainty. A different explanation might sometimes fit the clues. Good readers use words such as probably, likely, suggests, or may indicate when the evidence does not prove the conclusion completely.


Explicit Information, Inference, and Guess

These three ideas are easy to confuse.

A guess may turn out to be true, but truth by accident is not the same as strong reasoning. In school reading tasks, your job is usually to choose the interpretation best supported by the available text.


The Core Formula

A useful classroom formula is:

Text evidence + relevant background knowledge + reasoning = inference

The formula does not mean that every piece has equal weight. The text must remain the anchor. Background knowledge helps you understand the clues, but it should not replace them.

The iceberg image can represent the difference between what is visible on the surface and what must be worked out beneath the surface. Text Evidence

Text evidence is the exact information that supports your conclusion. Evidence may be a word, phrase, action, description, comparison, statistic, example, sequence of events, or contrast.

Strong evidence is specific and relevant. Saying “the paragraph made me think so” is weak because it does not identify the clue. Saying “the narrator checks the locked door three times and keeps looking over her shoulder” is stronger because it points to observable details.

When you cite evidence, you can quote a short phrase or paraphrase the detail accurately. Do not twist a quotation so that it says more than the passage supports.


Relevant Background Knowledge

Background knowledge is what you already know about language, people, places, situations, genres, or the world. It helps you interpret clues.

For example, if a character whispers in a library, you may connect the action with your knowledge that libraries are often quiet spaces. If an informational text says roads are glazed and temperatures stayed below freezing, your knowledge about ice helps you infer a risk of slippery travel.

Background knowledge must be relevant. Personal assumptions and stereotypes are not reliable substitutes for evidence. If your prior belief conflicts with the text, return to the text and reassess.


Reasoning: The Missing Bridge

Reasoning explains why the evidence supports the inference. It is the bridge between clue and conclusion.

Weak response: Noah is nervous because I think he is.

Better response: Noah is probably nervous because he keeps rubbing his hands, rereads the first sentence of his speech, and asks whether his name has been called yet. These repeated actions suggest anxiety before speaking in public.

The second response is stronger because it identifies several clues and explains their connection to the conclusion.


A Reliable Inference Process

Use this process when a question asks what a passage suggests, implies, indicates, or allows you to conclude.

  1. Close reading: Read the relevant section carefully and identify what is stated directly.
  2. Text evidence: Mark two or more details that seem important.
  3. Background knowledge: Ask what relevant knowledge helps you interpret those details.
  4. Reasoning: Explain how the clues connect to a conclusion.
  5. Critical thinking: Check whether another explanation fits the evidence better.
  6. Reading comprehension: State the best-supported inference and qualify it if uncertainty remains.

This is not a mechanical rule. Some strong inferences rest on one decisive clue, while others require a pattern across several paragraphs.

Making Inferences in Literary Texts

Stories, plays, and poems often communicate meaning indirectly. Authors may reveal a character through actions rather than labels, create an atmosphere through setting details, or suggest a theme through patterns that develop across the whole text.


Inferring Character Emotions

A narrator does not always write “Amir was embarrassed.” Instead, you might read: “Amir stared at the floor, pulled his sleeves over his hands, and waited until everyone else had left.”

You can infer embarrassment, discomfort, or anxiety, but you should not pretend that one interpretation is certain unless later evidence confirms it. Ask which emotion best explains the cluster of actions.

Facial expression can be one clue to emotion in visual communication, but a single expression is not proof of a person’s inner state. The same caution applies to literary characters: combine several clues and use context.


Inferring Character Motives

A motive is a reason for an action. Motives are often implied.

Example: Keisha tells her friend, “You should probably keep the receipt,” immediately after the friend buys an expensive second-hand tablet.

Possible inference: Keisha doubts that the tablet will work reliably.

Evidence: Her warning focuses on returning the purchase, and it comes immediately after the purchase.

Alternative inference: Keisha may simply be cautious about expensive items.

A strong reader keeps the alternative in mind until more evidence appears.


Inferring Relationships

Relationships can be inferred from dialogue, shared history, power differences, forms of address, and reactions.

If one character says, “You still organize your pencils by color before every test,” the word still suggests previous knowledge of the person’s habits. That can support an inference that the characters have known each other for some time.

Do not infer a specific relationship such as sibling, cousin, or best friend unless the text provides enough evidence.


Inferring Setting and Atmosphere

Authors can imply setting through objects, weather, sounds, routines, and vocabulary.

Text: Metal shutters rattled above the empty storefronts. A tram bell sounded two streets away, and Nia tightened her scarf as she crossed the square.

You might infer an urban setting and cold or windy weather. The tram and storefronts suggest a town or city; the rattling shutters and scarf suggest wind or cold.

Atmosphere is the feeling created by the text. Empty storefronts, rattling metal, and a cold square might create an uneasy or lonely atmosphere, depending on the surrounding passage.


Inferring Tone and Attitude

Tone is the attitude conveyed by a writer or speaker. Tone may be inferred from word choice, sentence structure, imagery, exaggeration, understatement, and contrast.

Text: “Perfect,” Jonah muttered as the printer displayed its third error message.

The literal word perfect is positive, but the verb muttered and the repeated error messages suggest an ironic or frustrated tone. Readers must interpret the word in context rather than in isolation.


Inferring Theme

A theme is a broader idea about life, choices, relationships, society, or human experience that a text develops. A theme is not usually proved by one sentence.

Suppose a story repeatedly shows characters hiding small mistakes, causing larger problems, and finally repairing trust by admitting the truth. A supported theme might be that honesty is necessary for rebuilding trust.

Avoid one-word themes such as “friendship” when the task asks for an idea. “Friendship” is a topic. “Friendship becomes stronger when people communicate honestly during conflict” is a thematic statement that can be tested against the story.


Making Inferences in Informational Texts

Informational texts also leave connections unstated. Readers may need to infer causes, consequences, significance, or relationships among facts.


Cause and Effect

Text: The school added covered bicycle parking in September. By November, the number of students cycling to school had increased, while the number of bicycles left in the rain had fallen.

A reasonable inference is that the covered parking may have encouraged some students to cycle. However, the passage does not prove that the parking was the only cause. Weather, fuel prices, a cycling campaign, or other factors could also matter.

Strong readers distinguish between evidence of association and proof of cause.


Significance of Data

Statistics often require interpretation.

Text: In a survey of 300 students, 72 percent said they preferred receiving assignment reminders two days before a deadline rather than on the morning the work was due.

A reasonable inference is that an earlier reminder would match the preference of most students in this surveyed group.

An unsupported inference would be that all teenagers everywhere prefer exactly two days of notice. The sample described in the text does not justify such a broad conclusion.


Author Viewpoint and Purpose

Writers make choices about which details to include, which words to use, and how to organize information. These choices can suggest viewpoint or purpose.

If an article about a new park repeatedly emphasizes cost, maintenance, and tax impact while giving little space to recreation or environmental benefits, you might infer that the writer is especially concerned about financial consequences. You should support this with repeated textual patterns, not with assumptions about the writer as a person.

Author’s purpose may include informing, explaining, arguing, evaluating, entertaining, or combining several purposes.


Using Context Clues to Infer Meaning

You can also infer the meaning of an unfamiliar word from context. Look at definitions, examples, synonyms, antonyms, causes, effects, and the overall meaning of the sentence or paragraph.

Example: The hikers were parched. They had finished their water hours earlier, and each person searched the map for the nearest stream.

Even if you do not know the word parched, the clues about having no water and seeking a stream suggest that it means extremely thirsty or dry.

Then test your inferred meaning by replacing the unfamiliar word with your proposed meaning. If the sentence still makes sense, your inference is more likely to be correct.

The Khan Academy context-clue lesson above shows how surrounding words and sentences can help you determine meaning. Context clues support vocabulary inference, but a dictionary or glossary can be used to verify your conclusion when needed.


Building and Testing Inferences

An inference becomes stronger when several independent clues point in the same direction.

Imagine this passage:

Text: At 7:55, Mr. Chen unlocked the classroom and switched on only the lamp beside his desk. He placed two mugs on the table, checked the hallway twice, and looked at his phone when the clock reached eight.

Possible inference: Mr. Chen is expecting another person.

Evidence: He prepares two mugs, checks the hallway, and watches the time.

Reasoning: These actions form a pattern of preparation and waiting.

Alternative: He may simply be following a morning routine.

The first inference is stronger because the two mugs and repeated hallway checks specifically suggest another person, but the conclusion is still not absolutely certain.


Strong, Medium, and Weak Support

You can think about confidence in three levels.

Level What the evidence looks like Useful language
Strong support Several specific clues point toward the same conclusion and alternatives fit poorly strongly suggests or very likely
Medium support Some clues support the conclusion but another explanation is plausible probably or likely
Weak support Evidence is limited, vague, or only loosely connected may suggest or possible

Your confidence should match the evidence. Do not write “proves” when the passage only suggests.


Alternative Inferences

Some passages reasonably support more than one interpretation. Good readers compare them.

Ask: Which inference explains the greatest number of details? Which inference requires the fewest unsupported assumptions? Which inference remains consistent with later information? Which inference best fits the author’s exact wording?

This process is especially important in ambiguous stories, poetry, opinion writing, and historical sources.


Revising an Inference

An inference is a working conclusion, not a promise that you can never change your mind.

Early in a mystery story, you may infer that a character is hiding stolen money because the character refuses to open a drawer. Later, you may learn that the drawer contains a surprise gift. The new evidence should make you revise your first inference.

Revising is a sign of careful reasoning. Strong readers update conclusions when better evidence appears.


Avoiding Common Inference Errors

Error 1: Reading your own experience into the text. Your experience can help you understand a clue, but it cannot overrule what the passage says.

Error 2: Choosing an inference because it is possible. Many ideas are possible. The best answer is the one most strongly supported.

Error 3: Using only one dramatic word. A single word can be misleading. Check the sentence, paragraph, and larger context.

Error 4: Confusing prediction with inference. A prediction is an inference about what may happen next. Not every inference is a prediction.

Error 5: Assuming motives from stereotypes. Infer motives from the character’s actions, dialogue, circumstances, and patterns in the text.

Error 6: Ignoring contradictory evidence. If an inference cannot explain important details, revise it.

Error 7: Treating an inference as a fact. Use confidence language that reflects the strength of the evidence.


The Ladder of Inference and Careful Reading

The ladder of inference is a broader model of how people can move from observations to interpretations, assumptions, conclusions, beliefs, and actions. It is not a reading strategy designed specifically for Grades 7–8, but it offers a useful warning: people can climb from a small amount of data to a strong conclusion very quickly.

When reading, slow the climb. Separate what the text actually gives you from what you add. Ask yourself, “Which words are my evidence?” and “Which part is my interpretation?”

This is particularly useful when reading persuasive texts, social-media posts, news reports, advertisements, and historical documents, where readers may bring strong prior beliefs to the text.


Worked Examples


Literary Example

Passage: When the final bell rang, Mateo did not move. He erased the same corner of his drawing until the paper thinned. When Ms. Patel approached, he slid the page beneath his notebook and said, “It is not finished.”

Question: What can you infer about Mateo’s feelings toward his drawing?

Inference: Mateo is probably dissatisfied with or uncertain about his drawing.

Evidence: He keeps erasing one area, hides the page, and insists it is unfinished.

Reasoning: Repeated correction and hiding the work suggest that he does not feel ready to show it.

Alternative: He may simply want more time. The passage does not prove that he dislikes the whole drawing.


Informational Example

Passage: The town library extended its Saturday hours by three hours in January. During the next two months, Saturday visits rose, especially between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Weekday visits stayed almost unchanged.

Question: What can you infer about the extended hours?

Inference: The later Saturday hours likely made the library accessible to people who wanted to visit in the late afternoon.

Evidence: The increase is concentrated in the new late-afternoon period, while weekday visits are stable.

Reasoning: The timing of the change matches the timing of the increased visits.

Caution: This pattern suggests a connection but does not by itself prove that the schedule change was the only cause.


Tone Example

Passage: “What a brilliant idea,” Priya said, staring at the puddle spreading beneath the open window.

Inference: Priya is probably being sarcastic rather than sincerely praising the decision to leave the window open.

Evidence: The positive phrase conflicts with the negative result, a spreading puddle.

Reasoning: That contrast suggests irony or sarcasm.


Vocabulary Example

Passage: The committee’s first plan was tentative. Members described it as a starting point and expected to change several sections after receiving feedback.

Inference: Tentative means provisional or not final.

Evidence: The plan is described as a starting point and is expected to change.

Reasoning: Those clues indicate that the plan has not been fixed permanently.


Practice: Read, Infer, Explain

For each mini-passage, write one inference, identify at least two clues, and explain your reasoning in one or two sentences.

Practice A: The gym lights were off, but voices echoed behind the locked doors. A handwritten sign said, “Use east entrance today.”

Practice B: Ava reread the message three times before replying with only “Okay.” She placed her phone face down and pushed her lunch away.

Practice C: The river-monitoring team recorded lower water levels in every weekly measurement during six weeks without significant rain.

Practice D: The review calls the film “two hours of spectacular scenery interrupted by occasional dialogue.”

For each passage, compare your inference with a partner’s. If your conclusions differ, decide which clues support each interpretation and whether the text allows more than one reasonable answer.
