Making Inferences
Introduction
When you make an inference, you use clues and what you already know to understand an idea that is not stated directly. You do this every day. Dark clouds may help you infer that rain is coming. A character who keeps checking the clock may seem worried about being late.
Making inferences is like being a careful detective. You collect evidence, connect it with useful background knowledge, and form a reasonable conclusion.

What Is an Inference?
Writers do not explain every detail. They expect you to notice clues, connect ideas, and read between the lines. An inference is a conclusion supported by evidence and reasoning.
A helpful formula is:
Text or picture clues + what you know = an inference
An inference is not a random guess. A guess may have no support. A strong inference points to specific evidence.
Example: The hallway floor is wet. Several students are closing umbrellas. You can infer that it has been raining. The wet floor and umbrellas are evidence. Your knowledge about rainy weather helps you connect the clues.
The Iceberg Idea
An iceberg has a visible part above the water and a much larger part below it. A text can work in a similar way. Some information is stated clearly, while other ideas must be inferred.
Above the surface: facts, actions, dialogue, descriptions, and pictures you can see directly.
Below the surface: feelings, motives, causes, relationships, themes, and likely outcomes that you work out from clues.
The hidden idea must still fit the visible evidence. You should not invent details that the text does not support.
The Four-Step Inference Method
Use this method whenever a question asks what a text suggests, implies, or helps you understand.
Step One: Notice the Question
Look for words such as infer, suggest, imply, most likely, probably, or why. Decide what kind of idea you need to discover. You may need to infer a feeling, motive, cause, relationship, setting, or prediction.
Step Two: Gather Clues
Reread the relevant lines. Mark exact words, actions, dialogue, descriptions, facts, or picture details. Strong readers often use more than one clue.
Ask:
- What does the text state directly?
- Which details seem important?
- Do two or more clues point in the same direction?
Step Three: Connect Useful Knowledge
Think about what you know from life, school, other texts, or the meaning of words. Use only knowledge that truly connects to the evidence.
For example, if a character whispers, looks at the sleeping baby, and closes the door gently, your knowledge of quiet behavior helps you infer that the character does not want to wake the baby.
Do not use stereotypes or unsupported beliefs. A person's clothing, accent, age, or background does not prove what that person thinks or can do.
Step Four: State and Check the Inference
Write a complete sentence:
I infer that ... because the text says ... and I know ...
Then test your idea:
- Does every part fit the evidence?
- Is there a simpler explanation?
- Can I point to at least one exact clue?
- Would new evidence make me revise the inference?
Types of Inferences
Feelings and Traits
Writers often show feelings through actions, body language, dialogue, and thoughts instead of naming the emotion.
Example: Ava smiled, hugged the folder to her chest, and hurried home to show her family.
You can infer that Ava feels proud or excited. Her smile, careful handling of the folder, and hurry to share it support the inference.
A trait is a more lasting quality, such as patience, courage, curiosity, or responsibility. One action may suggest a feeling, but repeated actions are usually needed to infer a trait.
Facial expressions can provide clues, but expressions can be unclear or different in context. Combine visual clues with actions, words, and the situation.
Motives
A motive is a reason for an action.
Example: Theo wakes early, packs extra water, and checks the trail map twice.
You may infer that Theo wants to be well prepared for a hike. The supplies and repeated map check support this idea.
A motive should explain the action. Avoid claiming that a character has a motive when the text gives no evidence.
Cause and Effect
Sometimes the cause or effect is not stated directly.
Example: The power went out during the storm. In the morning, the ice cream in the freezer was soft.
You can infer that the freezer stopped keeping the ice cream cold because the electricity was off.
Signal words such as because, therefore, and as a result may help, but readers can also infer causes and effects when no signal word appears.
Setting and Situation
Details about weather, objects, sounds, routines, and language can reveal where or when an event happens.
Example: Passengers fasten their seat belts. The engines grow louder. A voice announces that the crew is ready for takeoff.
You can infer that the scene is inside an airplane about to leave the ground.
Word Meaning from Context
You can infer the meaning of an unfamiliar word by studying nearby clues.
Example: The puppy was ravenous. It rushed to the bowl and ate every piece of food.
The actions suggest that ravenous means very hungry.
Check whether your inferred meaning makes sense in the whole sentence.
Theme and Message
A theme is a broad message about life or people. It is usually inferred from a character's choices, problems, changes, and results.
If a character keeps practicing after several failures and finally improves, a possible theme is that steady effort can lead to progress. The theme should fit the whole text, not only one sentence.
Using Evidence in Fiction
In stories, useful clues often come from:
- Actions: What does the character do?
- Dialogue: What does the character say or avoid saying?
- Thoughts: What does the narrator reveal?
- Setting: How does the place or time affect the scene?
- Events: What changes, and what causes the change?
Worked Fiction Example
Read this short passage:
Mina stood outside the classroom with her speech cards pressed between both hands. She read the first card again. When the door opened, she took one slow breath before walking in.
Possible inference: Mina is nervous about giving a speech.
Evidence: She waits outside, holds the cards tightly, rereads them, and takes a slow breath.
Background knowledge: People often repeat notes and control their breathing when they feel nervous before speaking.
Check: The inference fits several details. It is stronger than saying Mina dislikes school, because the passage gives no evidence for that idea.
Using Evidence in Informational Text
Informational texts also require inference. You may infer:
- Why an event happened.
- How two ideas are connected.
- What problem a person is trying to solve.
- What a graph or photograph suggests.
- Which conclusion is supported by several facts.
- What the author assumes the reader already understands.
Worked Informational Example
Read this short passage:
For five weeks, the town received almost no rain. The river level fell, garden soil cracked, and residents were asked to use less water.
Possible inference: The town is experiencing a drought or very dry conditions.
Evidence: There has been little rain, the river is lower, the soil is cracked, and water use is limited.
Background knowledge: Long periods with little rain can reduce available water.
The conclusion is supported by several facts. It does not require adding details about the exact temperature or the length of future restrictions.
Making Inferences from Images
Pictures can contain evidence about place, weather, movement, mood, and events. Study the whole image before deciding.
From tracks in snow, you may infer that a person or animal moved through the area after the snow fell. You cannot be certain who made the tracks without clearer evidence. Good readers separate what is visible from what is possible.
Use these questions:
- What can I observe without guessing?
- Which details work together?
- What are two possible explanations?
- Which explanation has the strongest support?
- What extra evidence would help me decide?
Strong and Weak Inferences
A strong inference:
- Uses exact evidence.
- Fits all important details.
- Uses relevant background knowledge.
- Avoids exaggeration.
- Can be changed when new evidence appears.
A weak inference:
- Depends on only one unclear detail.
- Ignores evidence that does not fit.
- Adds information that is not present.
- Uses a stereotype.
- Treats a possibility as a proven fact.
Compare Two Answers
Passage: Jordan looked at the empty bird feeder, filled it with seed, and wrote a reminder to check it each morning.
Strong answer: Jordan wants to care for the birds because Jordan fills the feeder and plans to check it daily.
Weak answer: Jordan will become a scientist. The passage does not give enough evidence for this claim.
Revise When Evidence Changes
Inferences are not permanent. A reader may form one idea, discover a new clue, and revise the conclusion.
Beginning clue: A character hides a box under the bed.
First inference: The character may be hiding something secret.
New clue: Later, the character gives the box to a friend at a surprise party.
Revised inference: The character hid a gift to protect the surprise.
Changing your mind because of new evidence is a sign of careful thinking, not a mistake.
Reading Together
Talking with other readers can improve an inference. Two people may notice different clues. Explain your reasoning, listen to another idea, and compare the evidence.
