E8 G - Use digital tools to understand English
E8 G - Use digital tools to understand English
Mini-Beschreibung: Use dictionary, audio, captions and playback controls smartly. Do not translate every unknown word. First use context, then try, ask for a hint and use German help only if you still need it.

Einleitung
Digital tools can help you understand English. The important question is: Which tool do you need, and when?
Your learning path is:
English first → context → try → ask → hint → German help if needed.
You do not need to understand every word. Focus on the main idea, key details and useful words. Use captions, audio buttons, replay and dictionaries as tools — not as automatic translators.
Privacy rule: Use only school-safe material. Profiles in this course are fictional. Recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless your teacher gives a safe school space. Do not upload recordings or texts to external AI tools without permission. AI can give hints, but you must check language, facts and feedback. Your own thinking and writing stay important.
I-can-Ziele
- I can understand the main idea of a short audio or video.
- I can replay a difficult part instead of translating everything.
- I can use English captions after a first listening try.
- I can use a dictionary for important words and listen to pronunciation.
- I can guess some words from context.
- I can explain my opinion with a reason.
- I can write a short connected text with a clear structure.
- I can decide when German help is really needed.
Vorwissen: What do you already do?
Think for one minute.
- When you do not understand a word, what is your first step?
- Do you use replay or slow playback?
- Do you read English captions?
- Do you use dictionary audio?
- Can you explain the main idea even when some words are unknown?
Write three short answers in English. If needed, use one German keyword only.
Media start: Watch like a smart learner

Watch the short BBC Learning English video below. First try: captions off. Do not stop for every unknown word. No account or comment is needed; do not post private data.
First watch: What is the main topic? Write one sentence.
Second watch: Use English captions. Write two useful tips you hear.
Third watch: Replay one short difficult part. Only now check the transcript if you still need it.
Quick reflection: Which tool helped most: replay, captions, transcript or context? Give one reason.
The smart tool order

Use this order when English feels difficult:
- Context: Look at the topic, image, title and words you already know.
- Try: Listen or read once without stopping too much.
- Ask: Say what you already understand and ask a partner or teacher one clear question.
- Hint: Replay one short part or turn on English captions.
- Dictionary: Check only important words that block understanding.
- Audio: Listen to the dictionary pronunciation and repeat.
- German help: Use a short German explanation only if the English clues are not enough.
Stop rule: If you understand the message, you do not need every word.
Reading: A smart study session
Read the text. Do not use a dictionary at first.
Ava is preparing a short report about a school project. She watches a two-minute English video. At first, she understands the topic but misses two details. She replays one part and notices the word “survey”. She guesses that it means a set of questions because the speaker talks about asking students. Then Ava turns on English captions and checks her guess. Only one word still blocks the meaning, so she opens an online dictionary. She reads the English definition, listens to the audio and writes the word in her notes. She does not translate the full video. After ten minutes, Ava can explain the main idea and three details in her own words.
Task 1: What did Ava do before using the dictionary?
Task 2: Why did she guess the meaning of “survey”?
Task 3: Which tool did she use last?
Task 4: Write one sentence: “Ava learned well because …”
Kontextwortschatz
Use the meaning around the word first.
- caption: text on the screen that shows spoken words
- clue: information that helps you find an answer
- context: the words, topic and situation around a new word
- replay: play a part again
- definition: an explanation of a word
- key word: an important word for the message
- guess: an answer you try before you know for sure
- block: stop you from understanding
Mini-strategy: Ask: “Can I understand the sentence without this word?” If yes, keep going.
Dictionary skills

A useful dictionary entry can show a definition, example sentence, word type and audio.
Try this with one key word from the reading:
- Read the English definition first.
- Look at one example sentence.
- Listen to the audio.
- Say the word once or twice.
- Write your own short sentence.
Do not copy a full dictionary entry. Take only the information you need.
Listening and viewing: 3-pass method
Use a short clip with one or two clear speakers and moderate, clear speech.
Pass 1 – gist: Listen for the topic. No transcript.
Pass 2 – details: Replay. Use English captions if needed.
Pass 3 – check: Use the transcript only after the listening attempt.
Feedback check: If your first answer was wrong, mark the reason:
- I missed a key word.
- I listened for every word.
- I read captions too early.
- I did not replay the difficult part.
- I knew the word in writing but did not recognise the sound.
Pronunciation: Understand before you sound perfect

Clear communication is more important than accent-free speech. Use dictionary audio to connect spelling and sound.
Listen to a word, then:
- look at the spelling,
- listen again,
- repeat once,
- use the word in a short phrase.
For extra practice, use this pronunciation video. You do not need to copy an accent. Listen for clear sounds and word stress.
Practice words: caption, replay, meaning, useful.
Speaking
Work with a partner or speak quietly to yourself.
Prompt: “Which digital tool helps you most when English is difficult?”
Use connected statements: “I usually use … because … First, I … Then, I … If I still do not understand, I …”
Try to speak for about 30–45 seconds. A private recording is optional. Do not upload it unless your school provides a safe place and your teacher asks you to.
Writing
Write a short study tip email of about 80–100 words to a fictional classmate called Sam.
Use this structure:
- Greeting
- One problem
- Two useful digital tools
- One example
- Your opinion with a reason
- Closing
Helpful language: “First, try …” “Then you can …” “This helps because …” “If that is not enough, …”
Do not let an AI write the email for you. If you use AI for a hint, check the level and keep your own wording.
Mediation: short help, not full translation
Your German-speaking partner asks: “Was soll ich machen, wenn ich ein englisches Video nicht verstehe?”
Explain the smart tool order in 3–4 short German sentences. Keep only the important information. Do not translate the whole English lesson.
Functional grammar: notice useful forms
You can use simple forms actively: “Replay the part.” “You can turn on captions.” “Try the context first.” “Sam says that captions help him.”
You only need to recognise these harder forms here: “The video was recorded at school.” → passive, receptive “Ava had checked the context before she opened the dictionary.” → past perfect, receptive
Do not force passive or past perfect into your own speaking or writing.
Gestufte Hilfen
Hint 1: Look at the title, image and key words.
Hint 2: Replay only the difficult sentence.
Hint 3: Turn on English captions.
Hint 4: Check one key word in a dictionary.
German help: Ask for a short German explanation only after the English steps.
Fehleranalyse
After a task, do not only count mistakes. Ask why they happened.
- Sound problem: I knew the word but did not hear it.
- Vocabulary problem: The key word was new.
- Strategy problem: I used the wrong tool too early.
- Detail problem: I understood the topic but missed one fact.
- Writing problem: My ideas were clear, but the sentences were not connected.
Choose one error and write one next step.
Transfer: Use the strategy on new material
Choose a new short English text, audio or video from a school-approved source. Keep it short.
Use the smart tool order. At the end, write:
- the main idea,
- two details,
- one useful new word,
- the tool that helped most,
- one thing you will do differently next time.
Can-do-Check
Rate yourself: yes / almost / not yet.
- I can listen once before using captions.
- I can replay one difficult part.
- I can use context to guess meaning.
- I can check only important words.
- I can use dictionary audio.
- I can explain an opinion with a reason.
- I can write a short connected study tip.
If you choose “not yet”, return to one matching section and try again.
