Introduction
Introduction to Linguistics explores how human language is structured, used, learned, processed, varied, and changed. Linguistics is not simply the study of many languages, nor is it mainly about deciding which expressions are "correct." It is the systematic study of language as a human capacity and of particular languages as complex systems. In this course, you will move from speech sounds and word structure to sentence structure, meaning, social variation, language change, and language processing.
You will learn to distinguish observation from judgment, analyze unfamiliar linguistic data, formulate hypotheses, and connect linguistic patterns with broader questions in psychology, anthropology, computer science, education, communication, and the humanities. Because this course is designed for university students, it introduces both terminology and the habits of evidence-based reasoning used by linguists.

What Linguists Study
Linguists ask questions about patterns. Phonetics and Phonology
Phonetics studies the physical side of linguistic signals. Articulatory phonetics examines how speech is produced; acoustic phonetics examines the properties of the sound wave; auditory phonetics examines how speech is perceived. Spoken sounds can be described with dimensions such as voicing, place of articulation, and manner of articulation for consonants, and tongue height, tongue backness, and lip rounding for vowels.

The vocal tract image helps you connect phonetic labels to anatomy. For example, a bilabial sound involves both lips, while an alveolar sound is produced with a constriction near the alveolar ridge. Such labels describe articulatory facts rather than spelling.
The International Phonetic Alphabet, or IPA, provides a standardized set of symbols for representing speech sounds. IPA transcription separates analysis of sound from conventional spelling, which is especially important because alphabetic writing systems often represent similar sounds differently or use the same letter for different sounds.

A vowel chart is an abstract map of articulatory and acoustic relationships. Its horizontal dimension broadly corresponds to frontness and backness, while its vertical dimension broadly corresponds to vowel height. Actual vowel systems differ across languages, so the chart should not be interpreted as a list of vowels every language must have.
Phonology studies how a language organizes sounds into a system. A phoneme is a contrastive sound category in a particular language. A minimal pair consists of two forms that differ in one relevant sound and have different meanings; such pairs can provide evidence that two sounds belong to different phonemes. An allophone is a contextually conditioned or otherwise non-contrastive realization of a phoneme.

Phonological analysis asks where sounds occur, whether their distributions overlap, and whether replacing one with another can change meaning. It also studies syllable structure, stress, tone, harmony, assimilation, deletion, and other patterned processes.
Acoustic Evidence
Speech can be represented as a waveform or a spectrogram. A spectrogram displays frequency information over time and makes visible acoustic patterns such as formants, voicing, and changes between segments. Linguists use tools such as Praat to measure duration, pitch, formant frequencies, and other properties.

A spectrogram is not a direct picture of a phoneme. It is a visualization of an acoustic signal. Interpretation requires an analysis that connects measurable properties of the signal with articulatory events and perceptual categories.
Morphology: The Structure of Words
Morphology investigates how words are built from smaller meaningful or grammatical units called morphemes. A morpheme can be a root, a prefix, a suffix, or another structural element. Some morphemes can stand alone as words, while others must attach to a host.
A key distinction is between inflection and derivation. Inflection typically expresses grammatical information such as number, tense, person, or case without creating a new lexeme. Derivation typically creates a new lexeme or changes a word's meaning or category. Languages differ greatly in how much grammatical information they package inside words.

A morphological tree represents hierarchical structure rather than a mere sequence of letters. The order in which affixes combine can matter for meaning and category. Morphological analysis therefore involves identifying recurring forms, comparing paradigms, and testing hypotheses against data.
Syntax: The Structure of Sentences
Syntax studies how words and phrases combine into larger units. A sentence is not simply a string of words: it has hierarchical organization. Groups of words can form constituents, such as noun phrases, verb phrases, adjective phrases, and prepositional phrases.
Constituency can be investigated with diagnostics such as substitution, movement, coordination, and question formation. No single diagnostic is mechanically decisive in every case, so syntactic reasoning usually compares several pieces of evidence.

The syntax tree above illustrates hierarchical analysis of the sentence "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously." The sentence is famous because it shows that a sequence can be structurally well formed even when its ordinary interpretation is unusual. This distinction helps linguists separate grammatical structure from plausibility and world knowledge.
Languages vary in word order and in the grammatical devices they use to mark relationships. Some rely heavily on order, while others use richer case marking or agreement. Cross-linguistic comparison prevents analysts from assuming that the structure of one familiar language is universal.
Semantics and Pragmatics
Semantics studies conventional linguistic meaning. Lexical semantics examines relations among word meanings, including synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, polysemy, and ambiguity. Compositional semantics asks how the meanings of parts combine with syntactic structure to produce larger interpretations.
Logical relations are also important. If one sentence must be true whenever another sentence is true, the first may be entailed by the second. If two interpretations cannot both be true in the relevant circumstances, they may be contradictory. Formal semantics often represents such relationships with tools from logic.
Pragmatics studies how context contributes to interpretation. Speakers regularly communicate meanings that are not fully encoded in the words themselves. Hearers draw inferences from shared knowledge, conversational expectations, goals, social relationships, and the physical situation.
Important pragmatic concepts include deixis, which links expressions to context; presupposition, which concerns backgrounded assumptions; speech acts, which describe actions performed through language; and implicature, which concerns meanings inferred rather than literally stated.
When analyzing meaning, avoid treating semantics and pragmatics as competing explanations. Many interpretations arise from their interaction: conventional meanings constrain what an expression can contribute, while context guides how that contribution is used and understood.
Sociolinguistics: Language in Society
Sociolinguistics investigates systematic variation in language and its relationship to social life. Variation may correlate with region, age, profession, community, interactional setting, social network, or identity practices. A dialect is a systematic variety of a language; all speakers use one or more varieties, and no dialect is linguistically "accent-free."
An accent refers primarily to pronunciation, whereas a dialect can include differences in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and discourse conventions. A register is associated with particular situations, activities, roles, or communicative purposes. Speakers often shift styles or registers as contexts change.
Language attitudes are socially powerful. Features associated with prestigious institutions may be treated as more correct, even when stigmatized varieties are equally systematic. Sociolinguistic analysis therefore distinguishes structural properties from social evaluations.
Signed Languages and Linguistic Diversity
Human language is not limited to speech. Natural sign languages have phonological organization, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, variation, and historical change. They are not manually coded versions of surrounding spoken languages. For example, American Sign Language is a natural language with its own linguistic history and structure.

Language acquisition also connects linguistics with cognitive science. Children develop rich linguistic knowledge without explicit instruction in every pattern. Ethics is part of methodology. When working with linguistic examples, distinguish data from analysis. A transcription, sentence judgment, corpus count, or interview excerpt is evidence. A claim about phonemes, constituents, social meaning, or historical relationship is an interpretation that must be argued for.
A University-Level Analysis Workflow
You can approach an unfamiliar dataset by first identifying recurring forms and contrasts, then proposing a generalization, testing it against every relevant example, searching for counterexamples, and revising the hypothesis. Good linguistic analysis explains multiple facts with a clear rule or representation while remaining open to alternative accounts.
Keep a record of uncertainty. Not every dataset has a single obvious analysis, and some evidence may be insufficient. University-level reasoning includes stating what the data establish, what they merely suggest, and what additional evidence would discriminate between competing explanations.
Applications of Linguistics
Linguistic knowledge has practical applications in many fields. Computational linguistics and natural language processing model language with algorithms and data. Language education uses insights about sound systems, grammar, discourse, and acquisition. Clinical linguistics contributes to assessment and intervention for communication disorders. Forensic linguistics applies linguistic analysis to legal and investigative contexts. Lexicography studies and produces dictionaries. Language documentation supports communities and scholarship by creating durable records of linguistic practices.
Applications also raise ethical questions. Automated language systems can reproduce biases in their training data; standardized language policies can privilege some varieties over others; speech technologies may work unevenly across accents; and documentation projects can mishandle ownership or access. Linguistic expertise is therefore most valuable when technical analysis is paired with social and ethical reflection.
Integrating the Levels of Analysis
Real linguistic problems rarely remain inside one subfield. Consider a new slang expression spreading online. Morphology can analyze its internal structure, syntax can examine where it appears in sentences, semantics can describe its conventional meaning, pragmatics can explain implied meanings, sociolinguistics can investigate who uses it and what identities it indexes, corpus linguistics can track its frequency, and historical analysis can trace earlier forms.
Likewise, a pronunciation change can be studied acoustically, analyzed phonologically, mapped geographically, correlated with social variables, and investigated perceptually. The strength of linguistics lies partly in combining levels of explanation without reducing one level to another.
