Einleitung
English first: Look – understand – respond – ask – use a hint – improve – use again.
Du musst nicht jedes Wort verstehen. Finde zuerst title, categories, numbers and the biggest difference. Übersetze nicht den ganzen Text.

Vorwissen: Quick start

Sentence starters: I use ... / I often ... / A chart can show ...
Media-use survey: the fictitious infographic
Teen Media Survey – fictional practice data
Question: What do 40 students use at least three times a week?
| Media activity | Students | Percent |
|---|---|---|
| Short videos | 28 | 70% |
| Music or podcasts | 24 | 60% |
| Messaging | 22 | 55% |
| Gaming | 16 | 40% |
| News websites | 10 | 25% |
First look – 20 seconds: Do not calculate. Find:
- the highest number
- the lowest number
- two activities that are close
Understand the survey
Model: More students watch short videos than play games.
Use these patterns:
- ... students use ...
- More students ... than ...
- Fewer students ... than ...
- ... is the most common activity.
- ... is the least common activity.
Check:
- How many students use music or podcasts?
- Which activity is most common?
- Which activity is least common?
- Are gaming and messaging equally common?
Functional grammar: simple comparisons
Keep the grammar useful and small.
| Function | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| compare more | more ... than | More students use messaging than news websites. |
| compare fewer | fewer ... than | Fewer students play games than watch short videos. |
| highest | the most | Short videos are the most common activity. |
| lowest | the least | News websites are the least common activity. |
Accuracy focus: Use more/fewer ... than and a plural noun after students. Communication comes first.
Listening and Viewing

Listening 1: hear the main idea
Before listening: Cover the transcript. A partner or teacher reads the dialogue at a moderate, clear speed. Listen twice.
Task A – first listening: What is the topic?
- school rules
- media use
- weekend jobs
Task B – second listening: Note only three numbers.
Transcript – open only after your listening attempt
Mia: We asked 40 students about media use. Short videos are number one. Twenty-eight students watch them at least three times a week.
Ben: Music and podcasts are also popular. Twenty-four students use them.
Mia: What about gaming?
Ben: Sixteen students play games. That is fewer than the number for messaging.
Mia: And news websites?
Ben: Ten students use them. That is the lowest number.
After listening: Say one fact and one comparison.
Viewing: how to read data
Viewing mission: Watch only a short part first. Listen for data, graph and bar graph. Then pause and say: A bar graph helps me compare data.
Datenschutz-Hinweis: Nutze externe Videos nur, wenn die schulischen Datenschutzregeln dies erlauben. Du kannst alle Kernaufgaben dieses Kurses auch ohne das Video bearbeiten.
Real chart detective – optional

This is a real Commons chart about phones at school. Do not read every detail. Find only:
- the topic
- one high value
- one low value
Then say one simple sentence: The chart shows ...
Important: This real chart is an extra viewing task. Its data are not the fictional survey data above.
Reading
Read this short report:
The survey asked 40 students about five media activities. Short videos are the most common activity. Music and podcasts are second. Messaging is also common. Gaming is less common than messaging. News websites have the lowest number. The survey is small and fictional, so we should not use it to make claims about all teenagers.
Reading strategy:
- Find the topic.
- Circle the five media activities.
- Underline two comparison words.
- Match each sentence to the table.
Kontextwortschatz

| common | used by many people | Messaging is common. |

No full translation: Learn the word in the sentence and use it again.
Aussprache und Fluency
Say the words in short chunks:
- surVEY
- perCENT
- comPARE
- MEdia
- COMmon
Fluency line: More students use messaging | than news websites.
Speak clearly. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.
Speaking
Ask – answer – compare
Work with a partner.
A asks: Which activity is more common: gaming or messaging?
B answers: Messaging is more common than gaming.
Then change roles.
Useful questions:
- Which activity is most common?
- How many students use ...?
- Is ... more common than ...?
- What do you think about this result?
Opinion with a reason: I think this result is interesting because ...
Mini presentation
Speak for 30–45 seconds. Use:
- one opening sentence
- two facts
- one comparison
- one short opinion
Frame: The survey is about ... . ... students ... . More students ... than ... . I think ... because ... .
A recording is optional. Keep it private unless you have clear permission to share it.
Writing
Write 4–6 sentences about the fictional survey.
Starter: The survey asked 40 students about media use.
Your text should include:
- the most common activity
- the least common activity
- one more ... than comparison
- one fewer ... than comparison
Do not copy the model word for word. Keep your own first version so you can see your progress.
Optional work-style email frame: Imagine you are helping a school media team. Write four short sentences: greeting – key result – comparison – closing. Use only the fictional survey data.
Mediation
Your German-speaking classmate asks: Was zeigt die Umfrage?
Explain two important results in simple German. Do not translate every line. Keep the numbers correct and say that the survey is fictional.
Then switch back to English and say one comparison.
Hilfestufen
Help 1 – keywords: short videos – 28 / gaming – 16 / news – 10.
Help 2 – sentence frame: More students ___ than ___.
Help 3 – model: More students watch short videos than play games.
After using a hint, close it and try a new sentence with different data.
Feedback and Fehleranalyse
Check your work in this order:
- Meaning: Are the numbers correct?
- Comparison: Did you use than?
- Grammar: Did you use more or fewer correctly?
- Clarity: Can another learner understand your sentence?
Common error: More students messaging than gaming. Improve: More students message than play games. Better and simpler: Messaging is more common than gaming.
Feedback should help you improve your own text, not replace it.
Responsible media and AI use
- Use only fictional practice data or data that may legally be used.
- Do not enter private profiles, private chats or personal social-media data.
- Check AI-generated facts, sources and feedback before using them.
- Keep your own text and make changes yourself.
- Do not send recordings, names or class data to an external AI service without clear permission.
- Avoid culture stereotypes. Describe only what the data actually show.
Transfer: use the language again
Create a tiny fictional class survey with three safe categories, for example music, games, videos. Use invented results for 20 students.
Write:
- one fact
- one more ... than sentence
- one fewer ... than sentence
- one question for a partner
