E9 G - Use dictionaries for meaning, grammar and pronunciation
E9 G - Use dictionaries for meaning, grammar and pronunciation
Mini-description: Use a bilingual or simple learner's dictionary to check meaning, word class, pronunciation and an example. Always check if the meaning fits the context. Do not translate the whole text.

Einleitung
You meet a new word. What do you do?
English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.
A good dictionary can help you make a quick decision. You do not need every detail. You need the information that helps you understand and use the word.
| Step | Your action |
|---|---|
| English first | Read the sentence before and after the new word. |
| Understand | Guess the meaning from the context. |
| Respond | Say or write your first idea. |
| Ask | What do I need: meaning, word class, pronunciation or example? |
| Hint | Use a bilingual or simple learner's dictionary. |
| Improve | Check if the dictionary meaning fits the sentence. |
| Use again | Make your own short sentence. |
G-Niveau rule: Communication comes first. Check a few important language points, not every small detail.
I-can-Ziele
After this aiMOOC, you can say:
- Dictionary use: I can find a useful meaning without translating the whole text.
- Word class: I can identify common labels such as noun, verb, adjective and adverb.
- Pronunciation: I can use audio and simple IPA information to improve pronunciation.
- Context: I can check whether a dictionary meaning fits a sentence.
- Example: I can use a dictionary example to build my own sentence.
- Communication: I can ask for help when a word is still unclear.
Vorwissen: What do you already do?
Choose one new English word from your current unit. Do not look it up yet.
| Quick check | Yes / not yet |
|---|---|
| I read the whole sentence first. | |
| I make a meaning guess. | |
| I know whether the word is a noun, verb or adjective. | |
| I can find a pronunciation button. | |
| I can use an example sentence. |
Warm-up question: Which step is already easy for you? Which step needs practice?
Media start: listen before you read

First listen: Play the audio. Do not read the word below before your first listening attempt.
Your response: What word do you hear? Say it once.
Now check: The word is dictionary.
Listen again and focus on the stressed syllable.
Notice: English can sound different in different varieties. Your goal is clear, understandable speech, not accent-free speech.
Listening and Viewing
Watch the first short video. Listen for the word and compare British and American pronunciation.
Before replaying: Say what you noticed.
Second viewing: Listen again. Then answer: Is the word easy to recognise in both versions?
Now watch the pronunciation of example.
After the first viewing, try the word yourself. After the second viewing, check your stress and rhythm.
Transcript after your listening attempt: The key target word is example.
The four things to check
When you open a dictionary entry, focus on four things first.
| Check | Simple question | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| meaning | What does the word mean here? | It helps you understand the sentence. |
| word class | Is it a noun, verb, adjective or adverb? | It helps you build a correct sentence. |
| pronunciation | How does the word sound? | Audio and IPA can support clear speech. |
| example | How is the word used in a real sentence? | It shows useful sentence patterns. |
Stop after these four checks unless you need more information.
Reading: context first
Read this fictional practice text.
Green Corner Bike Shop – Saturday helper
We need a friendly student for Saturdays. You greet customers, organise small items and answer simple questions. Experience is useful but not necessary. You should be available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To apply, write a short email to the fictional manager, Ms Reed.
Task: Do not translate the text. Use the context.
- available: Guess the meaning. Then check it in a dictionary.
- apply: Guess the meaning. Then check the word class and one example.
- experience: Decide which meaning fits this job context.
Context question: Which dictionary meaning would not fit the job text? Explain with one short reason.
One word can have more than one meaning
Read the two sentences.
A: The coach stops near the station.
B: Our coach shows us a new training exercise.
The word coach is a noun in both sentences, but the meaning changes.
| Sentence | Context clues | Meaning that fits |
|---|---|---|
| A | stops, station | a bus for longer journeys |
| B | training, exercise | a person who trains a team |
Dictionary strategy: Do not take the first meaning automatically. Match the meaning with the context.
Context vocabulary
These words help you talk about dictionary work.
| Word | Simple learner meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| entry | the information about one word in a dictionary | I found the word in the entry. |
| definition | a short explanation of meaning | The definition is easy to understand. |
| label | a short note such as noun or informal | Check the word-class label. |
| stress | the part of a word you say more strongly | Listen for the stress. |
| context | the words and situation around a word | The context helps me choose the meaning. |
| sense | one meaning of a word | This word has more than one sense. |
Functional grammar: use the word class
A dictionary often uses short labels.
| Label | Word class | Example |
|---|---|---|
| n | noun | a plan |
| v | verb | to plan |
| adj | adjective | careful |
| adv | adverb | carefully |
Look at plan:
We plan the trip. Here, plan is a verb.
Our plan is simple. Here, plan is a noun.
Grammar check: The word class helps you decide where and how a word can work in your sentence.
Pronunciation and Fluency

You do not need to learn the full IPA chart. Use it as a support.
A learner dictionary may show pronunciation between slashes, for example /pen/. Audio lets you hear the word. IPA lets you see important sound information.
Three-step pronunciation routine:
- Listen: Play the dictionary audio once.
- Repeat: Say the word slowly, then naturally.
- Stress: Notice which syllable is stronger.

Fluency tip: Put the word into a short phrase, not only on its own.
Example: apply → apply for a job
Example: available → available on Saturday
Recordings are optional. If you practise with a recording, keep it private unless your teacher has given a clear school-approved task. No upload is required.
Speaking: ask, clarify, use again

Use these short phrases:
| Situation | Useful phrase |
|---|---|
| You are not sure. | What does ... mean here? |
| You need the word class. | Is ... a noun or a verb here? |
| You need pronunciation. | How do you pronounce ...? |
| You want to check context. | Does this meaning fit the sentence? |
| You want an example. | Can you give me a short example? |
Pair task: Student A chooses a word from the job text. Student B asks one dictionary question and gives one short answer. Change roles.
Writing: dictionary help without copying
Write a short fictional email for the bike-shop task.
Goal: 60–80 words.
| Part | Sentence starter |
|---|---|
| Greeting | Dear Ms Reed, |
| Reason | I am writing to apply for ... |
| Information | I am available ... |
| Strength | I am friendly and ... |
| Closing | Kind regards, |
Use a dictionary for only three target words.
For each target word, check:
meaning → word class → pronunciation if needed → example → your own sentence
Keep your own text. Do not replace the whole text with a machine-generated version.
Mediation: explain the useful meaning
A classmate asks in German:
„Was heißt available in diesem Jobtext?“
Do not translate the whole advertisement. Give only the useful information.
Possible response:
It means that you can work at that time. In this text, the shop needs someone who can work on Saturdays.
Now mediate the meaning of apply in the same way. Keep the English key word.
Help levels
Choose only the help you need.
| Help level | Hint |
|---|---|
| Hint 1 | Underline two or three context words. |
| Hint 2 | Check the word class in the sentence. |
| Hint 3 | Compare two dictionary meanings with the sentence. |
| Hint 4 | Read one example sentence and copy only the sentence pattern, not the full sentence. |
Feedback and error analysis
Use this short feedback code.
| Code | Check | Improve |
|---|---|---|
| M | meaning | Choose the meaning that fits the context. |
| WC | word class | Check noun, verb, adjective or adverb. |
| P | pronunciation | Listen again and mark the stressed syllable. |
| E | example | Compare your sentence pattern with a dictionary example. |
Error example: “I am availability on Saturday.”
The dictionary shows that available is an adjective. Improve the sentence:
I am available on Saturday.
The important step is not only correcting the sentence. Say why the first version did not work.
Digital and AI check
No external AI tool is required for this course.
If a school-approved digital tool gives you a meaning or correction:
- Check the source: Compare the key word with a reliable learner dictionary.
- Check the context: Make sure the suggested meaning fits your sentence.
- Check feedback: Do not accept a correction you cannot explain.
- Keep your own text: Save your first version and mark your changes.
Never enter private social-media data, real application details or other personal information into an external service for this task.
Can-do check
Tick one box after the practice.
| I can ... | not yet | with help | on my own |
|---|---|---|---|
| guess a meaning from context | |||
| find the correct dictionary sense | |||
| identify the word class | |||
| use audio or IPA support | |||
| build my own example sentence | |||
| ask a useful clarification question |
Use again: Choose one new word tomorrow and repeat the same four checks.
Transfer
Use the method in another school subject or real-life text.
Possible text types: a game instruction, a travel page, a simple science text, a fictional job advert or a short news text.
Do not translate the whole text. Choose two important words and show how the context helped you.
