Your fictional visit

You and a friend are planning a day in the Lake District National Park in England. Your start point is Windermere. You want to visit the area around Ambleside and return in the afternoon.

The visit is fictional. The training timetable and training weather below are invented for this lesson. For a real journey, always check current official information.

Map task: Find Windermere. Then find Ambleside. Point to a possible direction of travel.

Say: We start in Windermere. Ambleside is ...

Media stop: arriving without a car

Quick response: Which picture shows rail travel? Which picture shows bus travel?

Ask: Can we continue by bus?

Information card 1: transport

Training information – not a live timetable

Journey Option A Option B
Train arrives at Windermere 09:10 —
Bus from Windermere to Ambleside 09:25 09:55
Bus from Ambleside to Windermere 16:10 16:40
Walk from bus stop to picnic area about 20 minutes —

Understand: Your train arrives at 09:10. Which bus gives you more waiting time?

Respond: I prefer the ... bus because ...

Ask: What time is the return bus?

Real-world check: Before a real trip, use current transport information, for example Traveline or the official Lake District travel information.

Information card 2: weather

Training forecast – fictional

Time Weather Temperature Wind
Morning light rain 13 °C moderate
Midday cloudy 15 °C moderate
Afternoon brighter 17 °C light

Understand: Is the morning dry?

Respond: No. We should take ...

Ask: Will it be warmer in the afternoon?

Real-world check: For a real visit, check a current forecast and warnings.

Viewing task – first time: Listen for only three things: temperature – rain – wind.

Second time: Write three key words. Do not stop after every sentence.

After viewing: Explain one weather decision: We should ... because ...

Information card 3: visitor rules

The Lake District National Park asks visitors to respect, protect and enjoy the countryside. Important ideas include following signs, taking litter home, caring for nature and checking routes and local conditions. Fires and barbecues are not permitted in the Lake District National Park.

Read for meaning:

Rule Simple reason
Follow local signs and marked paths. It protects places and helps you stay on route.
Take your litter home. It protects wildlife and the landscape.
Do not light a fire or barbecue. It reduces fire risk and damage.
Check your route and conditions. It helps you plan safely.

Official source check: Countryside Code – Lake District National Park

Viewing challenge: Which idea is closest to the message of the video?

Follow signs – leave litter – ignore paths – make a fire

Information card 4: what to take

Item Useful sentence
reusable water bottle We should take a reusable bottle.
rain jacket We need a rain jacket because it may rain.
map or saved route We should check the route before we start.
small bag for litter We can take our litter home.

Decision: Choose three items. Give one reason.

Reading

Read once for the main idea.

Mia and Leo are planning a day near Windermere. Their train arrives in the morning. The forecast says light rain first, but the afternoon may be brighter. They want to travel by bus and walk on marked paths. They take water, rain jackets and a small bag for litter. They also check the return bus before they start. Leo wants a long walk, but Mia asks about the weather and the time. They choose a shorter route because they want enough time for the bus home.

Understand:

Question Short answer frame
How do they continue their journey? They go by ...
Why do they take rain jackets? Because ...
Why do they choose a shorter route? Because ...
What responsible action do they plan? They ...

Mediation

Situation: Your German-speaking classmate has not understood the visitor instructions. Explain the important points in simple English. Do not translate every word.

German information card: Nehmt euren Müll wieder mit. Bleibt auf ausgeschilderten Wegen. Prüft vor dem Start Wetter und Rückfahrt. Offenes Feuer und Grillen sind im Nationalpark nicht erlaubt.

Mediation frame:

The important points are: ...

You should ...

You mustn't ...

Before you go, check ...

Functional grammar

Use grammar to make decisions clear.

Function Form Example
advice should + base verb We should take the bus.
rule / strong need must + base verb We must follow the signs.
prohibition mustn't + base verb We mustn't light a fire.
reason because + clause We need a jacket because it may rain.
possibility may + base verb It may rain.

Accuracy focus: After should, must and may, use the base verb.

Correct: We should take a bottle.

Not: We should to take a bottle.

Help levels

Help 1 – words: bus, train, rain, path, litter, bottle, return, check.

Help 2 – sentence starters: We should ..., We must ..., We mustn't ..., because ..., What time ...?

Help 3 – model: We should take the 09:25 bus because we do not want to wait long. It may rain, so we need jackets. We must stay on marked paths and take our litter home.

Use only the help you need.

Feedback

Two stars and one next step:

Check Feedback
Message is clear I understand your plan.
Reason is clear Your because-sentence helps.
Next step Add one transport / weather / rule detail.

Improve: Change one sentence after feedback.

Use again: Say your improved sentence to another partner.

Error analysis

Find and improve the problem.

Sentence Better version
We should to take the bus. We should take the bus.
We must taking our litter home. We must take our litter home.
It may rains. It may rain.
We take the bus because more responsible. We take the bus because it is more responsible.

Priority: First make the message understandable. Then fix one central grammar point.

Transfer

Plan the same type of visit for another place.

Use four checks:

Check Question
Map Where are we going?
Weather What conditions may change the plan?
Rules What should or must we do?
Transport How do we get there and back?

Important: Do not copy old transport or weather information into a real trip. Check current sources again.
