Welcome to Laboratory Equipment and Safety. This course is designed for learners in Grades 5–6. A laboratory, often called a lab, is a place where people investigate questions, make careful observations, take measurements, and test ideas.
In this course, you will learn how to recognize common laboratory tools, choose a useful tool for a task, measure carefully, and work safely. Your teacher's instructions and your school's safety rules always come first.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:

Meet the Laboratory
Scientists do not use one tool for every job. They choose equipment based on what they need to hold, mix, move, heat, observe, or measure. Choosing the right tool helps an investigation become safer and more accurate.

The diagram above shows many common chemistry-lab tools. You do not need to use all of them in Grades 5–6. Some tools, especially equipment involving heat or flames, may be used only by a teacher or only under close supervision.
As you watch, make a two-column note: write the name of each tool you recognize and one safe use for it.
Equipment for Holding and Mixing
A beaker is a wide container used to hold, mix, or gently pour liquids. The markings on many beakers are useful for rough estimates, but a beaker is usually not the best choice when you need a careful volume measurement.

An Erlenmeyer flask has a wide base and a narrow neck. Its shape can make swirling a liquid easier while reducing splashes. You should still handle it carefully and follow your teacher's directions.

A test tube holds a small amount of material. A test tube rack keeps test tubes upright. Never point a test tube toward yourself or another person, especially if anything is being heated.

Equipment for Measuring
Good science depends on careful measurements. Different tools measure different properties.
A graduated cylinder is designed to measure liquid volume more carefully than a beaker. Place it on a flat surface and look at the liquid level at eye height. Water and many water-like liquids form a curved surface called a meniscus. Your teacher will show you which part of the curve to read.


A thermometer measures temperature. In a school lab, use only the thermometer your teacher provides. Do not use a thermometer as a stirring rod.

A balance measures mass. Before measuring, make sure the balance is ready as your teacher has shown you. Put materials in a suitable container or weighing boat rather than directly on the balance if your teacher tells you to do so.

Equipment for Moving and Separating Materials
A pipette or dropper transfers small amounts of liquid. Never put a laboratory pipette in your mouth.

A funnel can guide a liquid into a narrow container. With filter paper, a funnel can also help separate a solid from a liquid in some investigations.

A spatula or scoopula moves small amounts of solid material. Use the correct tool instead of touching a lab material with your fingers.

A wash bottle can provide a controlled stream of water for rinsing equipment when your teacher tells you to use it. A tool may look simple, but it still needs correct handling.
Safety First
Laboratory safety is not a separate part of science; it is part of doing science well. Safe habits protect your eyes, skin, classmates, teacher, equipment, and results.
Your first safety tool is careful attention. Read instructions before starting, listen to your teacher, and ask a question if you are unsure.

Safety goggles protect your eyes from splashes and flying pieces. Wear the eye protection your teacher requires for the activity. Keep goggles on for the whole time your teacher says they are needed, including clean-up.
Important laboratory rules include:
- Follow written and spoken instructions exactly.
- Wear required safety equipment, such as goggles, and keep long hair tied back when needed.
- Wear closed-toe shoes and secure loose clothing for practical work when your teacher requires it.
- Never eat, drink, taste, or chew anything in a laboratory work area.
- Never smell a laboratory chemical unless your teacher gives you a specific safe instruction.
- Keep bags, books, and other clutter away from the working area and walkways.
- Check glassware for cracks or chips before use and report damaged equipment.
- Never pick up broken glass with your bare hands.
- Use heat sources only when your teacher allows and supervises them, and never leave heating equipment unattended.
- Report every spill, breakage, injury, or unusual event to your teacher immediately.
- Keep chemicals and equipment in the laboratory unless your teacher tells you otherwise.
- Wash your hands carefully after practical work and after removing protective equipment.
While watching the safety video, make a list of three safe actions and three unsafe actions. Explain why each action matters.
Safety Equipment Around the Room
A school laboratory may have emergency equipment such as an eyewash station, a safety shower, a fire blanket, a fire extinguisher, and clearly marked exits. You should know where safety equipment is, but you should never play with it or use it as a toy.


If something gets into your eyes or onto your skin, if something breaks, or if anyone is hurt, tell the teacher immediately. Follow the teacher's directions and the school's emergency procedures. Do not try to solve a laboratory emergency by yourself.

A good scientist does not rush. Careful work makes observations easier to trust and reduces the chance of accidents.
Choosing the Right Tool
Imagine that you are planning a simple investigation with your teacher.
If you need to collect about 50 millilitres of water carefully, a graduated cylinder is usually a better choice than a beaker. If you need to hold and mix the water with another safe material, a beaker may be more useful. If you need to add a few drops, use a pipette or dropper. If you need to know whether the water becomes warmer or cooler, use a thermometer.
Choosing equipment is a thinking skill. Ask yourself:
- What am I trying to observe or measure?
- How careful does the measurement need to be?
- What tool is designed for this job?
- What hazards could be present?
- What safety equipment and teacher supervision are needed?
Safe Measurement Challenge
With your teacher's permission, practice using clean water and classroom-safe equipment. Compare a beaker and a graduated cylinder by measuring the same target amount of water. Record what you notice about the markings, the shape of each container, and how easy it is to read the liquid level.
Do not turn this into a race. The goal is careful technique, not speed. If glassware is used, handle it with both attention and space around you.
