Why Do You Breathe?

The Lungs and the Bronchial Tree
Your two lungs sit in your chest and are protected by your rib cage. Inside them, the airways branch again and again, rather like the branches of an upside-down tree. This branching system gives air many routes to reach the alveoli.

The airways are not just empty tubes. Their inner surfaces help trap and move unwanted particles away from the deeper parts of the lungs. Coughing is one way your body can help clear irritating material from the airways.
How Breathing Works
Your lungs do not pull air in by themselves. Breathing depends on changes in the space inside your chest. A large dome-shaped muscle called the diaphragm lies below the lungs.
During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward. Muscles between the ribs also help lift and expand the rib cage. The chest space becomes larger, so air flows into the lungs. During quiet exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes and moves upward. The chest space becomes smaller, so air flows out.


Watch the animation closely. Notice that the diaphragm changes position as air moves in and out. A model can show this idea, but a model is always simpler than a real human body.
Gas Exchange in the Alveoli
The alveoli are tiny air sacs surrounded by very small blood vessels called capillaries. Their walls are thin, which helps gases move across them. Oxygen moves from the air in the alveoli into the blood. At the same time, carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the alveoli so it can be breathed out.

This is called gas exchange. The respiratory and circulatory systems work as a team: the lungs exchange the gases, while the blood transports oxygen to body cells and carries carbon dioxide back toward the lungs.
Breathing Rate and Exercise
Your breathing rate is the number of breaths you take in a certain amount of time. When you are resting, your body needs less oxygen than it does during active movement. When you run, dance, cycle, or play a fast game, your muscles use more energy. Your breathing usually becomes faster and deeper so more air can move through the lungs.
You can investigate this safely by counting your breaths while sitting quietly, then counting again after a short period of ordinary physical activity approved by your teacher. One breath is one complete inhale-and-exhale cycle. Do not use breath-holding contests as an experiment.
Keeping Your Respiratory System Healthy
You can support healthy lungs by being physically active, avoiding tobacco smoke and vape aerosol, and paying attention to air quality when pollution or wildfire smoke is high. Washing your hands and following good cough and sneeze habits can also reduce the spread of many respiratory infections.
Secondhand tobacco smoke is especially harmful to children because their lungs are still developing. If you have asthma or another breathing condition, follow the plan given by your healthcare professional and tell a trusted adult if breathing becomes difficult.
Healthy choices do not mean that every breathing problem can be prevented. Illnesses such as asthma can have many causes and triggers. The important goal is to understand your body, reduce avoidable risks, and ask for help when you need it.
