Introduction

Living things are not all exactly alike. Even within one species, individuals can differ in size, color, speed, strength, beak shape, fur thickness, or many other features. These differences are called variation. Some differences are inherited from parents. When an inherited feature helps an organism survive and reproduce in a particular environment, that feature can become more common over many generations.

An adaptation is an inherited characteristic that helps an organism live successfully in its environment. Adaptations may involve body structures, colors, life processes, or inherited behaviors. A polar animal with thick insulation, a bird with a beak suited to its food, or an insect whose color makes it harder for predators to see are examples of features that can be adaptive.

The snowshoe hare above has a white winter coat that can make it less easy to see in snowy surroundings. Camouflage does not make an animal invisible, and it is not useful in every setting. Whether a trait helps depends on the environment.


Big Idea: Populations Change Over Generations

A population is a group of organisms of the same species living in the same area. Natural selection happens when individuals with some inherited traits are more likely than others to survive and reproduce in a particular environment. Their offspring may inherit those useful traits. Over many generations, the helpful traits can become more common in the population.

This does not mean that an individual animal changes because it "tries" or "needs" to adapt. Individuals are born with different combinations of traits. Natural selection acts on those differences across generations.

The flowchart shows the main pattern: variation exists, the environment creates challenges, some inherited traits give an advantage, and the individuals with those traits may leave more offspring. Over time, the population can change.


Four Steps to Understand Natural Selection

  1. Variation: Individuals in a population have differences.
  2. Inheritance: Some of those differences can be passed from parents to offspring.
  3. Survival: In a certain environment, some inherited traits can help individuals survive long enough to reproduce.
  4. Reproduction: Individuals with helpful inherited traits may leave more offspring, so those traits can become more common over generations.

Natural selection is one important process in evolution, which means changes in populations across generations. The environment does not "choose" on purpose. Instead, different traits lead to different chances of surviving and reproducing.

The video introduces natural selection with more vocabulary than you need for this course. Focus on three questions while you watch: What differences exist in the population? Which difference helps in that environment? How could the helpful trait become more common?


What Is an Adaptation?

An adaptation is useful only in relation to an environment. A thick coat may help in a cold climate but may be a disadvantage in a very hot one. A long, narrow beak may help a bird reach certain foods, while a short, strong beak may be better for cracking hard seeds.

Adaptations can be grouped in simple ways:

  1. Structural adaptations: Body features such as beak shape, fur, claws, or leaf shape.
  2. Physiological adaptations: Inherited ways the body works, such as conserving water.
  3. Behavioral adaptations: Inherited behavior patterns that improve survival or reproduction, such as migration in some species.

Not every helpful action is an adaptation in the evolutionary sense. For example, learning to use an umbrella keeps you dry, but that learned behavior is not an inherited biological adaptation.

As you watch the Smithsonian video, notice how each animal has features that work well in its own habitat. Try to explain the link between one feature and one survival challenge.


Example: Darwin's Finches

Finches on the Galápagos Islands are famous because differences in their beaks are connected with different foods. Some beaks are better for crushing hard seeds, while others are better for eating small seeds, insects, or other foods. Over many generations, environments and food sources can favor different inherited beak forms.

The important idea is not that a bird changes its beak when food changes. Instead, birds are born with variation. If certain inherited beak shapes work better for the available food, those birds may have a better chance to survive and reproduce.

Charles Darwin studied nature in many places, including the Galápagos. Evidence from living organisms, fossils, geology, and later scientific research helped scientists develop and test explanations of evolution by natural selection.


Example: Peppered Moths

The peppered moth is a classic example of natural selection. There are light and dark forms. During the Industrial Revolution in parts of Britain, soot darkened many tree surfaces and air pollution reduced pale lichens. Moths that matched their background were harder for bird predators to spot, so color could affect survival.

When pollution later decreased in many places and pale lichens returned, the advantage could shift again. This example shows an important rule: a trait is not simply "good" or "bad." Its value depends on the environment.


Adaptation Is Not a Choice

Organisms do not decide which inherited traits their offspring will need. Variation already exists in populations, and new variation can also arise through genetic changes. Natural selection changes how common some inherited traits are when those traits affect survival or reproduction.

Remember these ideas:

  1. A single organism does not evolve during its lifetime.
  2. Populations can change across many generations.
  3. Natural selection works with inherited variation.
  4. The environment affects which traits give an advantage.
  5. An adaptation is helpful in a particular environment, not in every possible environment.


Think Like a Scientist

Scientists use evidence to explain patterns in nature. You can practice the same kind of reasoning. First observe differences. Then ask whether a difference could be inherited. Next ask how the environment might affect survival or reproduction. Finally predict what could happen over many generations.

A strong scientific explanation connects evidence and reasoning. For example: "More brown insects survived on dark bark. If color is inherited, brown parents may leave more brown offspring. Over generations, brown color may become more common."
