E8 M - Write a story with controlled perspective

Mini-Beschreibung: Write a short story with a clear perspective, logical sequence, useful narrative tenses and a coherent ending. Level: Klasse 8, M-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg.

Look first: What could happen on the next page? Say three ideas in English. Then choose one idea and give one reason.

Learning route: English first → context → try → ask → hint → kurze deutsche Hilfe, wenn nötig. Keine Vollübersetzung.

I can ...

  1. I can choose and keep a clear first-person or third-person limited perspective.
  2. I can order events so the reader can follow the story.
  3. I can use past simple, past continuous and past perfect for clear time relations.
  4. I can use passive forms when the action or result is more important.
  5. I can report statements, questions and commands.
  6. I can write a short ending that connects to the main problem.
  7. I can check my own text for perspective, tense, sequence and clarity.

Vorwissen: Quick check

Try first. Complete these ideas orally:

  1. Yesterday I ... → one finished event.
  2. At 6 p.m. I was ... → background action.
  3. Before I arrived, ... had ... → earlier past event.

Hint: Main event = past simple. Background = past continuous. Earlier event = past perfect.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Erst selbst versuchen. Denke an: Hauptereignis – Hintergrund – noch früheres Ereignis.

Listening and Viewing: Point of view

Watch 1: Do not stop the video. Which point of view is easiest for you to recognise?

Watch 2: Focus on first person and third person. Write one advantage and one limit for each.

Ask: What can the narrator know?

Hint: A controlled perspective means: do not suddenly reveal thoughts or information your narrator cannot know.

Reading: The blue backpack

Context: The characters below are fictional.

At 8:20 on Friday evening, I was waiting at the bus stop after basketball practice. Rain hit the glass roof. I had put my phone in my school bag because the battery was almost dead. Then I noticed a blue backpack under the bench. No one else was there.

I checked only the outside pocket and found a bus ticket and a card with the name “Samira K.” While I was thinking what to do, a boy ran across the street. “Have you seen a blue bag?” he shouted.

I asked him to describe it first. He said his sister had left it on the bus and that he had promised to find it. We still could not be sure, so the bag was taken to the driver’s office at the station.

Ten minutes later, Samira arrived with her mother. The driver asked which seat she had used. She answered correctly and showed her student ID. The driver told us to wait while he checked the details. Then the bag was returned.

On the bus home, I felt relieved. I had wanted to help quickly, but checking the story first had been the safer choice.

Try: Mark one sentence that shows background, one that shows an earlier event and one passive sentence.

Sequence and plot

Use the image: Point to the place where the backpack is found, where the decision is made and where the problem is solved.

Think: A sequence is not only “what happened next”. A strong plot also shows cause and effect.

Try: Finish: Because the narrator could not be sure who owned the bag, ...

Context vocabulary

  1. narrator: the voice that tells the story
  2. perspective: the position from which the story is told
  3. sequence: the order of events
  4. background: what was already happening
  5. clue: information that helps you understand a situation
  6. suspense: a feeling of uncertainty about what will happen
  7. coherent: clear and logically connected
  8. ending: the final part that closes the main situation

German help if needed: narrator = Erzählinstanz, clue = Hinweis, coherent = schlüssig. Nutze die Hilfe erst nach Deinem eigenen Versuch.

Pronunciation

Say the words in short chunks, then in a sentence:

  1. NAR-ra-tor – stress the first syllable.
  2. per-SPEC-tive – stress the middle syllable.
  3. se-QUENCE – stress the second syllable.
  4. co-HE-rent – stress the middle syllable.
  5. sus-PENSE – stress the second syllable.

Goal: Be easy to understand. Accent-free speech is not the goal.

Listening and Viewing: Narrative tenses

Focus for M-level: Listen for past simple, past continuous and past perfect. If the video mentions a more advanced past perfect progressive form, you do not need to use it in this course.

Try: After watching, explain the three target tenses with one example from The blue backpack.

Functional grammar for stories

Function Useful form Example
Main events past simple I noticed a blue backpack.
Background past continuous I was waiting at the bus stop.
Earlier past past perfect She had left it on the bus.
Focus on action/result passive The bag was returned.
Report a statement reported speech with backshift He said his sister had left it.
Report a question statement word order The driver asked which seat she had used.
Report a command told + object + to The driver told us to wait.

M-level target: Use the passive and reported statements, questions and commands in your own writing.

Speaking

Pair task – 60 seconds each:

  1. Retell the backpack story from the narrator’s perspective.
  2. Your partner asks two follow-up questions.
  3. Add one reason for the narrator’s decision.
  4. Give feedback: Was the perspective controlled? Was the sequence clear?

Optional recording: Record only if you want to. Keep recordings private or in the agreed school environment. Do not upload personal data without explicit permission.

Writing: Your controlled story

Task: Write 120–160 words.

Choose one starter:

  1. When I opened the classroom door, everyone had gone.
  2. Maya was cycling home when she saw a light in the empty sports hall.
  3. The package was left outside the library, but no name was written on it.

Build your story:

  1. Set the scene.
  2. Add a trigger.
  3. Show one complication or decision.
  4. Use at least two narrative tenses.
  5. Use one passive sentence.
  6. Add one piece of reported speech.
  7. Finish with a coherent ending.

Perspective rule: First person knows only what “I” can know. Third-person limited follows one character closely.

Gestufte Hilfen

Hint 1 – sequence: first → then → while → because → after that → finally.

Hint 2 – tense choice: background = was/were + -ing; main event = past simple; earlier event = had + past participle.

Hint 3 – reported speech: “I lost it.” → She said she had lost it. / “Where is it?” → He asked where it was. / “Wait here.” → She told us to wait there.

German help: Wenn Dein Text stockt, prüfe zuerst nur eine Sache: Wer erzählt? Danach ordnest Du die Ereignisse. Erst dann korrigierst Du die Zeitformen.

Direct feedback and error analysis

Correct the problem and explain it in one short sentence.

  1. I knew Samira was scared, although I had never met her. → Perspective problem: show visible evidence instead of certain knowledge.
  2. I was waited at the bus stop. → Use the past continuous correctly.
  3. The bag returned by the driver. → Build the passive with was + past participle.
  4. He asked where did she sit. → Reported questions use statement word order.
  5. She said she loses the bag earlier. → Use backshift and the earlier-past relation.

Self-feedback code: P = perspective, S = sequence, T = tense, G = grammar, C = coherence. Mark only two priority errors first, then revise.

Mediation

Explain the backpack story to a German-speaking classmate in three short German sentences. Keep the key situation, the decision and the ending. Do not translate the full story.

Transfer

Rewrite 4–5 sentences from The blue backpack in third-person limited with the narrator named Mia. Keep the same facts. Do not add Samira’s thoughts.

Use the storyboard to plan a new story in 4–6 frames before you write.

AI, media and privacy

Use AI only as a checked learning aid, not as a replacement for your own text. Check language level, facts and feedback. Do not enter private social-media data or personal profiles. External AI tools or uploads should only be used when your school setting and teacher allow them. Fictional profiles are enough for all tasks in this course.
