Farm Safety



Introduction

Farm safety means planning and carrying out agricultural work so that people, animals, equipment, and the environment are protected from avoidable harm. For apprentices, trainees, and vocational students, safety is not a separate activity added after the job; it is part of every job from preparation to shutdown. You need to recognize hazards, judge risk, choose controls, follow instructions, communicate clearly, and stop work when conditions are unsafe.

Agriculture combines moving machinery, vehicles, animals, electricity, chemicals, dust, noise, heat, heights, confined spaces, uneven ground, and changing weather. These hazards can interact. For example, fatigue can reduce concentration while you operate a tractor, wet ground can reduce traction, and poor visibility can increase the chance of a collision. Safe work therefore depends on both technical controls and good decisions.

Hazard Recognition and Risk Control


Hazard, Risk, and Control

A hazard is something with the potential to cause injury, illness, damage, or loss. Risk combines the likelihood that harm will occur with the possible severity of the outcome. A control is a measure used to eliminate the hazard or reduce the risk.

Before beginning a task, inspect the work area and ask what can move, fall, roll, crush, cut, entangle, burn, poison, suffocate, infect, shock, or distract you. Then consider who could be harmed, including co-workers, visitors, children, contractors, and bystanders.

The hierarchy of controls helps you choose stronger controls before relying on weaker ones. Eliminate the hazard when possible. If elimination is not possible, consider substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and finally PPE. PPE is important, but it should not be the only control when a safer design or work method is available.


Pre-Task Safety Check

A good pre-task check includes the job, the person, the equipment, and the environment. Confirm that you are trained and authorized for the task. Inspect machinery and guards, identify stored energy, check access routes, consider weather and lighting, and agree on communication signals. If the task changes, reassess the risk.

Near misses should be reported and discussed. A near miss is an event that did not cause injury or damage but had the potential to do so. Learning from near misses can prevent a future incident.


Tractors and Mobile Farm Equipment


Rollover and Runover Prevention

Tractor rollovers can be fatal. A properly designed rollover protective structure, together with a correctly worn seat belt, helps keep the operator within the protected zone during an overturn. Drive at a speed suitable for the ground, load, visibility, and slope. Avoid sudden turns, unsafe edges, ditches, holes, and slopes beyond the tractor or employer's safe operating limits.

Never allow an unauthorized passenger on a tractor unless the machine has a manufacturer-approved passenger seat. Before moving, check mirrors and blind spots, make sure people are clear, and use a spotter where visibility is poor. When parking, lower attachments, select the correct gear or park position, apply the parking brake, stop the engine, and remove the key according to the manufacturer's instructions and workplace procedure.


Power Take-Off and Entanglement Hazards

A power take-off transfers engine power from a tractor to an implement. Rotating PTO shafts and driveline components can catch loose clothing, long hair, jewelry, cords, or body parts. Keep master shields and driveline guards in place and in good condition. Do not step over a rotating PTO shaft.

Before clearing a blockage, making an adjustment, or carrying out maintenance, stop the machine and isolate all energy sources according to the approved procedure. Wait for moving parts to stop and control stored hydraulic, mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, or gravitational energy before work begins.


Machinery Guards and Safe Maintenance

Guards reduce access to dangerous moving parts such as belts, chains, gears, shafts, blades, and pinch points. A missing guard is a safety defect, not an invitation to work more carefully. Report the defect and keep the machine out of service until it is made safe.

Use the correct tools and secure raised equipment before working beneath it. Hydraulic systems can contain dangerous stored pressure, and a small high-pressure fluid leak can penetrate skin. Never use your hand to search for a hydraulic leak. Follow the equipment manual and workplace isolation procedure.


Grain, Silos, and Confined Spaces


Engulfment, Dust, and Hazardous Atmospheres

Flowing grain can behave like a fluid and can trap or engulf a person. Bridged grain or a vertical grain wall can collapse without warning. Grain bins, silos, manure pits, tanks, and similar spaces may also contain low oxygen, toxic gases, combustible dust, moving equipment, or other serious hazards.

Do not enter a grain bin or other confined space unless the task is authorized and the required entry procedure, isolation, atmospheric testing, rescue arrangements, and protective equipment are in place. Never enter a bin while unloading equipment is operating. Lockout and isolation must prevent unexpected start-up.


Chemical and Pesticide Safety


Labels, Safety Data, and Exposure Routes

Farm chemicals may enter the body by inhalation, skin contact, eye contact, swallowing, or accidental injection. Before using a chemical, read the current label and workplace safety information. Know the required PPE, mixing instructions, restricted areas, first-aid measures, spill procedure, storage requirements, and what to do if exposure occurs.

Do not transfer hazardous chemicals into food or drink containers. Keep containers labeled and closed, separate incompatible substances, and prevent contamination of vehicles, homes, clothing, food, and water. Wash hands before eating or drinking and follow decontamination procedures after handling chemicals.


Choosing and Using PPE

PPE may include gloves, protective clothing, safety footwear, eye or face protection, hearing protection, helmets, and respirators. PPE must match the specific hazard. A respirator should only be used when it is suitable for the contaminant and task and when the required training, fit, inspection, and maintenance arrangements are in place.

Inspect PPE before use. Replace damaged or contaminated items according to the manufacturer's guidance and workplace procedure. Never assume that ordinary clothing provides chemical, impact, hearing, or respiratory protection.


Livestock and Biological Hazards


Safe Animal Handling

Animals can kick, crush, bite, butt, trample, or suddenly change direction. Good handling uses suitable facilities, calm movement, escape routes, and an understanding of animal behavior. Avoid trapping yourself between an animal and a solid object. Keep gates, races, crushes, and latches in good condition.

Use extra caution with animals that are stressed, isolated, protecting young, unfamiliar with handling, or known to be aggressive. Plan the task before entering a pen and make sure another trained person knows what you are doing when the risk is high.


Zoonoses and Hygiene

A zoonosis is an infection that can pass between animals and humans. Exposure may occur through bites, scratches, body fluids, manure, contaminated surfaces, aerosols, or animal products. Good hygiene, suitable PPE, vaccination where recommended, safe sharps practice, and prompt reporting of bites or exposures help reduce risk.

Cover cuts before animal work, wash hands after contact, and keep eating areas separate from animal and chemical work areas. Follow veterinary, public-health, and workplace instructions for suspected infectious disease.


Noise, Dust, Heat, and Ergonomics


Hearing and Respiratory Protection

Tractors, grain dryers, chainsaws, workshops, and livestock buildings can expose you to harmful noise. Reduce noise at the source where possible, maintain equipment, limit exposure time, and use suitable hearing protection when required.

Organic dust from grain, hay, bedding, feed, and animal environments can irritate or damage the respiratory system. Control dust through ventilation, enclosure, extraction, wet methods where appropriate, good housekeeping, and suitable respiratory protection when required.


Heat, Fatigue, and Manual Handling

Heat illness can develop during hot, humid, physically demanding work, especially when protective clothing is worn. Use the employer's heat plan, drink suitable fluids, take planned rest breaks, use shade or cooling when available, and learn the signs that require immediate action. New or returning workers may need time to acclimatize.

Fatigue reduces attention, judgment, and reaction time. Schedule demanding tasks sensibly, take breaks, and report when fatigue could make the work unsafe. For lifting and carrying, reduce the load where possible, use mechanical assistance, improve the grip and route, and ask for help rather than attempting an unsafe lift.


Electrical, Fire, and Weather Safety


Electricity and Overhead Lines

Overhead power lines are a major risk to tall machinery, augers, irrigation equipment, loaders, and raised attachments. Know the location and safe clearance required by local rules and the electricity provider. Use a spotter when needed and plan travel routes before raising or moving equipment.

Treat fallen or damaged electrical conductors as live. Keep people away and contact the electricity provider or emergency services. Do not attempt a rescue that would expose you to electric current.


Fire Prevention and Severe Weather

Keep ignition sources away from fuels, dry crop material, dust, and other combustibles. Maintain electrical systems and machinery, clean combustible buildup, store fuels correctly, and keep suitable fire extinguishers accessible. Know which extinguisher types are appropriate for the hazards present and only fight a fire if you are trained, have a safe escape route, and the situation is still controllable.

Weather can change rapidly. Lightning, storms, extreme heat, ice, flooding, poor visibility, and high winds can make normal tasks unsafe. Check forecasts, define stop-work conditions, and know where to shelter.


Emergency Preparedness and First Aid


Planning Before an Emergency

An emergency plan should include the exact farm address or location information, access routes for responders, emergency contact numbers, known hazards, first-aid arrangements, fire equipment, chemical information, animal hazards, and isolation points for electricity or machinery.

If an incident occurs, protect yourself from danger before approaching the casualty. Stop machinery and isolate hazards if it is safe to do so, call emergency services promptly, give clear location information, and provide first aid only within your level of training. Do not enter a grain bin, manure pit, tank, or other hazardous space to attempt an unplanned rescue; this can create additional victims.


Safety Communication and Professional Practice


Stop-Work Responsibility

A competent worker does not hide uncertainty. Ask when an instruction is unclear, report defects, challenge unsafe shortcuts respectfully, and stop work when a serious uncontrolled hazard is present. Good safety communication is specific: identify the hazard, explain who may be exposed, state what control is missing, and agree on the next safe action.

Toolbox talks, shift handovers, pre-start meetings, hand signals, radios, and written procedures all support safe teamwork. Communication is especially important when several people are moving livestock, hitching implements, reversing vehicles, or isolating machinery.
