Understanding Endurance

Endurance means being able to continue an activity for a period of time without needing to stop immediately because of tiredness. Your lungs bring oxygen into your body, your heart pumps blood, your blood carries oxygen, and your blood vessels provide pathways for the blood.

Activities that use large muscle groups again and again are often called aerobic activities. Examples include brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, dancing, and many active games. Regular aerobic activity can improve heart and lung health and help build endurance.


Why Oxygen Matters

Your muscles need energy to move. During many endurance activities, oxygen helps your cells release energy from nutrients. When your muscles work harder, they need more oxygen. Your body responds by breathing faster and making your heart beat faster so that oxygen can reach the working muscles more quickly.


Your Cardiovascular Team

The cardiovascular system includes your heart and blood vessels. In everyday school science, you will often study it together with blood as part of the circulatory system. The system connects every part of your body through a network of vessels.


The Heart: A Muscular Pump

Your heart is a strong muscle in your chest. It has four chambers. The right side sends blood toward the lungs, where the blood can pick up oxygen. The left side sends oxygen-rich blood out to the body. Valves inside the heart help keep blood moving in the correct direction.

You do not have to control each beat. The heart works automatically, but its rate changes when your body needs more or less oxygen. During active play or exercise, your heart usually beats faster than it does when you are resting.

You can use a simple talk test to think about activity intensity. During moderate activity, you can usually talk but not sing easily. During vigorous activity, you are breathing harder and may be able to say only a few words before pausing for a breath.

Examples of moderate or vigorous activity depend on the person. Brisk walking might feel moderate to one person, while running or a fast game might feel vigorous. Choose activities that are safe, enjoyable, and suitable for you.


Building Endurance Safely

Endurance improves through regular practice over time. Begin with activities you can do comfortably and build up gradually. A warm-up prepares your body for more active movement, while a cool-down helps you return toward resting effort.

Safe endurance activities can include brisk walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, jogging, playground games, active family walks, and many team or individual sports. You can also break activity into smaller periods across the day.

If an activity causes pain, dizziness, faintness, or unusual difficulty breathing, stop and tell a trusted adult. If you have a medical condition, injury, or special health need, follow the activity guidance given by your family, school, and healthcare professional.


Daily Activity for School-Age Children

Health organizations recommend that children and adolescents get at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. Most of this time should be aerobic activity. During the week, some activity should also be vigorous and some should strengthen muscles and bones.

The goal does not require one long workout. Recess, active travel, physical education, sports, dancing, outdoor play, chores, and family activities can all contribute. Variety helps you practice different skills and keeps movement interesting.


Habits That Support Cardiovascular Health

Physical activity is important, but it works best as part of a healthy routine. Food, water, sleep, recovery, and avoiding harmful substances all matter.


Food for an Active Body

A balanced eating pattern gives your body nutrients and energy for growth and activity. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein foods, and other nutrient-rich choices can all be part of healthy meals and snacks. No single food creates endurance by itself. A varied pattern over time matters more than one special meal.


Water and Hydration

Your body loses water through breathing and sweating. Drinking water regularly helps your body function during the school day and activity. During long or hot activities, take sensible drink breaks and follow guidance from adults responsible for the activity.


Sleep and Recovery

Sleep gives your body time to recover, grow, and prepare for the next day. A regular sleep routine supports learning, mood, and physical activity. Rest days or easier activity days can also be useful after especially demanding exercise.


Protecting the Heart and Lungs

Tobacco smoke and nicotine products can harm the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. A healthy choice is to avoid smoking and vaping and to ask a trusted adult for help if you have questions about these products.


Mini Investigation: Pulse Before and After Movement

This activity helps you observe how your own pulse changes. It is not a medical test and should not be used to compare fitness between classmates.

  1. Resting pulse observation: Sit quietly for a short time, then place your index and middle fingers gently on the thumb side of your opposite wrist until you feel your pulse.
  2. Counting a pulse: Count the beats for 30 seconds and double the number to estimate beats per minute.
  3. Safe movement: With teacher permission, march in place, walk briskly, or do another safe activity for about one minute.
  4. Post-activity pulse: Stop, find your pulse again, and repeat the same counting method.
  5. Reflection: Describe what changed and explain why active muscles may cause the heart to beat faster.

Do not press hard on your wrist, and do not use your thumb to feel the pulse because your thumb has a pulse of its own. Stop the activity and tell an adult if you feel unwell.

A good investigation keeps important conditions as similar as possible. If you measure your pulse more than once, use the same body position, the same counting time, and the same type of activity. Record your results clearly. Your goal is to notice a pattern in your own measurements, not to decide who is "best."
