Evaluating Digital Information



Introduction

Every day, you meet digital information in search results, videos, group chats, websites, games, social media, school platforms, and AI tools. Some information is accurate and useful. Some is mistaken, incomplete, out of date, taken out of context, designed mainly to persuade, or deliberately misleading. Your job is not to distrust everything. Your job is to learn how to check before you trust, use, or share.

This aiMOOC is designed for Grades 7-8. You will practice media literacy, information literacy, critical thinking, and responsible digital citizenship. By the end, you should be able to identify claims, investigate sources, compare independent coverage, trace evidence to its original context, and explain why you judge a piece of information to be reliable, uncertain, or unreliable.

Why Digital Information Needs Evaluation

Online information can travel very quickly. A post can be copied, shortened, edited, translated, turned into a meme, or shared with a new caption. Each change can remove important context. A popular post is not automatically a true post, and a professional-looking website is not automatically a reliable website.

It helps to know two important terms. Misinformation is inaccurate or false information that can be shared without an intention to deceive. Disinformation is false or misleading information created or shared deliberately to deceive people. In both cases, the safest response is to investigate the claim rather than guessing the creator's intention.

A useful habit is to separate your first reaction from your final judgment. Surprise, anger, excitement, fear, or agreement can make a claim feel convincing before you have checked it. Strong feelings are a signal to slow down and investigate.


What You Are Evaluating


Claim, Source, Evidence, and Context

A claim is a statement that can be checked. For example, "The school library will close at 2 p.m. tomorrow" is a claim. A source is where the information comes from, such as a school website, a newspaper, a research organization, a video creator, or an anonymous account. Evidence is the information used to support a claim, such as an official notice, a document, data, a photograph, or a quotation. Context is the surrounding information that helps you understand what the evidence actually means.

A source can contain several claims, and each claim may need different evidence. Do not ask only, "Is this website good?" Also ask, "What exactly is this claim, and what evidence supports it?"

A primary source comes directly from an event, organization, dataset, document, or person involved. A secondary source explains or reports on primary material. Primary sources can be valuable, but they are not automatically correct or complete. You still need to consider authenticity, perspective, limitations, and context.


Purpose and Audience

Ask why the content was created and who it is trying to reach. A page may aim to inform, sell, entertain, persuade, recruit, raise money, or attract attention. A source can have more than one purpose.

Purpose does not automatically make information false. An advertisement can contain true facts, and a nonprofit organization can publish accurate research. However, knowing the purpose helps you decide what needs closer checking. Look for funding, sponsorship, ownership, advertising, affiliate links, and calls to action when they matter to the claim.


Authority and Expertise

Authority depends on the topic. A professional astronomer may be a strong source for astronomy but not for every medical or historical question. Check whether the author or organization has relevant expertise, a record of accurate work, transparent methods, and a way to correct mistakes.

Do not judge expertise by appearance alone. A confident voice, a large follower count, a verified-looking badge, expensive graphics, or a polished website can be persuasive without proving accuracy.


A Fast Evaluation Routine: SIFT

One practical method for checking online information is SIFT. The letters remind you of four moves: Stop, Investigate the source, Find better coverage, and Trace claims, quotes, and media to the original context. The method is useful because it encourages you to leave the page you are evaluating and see what reliable outside sources say.


Stop

Before you like, repost, cite, or act on a claim, pause. Ask what you already know about the source and whether the claim matters enough to verify. If a post creates a strong emotional reaction or an urgent demand to share immediately, that is a good reason to slow down.

Stopping does not mean doing nothing. It means giving yourself enough time to choose a better next step.


Investigate the Source

Find out who is behind the information. Search the organization, author, or account in a new tab. Look for reliable descriptions from sources that are independent of the source you are checking.

Useful questions include: Who created this? What is the creator's purpose? What relevant expertise do they have? How do other reliable sources describe them? Is there evidence of corrections, transparency, or accountability?


Find Better Coverage

You do not always need to prove that the first source is bad. Often the faster move is to find stronger coverage of the same claim. Search for the main idea using neutral keywords. Compare several independent sources, especially sources that have relevant expertise or direct access to the evidence.

If many sites repeat the same wording, they may all be copying one original report. That is not the same as independent confirmation. Look for sources that checked the claim separately or point to separate evidence.


Trace to the Original Context

Quotes, statistics, images, and clips can change meaning when they are removed from their original setting. Follow links backward until you reach the earliest reliable source you can find. Read enough of that source to understand what came before and after the quoted material.

Check whether a statistic refers to the same group, place, and time period described in the post. Check whether an image was first published with a different caption. Check whether a short video clip leaves out an important part of the event.


Lateral Reading in Practice

Lateral reading means opening new tabs and checking what other sources say about a website, organization, author, or claim. It is different from spending all your time reading down one page. Professional fact-checkers and skilled online researchers use this move because a website can say impressive things about itself that are difficult to judge from the page alone.

A simple lateral-reading routine is to leave the original page, search the name of the source, read reliable descriptions from independent sources, and then return to the original claim with more context. You can repeat the process for the author, evidence, or organization.

When you compare sources, do not count websites as if every site were an independent vote. Ask where each source got its information. Two articles that both depend on the same press release are one chain of evidence, not two separate confirmations.


Judging Evidence


Evidence Strength

Good evidence matches the claim. A claim about today's school schedule is best checked with an official and current school source. A claim about a scientific finding is stronger when you can find the original research or a careful explanation from a relevant scientific institution. A claim about what a person said is stronger when you can find the full speech, interview, document, or recording.

Look for evidence that is specific, relevant, and traceable. Be cautious when a post uses phrases such as "experts say" or "studies prove" without naming the experts or studies.


Dates, Numbers, and Context

A true fact can become misleading when it is placed in the wrong time or context. Always check publication dates, update dates, and the date of the event being discussed. An old photograph can be real but wrongly presented as a new event.

Numbers need context too. Ask what was measured, how many people or items were included, what time period was used, and whether the comparison is fair. A percentage can sound dramatic while hiding a very small starting number.


Corroboration and Independence

Corroboration means finding additional evidence that supports the same conclusion. The strongest corroboration comes from sources that are genuinely independent of one another and that explain how they know what they report.

Agreement alone is not proof. Many accounts can repeat the same rumor. Follow the evidence trail and ask whether each source adds new, verifiable information.


Bias and Emotional Triggers

Bias is a tendency or perspective that can influence what people notice, select, interpret, or emphasize. Bias does not automatically mean a source is lying. The useful question is how a perspective may shape the information and whether the evidence still supports the claim.

Confirmation bias is the tendency to notice or favor information that fits what we already believe. A good evaluator searches for strong evidence even when it challenges an expected answer.


Images, Video, and AI-Generated Content

Pictures and videos can be powerful evidence, but they also need checking. A real image can be paired with a false caption. A clip can be cropped, slowed down, sped up, edited, or removed from its original sequence. An image can also be digitally altered or generated by AI.

A useful first move is to trace the media to its earliest reliable appearance. Reverse image search can help you find older versions of a picture, other captions, or pages that used the same image. Search distinctive words from a video caption, look for the full recording, and compare details such as location, weather, signs, and dates with reliable sources.

Do not rely only on visual "glitches" to decide whether media is AI-generated. Generation tools improve, and ordinary photos can also contain strange-looking details. Provenance is more useful: ask where the media came from, whether the original creator is known, whether trustworthy sources confirm the event, and whether the content can be traced to an authentic source.

AI chatbots and other generative tools can produce fluent answers that contain errors or unsupported claims. For important schoolwork or real-world decisions, verify key claims with reliable sources and open the original sources yourself rather than trusting a citation simply because it looks complete.


Search Results, Fact-Checks, and Social Media

Search engines help you find information, but ranking is not the same as truth. Results may be influenced by relevance, popularity, location, language, freshness, personalization, or advertising. A result labeled as sponsored is paid placement, not proof of quality.

Search with neutral terms and try more than one query. When possible, search directly for the organization, document, dataset, or original event you need. Use quotation marks only when you need to search for an exact phrase; exact-phrase searching can help you trace copied wording back to an earlier source.

Fact-checking organizations can be useful starting points when a claim has already spread widely. Read how the fact-checker reached its conclusion and follow links to original evidence. Do not treat a rating label as the whole argument.

On social media, likes, shares, comments, views, and follower counts show attention, not accuracy. Recommendation systems can repeatedly show you content similar to what you watched or interacted with before. Make a habit of searching outside your feed when a claim matters.


A Classroom Verification Example

Imagine that a screenshot in a group chat says, "School starts at 10:00 tomorrow because of extreme heat." The screenshot has the school logo, but there is no link.

Stop: Do not forward the screenshot yet. Notice that the claim affects your next day and is worth checking.

Investigate the source: Ask who first posted the screenshot. A logo alone does not prove that the message is official.

Find better coverage: Check the official school website, the school communication system, and any verified district or local authority channel normally used for schedule changes.

Trace the message: If the screenshot names a notice, announcement, or email, look for the original version. Compare the wording, date, and time.

Conclude carefully: If official sources confirm the change, you can share the official link. If you cannot confirm it, say that the claim is unverified rather than presenting it as a fact.

This routine works beyond school announcements. You can use the same habits for viral videos, science claims, product claims, historical quotations, sports rumors, celebrity posts, and AI-generated answers.


Responsible Sharing

Evaluating information is also about what you do next. Share the strongest available source instead of a screenshot when possible. Keep important context with quotations, images, and numbers. If the evidence is uncertain, use words such as "unconfirmed" or "I could not verify this" instead of guessing.

If you discover that you shared something inaccurate, correct it clearly. Avoid exposing private information while fact-checking. Do not contact or harass private individuals just to investigate a post. For sensitive personal, medical, legal, or safety claims, involve a trusted adult or qualified professional and rely on authoritative sources.

A responsible digital citizen values accuracy over speed and treats other people fairly while checking information.
