Introduction

Light can make a simple circle look like a round ball. A shadow can make an object feel heavy, far away, mysterious, sunny, or dramatic. In this aiMOOC, you will learn how artists observe light, shadows, and value and then use pencil marks to make flat shapes look three-dimensional.

This course is designed for Grades 5–6. You will combine art, observation, simple science, speaking, and writing. You do not need expensive materials. A pencil, paper, an eraser, and a safe light source such as a desk lamp or flashlight are enough for most activities.

Look at the image above. Before you think about details, notice the biggest light and dark shapes. Artists often begin this way: first see the pattern of values, then add smaller details.

Safety: Never look directly at the Sun. Never shine a flashlight into anyone's eyes. Ask an adult or teacher before darkening a room for an experiment.


What You Will Learn

By the end of the course, you should be able to explain why shadows appear, identify a light source, compare light and dark values, distinguish a form shadow from a cast shadow, use several shading techniques, and create a drawing in which light helps show form, space, and mood.

You will also practice useful English art words. When you discuss your drawings, try sentence starters such as “The light comes from…”, “The darkest value is…”, “I used contrast to…”, and “The cast shadow changes because…”.


Light, Objects, and Shadows


Where Does a Shadow Come From?

A light source sends light outward. When an opaque object blocks some of that light, a darker area appears behind or beside the object. That darker area is a shadow. The direction of the shadow depends on the position of the light source.

Try this with a cup and a flashlight. Put the cup on a table, keep the flashlight safely pointed away from faces, and move the light from left to right. The cast shadow moves in the opposite direction. Raise the light and the shadow often becomes shorter. Lower the light and the shadow often becomes longer.

This diagram shows that a shadow can have a darker central area and a softer edge. In everyday drawing, you do not need to name every optical region, but you should look carefully: is the shadow edge sharp, soft, or different in different places?

After watching, explain one way that changing the light source changes a shadow. Use a complete sentence and one of these words: direction, size, edge, or distance.


Form Shadow and Cast Shadow

A form shadow is the darker area on the object itself where less light reaches the surface. A cast shadow is the dark shape that the object projects onto another surface, such as a table, wall, or floor.

Imagine a ball on a desk. The side facing the lamp is lighter. The side turning away from the lamp becomes darker. That dark side is part of the ball's form shadow. The oval dark shape on the desk is the cast shadow.

A useful question is: “Is this dark area on the object, or is it on another surface?” That question often helps you decide which kind of shadow you are seeing.


Natural Light Is Full of Patterns

Sunlight passing through leaves can make broken patches of light and shadow called dappled light. These patterns can change quickly when leaves move or when the Sun changes position in the sky.

For a two-minute observation, look at a safe outdoor shadow or a shadow near a window. Do not draw yet. Notice its shape, edge, darkest area, and relationship to the light source. Then close your eyes for five seconds and describe the shadow from memory.


Value: The Language of Light and Dark


What Is Value?

In art, value means how light or dark an area looks. A drawing can use many values even when it has no color. Value helps you show roundness, distance, texture, and mood.

Make a simple value strip with five boxes. Leave the first box almost white. Make each next box darker until the fifth box is as dark as your pencil can comfortably make it. The goal is not perfect smoothness. The goal is to make each step clearly different.

A highlight is one of the lightest areas where light strongly reaches a surface. A midtone is a middle value. A core shadow is a darker part of the form shadow. Some objects also show reflected light, where light bounces from nearby surfaces into the shaded side. Reflected light is often still darker than the main light side.


Contrast Makes Things Stand Out

Contrast is the difference between light and dark areas. Strong contrast can make an object look bold or dramatic. Gentle contrast can make a scene feel soft or quiet.

Look at the next image and find one place where light and dark meet clearly.

Now make a thumbnail sketch about the size of a sticky note. Use only three values: light, middle, and dark. Ignore tiny details. Ask yourself whether the drawing is still readable when simplified.


Shading Techniques


Four Useful Ways to Shade

Hatching uses separate lines that usually travel in a similar direction. Cross-hatching places sets of lines across one another. Stippling builds value with dots. Blending makes smoother changes by gently joining pencil tones.

Each method creates a different texture. Hatching can feel energetic. Cross-hatching can build deep darks. Stippling can look grainy or sparkling. Blending can create soft transitions. There is no single best method; choose the one that helps the form and mood of your drawing.

Create four small squares. Use one technique in each square. Keep the same light-to-dark goal so that you can compare how the marks change the texture.


Follow the Form

Shading marks can help describe the surface of an object. On a cylinder, curved or wrapping marks can make the surface feel round. On a cube, straighter marks can support the flat planes. On a sphere, gradual value changes can suggest a smooth turn away from the light.

While you watch, pause at a clear stage and point to the light side, the darker form shadow, and the cast shadow. Then continue and compare your prediction with the finished drawing.


A Simple Sphere Study

Draw a circle lightly. Choose one side for the light source and draw a tiny arrow outside the circle to remind yourself where the light comes from. Keep part of the light side pale. Add a midtone as the form turns away from the light. Darken the shadow side gradually. Then add a cast shadow on the surface beneath the sphere.

Do not press very hard at the beginning. Building dark values in layers gives you more control. If the whole sphere is equally dark, the form may look flat. If you save a light area and make the shadow side darker, the circle begins to look round.


Looking at Artists


Chiaroscuro: Drama with Light and Dark

Chiaroscuro is an art term for the strong use of light and dark to model forms and create a dramatic effect. You do not need to copy an old painting to use this idea. You can create your own high-contrast still life with a lamp, a cup, and a piece of fruit.

Look first for large value groups. Which fruit is easiest to see? Where does the light appear strongest? Which dark shapes connect with one another? Answer with evidence from what you can see rather than guessing what the artist intended.

After watching, write two sentences: one that defines chiaroscuro in your own words and one that explains how strong value contrast can guide a viewer's attention.


Light Can Organize a Landscape

Artists can use light and shadow to lead your eye through a large scene. Bright areas may pull attention first, while darker areas can frame a path, building, mountain, or figure.

In this painting, search for a path your eyes follow from one value area to another. Trace that path in the air with your finger. Then describe it using location words such as foreground, middle ground, background, left, and right.

Compare the two landscapes. Do they use contrast in the same way? Choose one similarity and one difference. There is more than one good answer if you support your ideas with visible evidence.


Portrait Light and Mood

Light can change the mood of a face or figure. Light from the front may reduce strong shadows. Light from the side can create a clear light-dark split. Light from below can feel unusual because we see it less often in everyday daylight.

Do not copy a person's face unless you have permission to use the image. For practice, you can use a toy, a paper mask, or your own hand and study how side lighting changes the shapes you see.


Plan a Light-and-Shadow Drawing


Step 1: Choose a Simple Subject

Good practice objects include a mug, toy block, ball, folded paper shape, fruit, shoe, or small plant pot. Choose one to three objects so that you can concentrate on light and value rather than too many details.


Step 2: Choose One Main Light Source

A single clear light source makes the pattern easier to understand. Place a desk lamp or flashlight to one side. Move it until you see an interesting cast shadow. Remember the safety rules: keep the light out of eyes and keep electrical equipment dry and stable.


Step 3: Find the Big Value Shapes

Squint gently or half-close your eyes for a moment. Details become less noticeable, so the biggest light and dark shapes are easier to compare. Sketch these shapes lightly. Ask: where is the lightest light? Where is the darkest dark? Which areas connect?


Step 4: Build Values Slowly

Start with light pressure. Add midtones. Deepen the darkest form shadow and the darkest part of the cast shadow. Leave highlights lighter. Compare areas instead of trying to remember a fixed pencil pressure.


Step 5: Check the Cast Shadow

The cast shadow should agree with the light source. If the lamp is on the left, the shadow usually extends generally to the right. Its exact shape depends on the object, surface, distance, and size of the light source.


Step 6: Use Contrast on Purpose

Decide where you want the viewer to look first. Stronger contrast can help create a focal point. Softer contrast in other areas can keep them quieter.


Step 7: Reflect and Revise

Place your drawing a few steps away or view it at a smaller size. Ask whether the object still looks solid. If not, compare the values again. You may need a lighter light area, a darker shadow area, or a clearer cast shadow.

Use this short reflection frame: “My light source is ____. My strongest contrast is ____. One change that improved the form was ____.”
