Introduction
A coordinate grid is a way to show exact locations using two number lines. The horizontal number line is the x-axis, and the vertical number line is the y-axis. The axes meet at the origin, written as (0, 0).
A point on the grid is named with an ordered pair, such as (3, 2). The first number tells you how far to move along the x-axis. The second number tells you how far to move along the y-axis. A helpful rule is: x first, y second.
In Grades 5–6, coordinate grids help you connect arithmetic, geometry, maps, graphs, games, and problem solving. You will begin with points in the first quadrant and then explore all four quadrants.

Parts of a Coordinate Grid
The x-axis and y-axis
The x-axis runs from left to right. The y-axis runs from bottom to top. The two axes cross at the origin.
When you read a coordinate grid, check the scale. One square might represent 1 unit, 2 units, 5 units, or another amount.

The origin
The origin is the point where the x-axis and y-axis meet. Its ordered pair is (0, 0).
If a point lies on the x-axis, its y-coordinate is 0. For example, (4, 0) is on the x-axis.
If a point lies on the y-axis, its x-coordinate is 0. For example, (0, 3) is on the y-axis.
Ordered pairs
An ordered pair is written as (x, y). The order matters.
For example, (2, 5) and (5, 2) name different locations. To plot (2, 5), start at the origin, move 2 units along the x-axis, and then move 5 units parallel to the y-axis.

Plotting Points
First-quadrant coordinates
In the first quadrant, both coordinates are positive. A point such as (4, 3) is found by moving 4 units to the right and then 3 units up.
Use this method:
- Start at the origin: Begin at (0, 0).
- Move along the x-axis: Use the first coordinate.
- Move parallel to the y-axis: Use the second coordinate.
Always check the point after plotting it. Ask yourself, “Did I move x first and y second?”
All four quadrants
A full coordinate plane is divided into four regions called quadrants.
In Quadrant I, x is positive and y is positive.
In Quadrant II, x is negative and y is positive.
In Quadrant III, x is negative and y is negative.
In Quadrant IV, x is positive and y is negative.
Points on the axes are not inside any quadrant.

Reading Coordinates
To read a plotted point, imagine moving from the origin to the point.
First, read the horizontal position to find x. Then read the vertical position to find y.
Suppose a point is 3 units left of the origin and 4 units above it. Its coordinate is (-3, 4).
If another point is 2 units right and 5 units below the origin, its coordinate is (2, -5).
The signs of the coordinates tell you the direction from the origin.
Coordinate Grids in Real Life
Coordinate grids are useful whenever an exact location is important.
A city map can use letters and numbers to identify squares. A video game can store a character’s location with coordinates. A designer can place shapes at exact positions. A scientist can plot measurements on a graph. A mathematician can study shapes by describing the coordinates of their vertices.
You can also use coordinate grids to create pixel art. Each colored square can be placed by following a coordinate.
Shapes on Coordinate Grids
You can draw a shape by plotting several ordered pairs and connecting them in order.
For example, plot (1, 1), (5, 1), (5, 4), and (1, 4). Connect the points and you get a rectangle.
Coordinates can also help you compare side lengths. If two points have the same y-coordinate, the segment between them is horizontal. If two points have the same x-coordinate, the segment is vertical.
This connects coordinate grids with geometry, rectangles, distance, and symmetry.
Common Mistakes and Helpful Checks
One common mistake is reversing the coordinates. Remember that (x, y) means horizontal first, vertical second.
Another mistake is ignoring negative signs. Moving to x = -4 means moving left of the origin. Moving to y = -3 means moving below the origin.
A third mistake is reading the wrong scale. Before plotting or naming a point, check how much each grid interval represents.
A useful self-check is to describe the movement aloud: “From the origin, I move ___ units horizontally and ___ units vertically.”
