E9 M - Binge-watching – Pros, cons and habits
Mini-Beschreibung: Erschließe einen kurzen englischen Text und eine Infografik zu binge-watching und diskutiere mögliche Vor- und Nachteile. Du arbeitest auf einem B1-orientierten M-Niveau: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again. Gesundheitsinformationen werden nur allgemein und quellenbezogen besprochen; aus ihnen werden keine individuellen Diagnosen abgeleitet.

Quick start – Look, think, speak: What can you see? What does the picture suggest about modern TV habits? Give two ideas in English.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Beschreibe zuerst nur, was du siehst. Deute das Bild erst danach. Satzstarter: I can see … / This could mean … / Maybe …
Einleitung
Streaming makes it easy to watch several episodes one after another. This is often called binge-watching. In this aiMOOC, you read, view, compare, discuss and write about this habit. The aim is not to label binge-watching as simply “good” or “bad”. You learn to give a balanced opinion, use evidence carefully and react to other viewpoints.
Level: Klasse 9, M-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, B1-orientiert.
Competence focus: listening, viewing, reading, speaking, writing, mediation, vocabulary, pronunciation and text/media skills.
I-can goals
- I can understand the main ideas of a short text about binge-watching.
- I can read a simple infographic and describe important patterns.
- I can listen for gist in a natural English video and catch some details.
- I can compare possible advantages and disadvantages.
- I can discuss my view and react politely to another opinion.
- I can write a short, connected opinion text with reasons and examples.
- I can mediate the main message of a short German situation in English.
- I can check whether a claim is a fact, an opinion or only an association.
Activate your knowledge

Work with a partner. Answer in short English sentences.
- What makes you continue watching a series?
- What can stop you after one episode?
- Is watching three short episodes the same as watching three long episodes? Explain.
- Which is easier for you: stopping at a natural ending or at a cliffhanger?
Useful language: I usually … / One reason is … / It depends on … / For me … / I’m not sure, but …
Deutsch-Hilfe: Du musst keine privaten Sehgewohnheiten nennen. Du kannst über eine erfundene Person oder allgemein über viewers sprechen.
Reading
Short input text: One more episode?
Read first without a dictionary. Underline words you already know. Then guess the meaning of two new words from context.
One more episode?
Streaming platforms let viewers choose when they want to watch a series. Binge-watching usually means watching several episodes one after another, although researchers do not use one single definition. For some people, a longer viewing session is a fun way to relax, enjoy a story or spend time with friends. Watching episodes close together can also make it easier to remember characters and plot details.
However, long sessions can take time away from sleep, homework, exercise or other plans. Some studies have found associations between heavier binge-watching and problems such as poor sleep or stress. An association is a link in data; it does not prove that one thing caused the other, and it does not diagnose an individual person.
Features such as autoplay and dramatic cliffhangers can make it easy to continue. So a useful question is not only “Is binge-watching good or bad?” Better questions are: Why am I watching? How long did I plan to watch? What else matters today?
Key idea: A balanced discussion uses evidence, examples and careful words such as can, may and might.
Reading check
- Give the text a new English title.
- Find two possible reasons for binge-watching.
- Find two things a long session can take time away from.
- Explain in one sentence why an association is not a diagnosis.
- Find three cautious words or phrases.
- Write one question you would ask the author.
Hint 1: Look at the first sentence of each paragraph.
Hint 2: Search for contrast words such as however and so.
Deutsch-Hilfe: association = statistischer Zusammenhang; daraus folgt nicht automatisch Ursache oder Diagnose.
Infographic
Important: The following class data are fictional and only used for language practice. They are not research results.
| Fictional class snapshot: “How many episodes in one longer session?” | Students | Visual |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 episodes | 6 | ██████ |
| 3–4 episodes | 8 | ████████ |
| 5 or more episodes | 3 | ███ |
| I rarely watch series | 3 | ███ |
Read the infographic.
- Which group is the largest?
- Compare the two smallest groups.
- Write one sentence with more … than.
- Write one sentence with fewer … than.
- What can the infographic show?
- What can it not show?
Model: More students report 3–4 episodes than 5 or more episodes.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Die Grafik zeigt nur eine erfundene Verteilung. Sie erklärt keine Gründe und sagt nichts über Gesundheit, Ursache oder Wirkung aus.
Listening and Viewing
BBC Ideas: Why do we binge-watch?
First viewing – gist: Watch without stopping. Choose two ideas you understood.
- Reasons why people keep watching
- How streaming design can affect viewing
- How stories and characters can hold attention
- Possible effects of long viewing sessions
Second viewing – detail: Watch again. Note 3–5 keywords. Then compare your notes with a partner.
Respond: Which point from the video is similar to the reading text? Which point is new?
Hint: You do not need every word. Listen for repeated words, examples and contrast.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Erst Hauptidee verstehen, dann Details. Untertitel kannst Du beim zweiten Durchgang nutzen.
A second perspective
ABC News: Binge Watching of Television is Becoming a New Norm
This older news clip shows how binge-watching was discussed when streaming was becoming more common.
- What words make the report sound positive, negative or neutral?
- What has changed in streaming since this report was made?
- Which statements are observations and which are opinions?
- Compare the news style with the BBC Ideas video.
Short language video
Use this short ESL video to check the basic meaning of binge-watching. After viewing, explain the term in your own English words. Do not copy a full definition.
Context vocabulary

| Word or phrase | Simple meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| binge-watch | watch several episodes one after another | We binge-watched three episodes. |
| episode | one part of a series | The episode ended at midnight. |
| streaming | watching media online | Streaming gives viewers more choice. |
| autoplay | the next video starts automatically | Autoplay can make stopping less obvious. |
| cliffhanger | an exciting ending with an open question | The cliffhanger made us curious. |
| habit | something you often do | My weekend viewing habit is different. |
| advantage | a possible positive point | One advantage is flexibility. |
| disadvantage | a possible negative point | One disadvantage can be lost time. |
| evidence | information used to support a claim | Check the evidence before you agree. |
| association | a link found in data | An association does not automatically prove cause. |
Use again: Choose four words and make a 30-second spoken summary.
Pronunciation and fluency
Speak for clarity, not for accent imitation.
- Mark the stressed part: BINGE-watch, E-pi-sode, STREAM-ing, cliff-HANG-er.
- Practise chunks, not single words: one more episode / on the other hand / in my opinion / the evidence suggests.
- Read this sentence in one smooth rhythm: On the other hand, a long session might take time away from other plans.
- Record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless you actively choose to share them.
Fluency challenge: Speak for 45 seconds. Use first, however and overall.
Speaking
Think – Pair – Respond
Choose one statement.
- Binge-watching is a good way to enjoy a complex story.
- Autoplay makes it harder to stop at the time you planned.
- Watching with friends is different from watching alone.
- The number of episodes is less important than the total time.
Round 1: Give your opinion and one reason.
Round 2: Your partner asks one follow-up question.
Round 3: Improve your answer with an example or contrast.
Round 4: Use your improved idea in a new pair.
Useful phrases:
I agree up to a point because …
I see it differently because …
That may be true, but …
Can you give an example?
What makes you say that?
My main point is …
Mini debate
Question: Should streaming services make the “next episode” choice more visible instead of starting it automatically?
Prepare two arguments for one side. Then switch sides and add one argument you did not use before.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Ziel ist nicht “gewinnen”, sondern begründen, reagieren und Gegenargumente verstehen.
Functional grammar
Careful claims with can, may and might
Use can for a possible effect or general possibility.
Use may or might when you want to sound more cautious.
Too strong: Binge-watching causes stress.
More careful: Long binge-watching sessions may be linked with stress in some studies.
Task: Make these claims more careful.
- Autoplay makes everyone watch longer.
- Binge-watching is bad for all teenagers.
- Watching several episodes always destroys sleep.
- Streaming platforms control viewers.
Possible language: can / may / might / for some people / in some situations / studies have found an association
Connecting ideas
Use these connectors:
because → reason
however → contrast
although → contrast inside one sentence
therefore → result
for example → example
overall → conclusion
Combine: The story is exciting. I planned to stop after one episode.
Possible answer: Although I planned to stop after one episode, the story was exciting.
Writing
A balanced opinion paragraph
Write 120–150 words on this question:
“Is binge-watching mostly a useful way to enjoy stories, or can it become a problem for time management?”
Use this structure:
- Opening: State the topic.
- Pro: Give one possible advantage and an example.
- Con: Give one possible disadvantage and an example.
- Evidence check: Use cautious wording.
- Conclusion: Give your own balanced view.
Sentence starters:
One advantage is …
However, …
This can be helpful when …
A possible problem is …
The evidence suggests a link, but …
Overall, I think …
Feedback → improve → use again
Exchange texts with a partner.
Peer feedback checklist:
- Is the opinion clear?
- Is there at least one reason and one example?
- Is there a contrast word?
- Are strong health claims avoided?
- Are can, may or might used where useful?
- Is the conclusion connected to the argument?
Then revise your text. Keep your own original version so you can see what changed.
Use again: Turn your improved paragraph into a 60-second spoken statement without reading every sentence.
Mediation
Situation: Your English-speaking exchange partner does not understand this German school message:
Für einen Medienprojekttag soll eine Klasse über Streaming-Gewohnheiten sprechen. Niemand muss private Nutzungsdaten zeigen. Beispiele dürfen erfunden sein. Aufnahmen sind freiwillig und sollen ohne Zustimmung nicht veröffentlicht werden. Aussagen aus KI-Tools und Online-Quellen müssen überprüft werden.
Explain the key message in 60–90 English words. Do not translate word for word.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Nenne nur die wichtigsten Informationen: Thema, Privatsphäre, freiwillige Aufnahmen, Faktencheck.
Error analysis
Correct the sentences and explain the rule in simple words.
- I am agree with this point. → I agree with this point.
- In the other hand, streaming is flexible. → On the other hand, streaming is flexible.
- Autoplay can causes longer sessions. → Autoplay can cause longer sessions.
- People which like cliffhangers may continue. → People who like cliffhangers may continue.
Improve: Write one new correct sentence for each pattern.
Media and source check

Then and now: Compare this historical television image with today’s streaming habits. What changed? What stayed similar?
For factual work, separate these three levels:
- Source says: What exactly does the source report?
- We can infer: What is a reasonable interpretation?
- We cannot claim: What would go beyond the evidence?
Research reviews show that binge-watching is defined in different ways, usually around watching multiple episodes in one sitting. Research also discusses both entertainment-related motives and possible negative outcomes of excessive viewing. Studies reporting links with sleep or mental-health variables describe associations; they should not be turned into a diagnosis of an individual person.
Sources for fact-checking:
- Wikipedia: Binge-watching
- Systematic review: Understanding the Phenomenon of Binge-Watching
- Systematic review and meta-analysis on binge-watching and mental-health problems
- Bildungsplan Baden-Württemberg: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klassen 9/10
AI check: If an AI tool gives you facts, sources or feedback, verify important claims with a reliable source. Keep your own text visible and decide yourself which suggestions improve it.
Safe and fair media work
- Use fictional profiles instead of private viewing histories when a task does not require personal data.
- Do not collect private social-media data from classmates.
- Audio or video recordings are voluntary and can stay private.
- Do not upload another person’s recording without clear permission.
- Do not send private student data to external AI tools.
- Understandability is more important than sounding like a native speaker.
- Avoid cultural stereotypes when you talk about media habits.
