E8 G - Give an opinion and support it

Einleitung

Mini-Beschreibung: Give your opinion on a familiar topic and support it with at least one clear reason or example.

In this aiMOOC, you practise one useful skill: say what you think and explain why. The language is short, clear and connected. You do not need difficult grammar. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.

Look and think: What could the people say? Choose one familiar topic: school lunch, homework, phones at school, hobbies or a class trip. Say one short opinion in English.

I can

  1. I can give a clear opinion.
  2. I can add at least one reason.
  3. I can add a simple example.
  4. I can connect my ideas with because, so, but or for example.
  5. I can ask for help if I do not understand.

Help ladder

English first → context → try → ask → hint → German help if needed.

Try first. Then use the topic, picture and key words. Ask: What does … mean? or Can you give me a hint? Only then use a short German help. Do not translate the whole text.

Medien-Einstieg

Choose one symbol and complete: I think school breaks should be longer because …

Add one example if you can: For example, …

Vorwissen

Which phrases do you already know?

Function Useful English
opinion I think … / In my opinion, …
reason because … / One reason is …
example For example, …
contrast but …
result so …

Quick try: Say two connected sentences about a hobby, school subject or free-time activity.

Listening and Viewing

First watch: no transcript, no pausing. Listen for useful opinion phrases.

First viewing:

  1. Which phrase for giving an opinion do you hear?
  2. Does the speaker give more than one useful phrase?
  3. Which phrase would you like to use?

Second viewing: Pause after a useful phrase and repeat it. Focus on clear stress, not a perfect accent.

After listening – mini support: Important phrases can include I think …, In my opinion …, and ways to explain or react. Use only the phrases you understand.

Reading

Topic: Should our class have one phone-free break every school day?

Mia: I think one phone-free break is a good idea because people can talk to each other more. For example, my friends and I often play a quick game when our phones stay in our bags. I still think phones are useful after school, but one short break without them can be relaxing.

Read once for the main idea. What is Mia’s opinion?

Read again. Find:

  1. one opinion
  2. one reason
  3. one example
  4. one contrast

Context vocabulary

English Short help
opinion what you think
reason why you think it
example a real or possible case
useful hilfreich
relaxing entspannend
agree zustimmen
disagree nicht zustimmen
support an idea eine Idee begründen

Do not learn every word first. Use the context, then check only the words you really need.

Pronunciation

Read these chunks aloud: I THINK … because … For EXAMPLE … In my O-PIN-ion …

Stress the important word. Speak in short chunks. A clear rhythm is enough.

Partner check: Can your partner understand your opinion and reason? If yes, your pronunciation works.

Speaking

Choose one topic: school lunch – homework – class trips – school clubs – phones – sports

Use this short structure:

1. Opinion: I think …

2. Reason: … because …

3. Example: For example, …

4. End: So I think …

Mini-dialogue with fictional profiles:

Ava: I think school clubs are important because students can try new things.

Leo: I agree. For example, a music club can help students meet new people.

Ava: Yes, and it can make school more interesting.

Try it: Speak for about 30–45 seconds. One reason is enough. Add an example if you can.

Recording is optional. If you record yourself, keep the recording private unless you actively choose to share it. Do not upload personal recordings or private social-media data.

Writing

Task: Write a short opinion message with 60–90 words.

Topic example: Should students have more project days at school?

Use this plan:

  1. Start with your opinion.
  2. Give one clear reason.
  3. Add one example.
  4. Finish with a short final sentence.

Small writing frame:

I think …

One reason is …

For example, …

So …

You may use fewer sentence starters if you can write independently.

Mediation

A German-speaking classmate asks what Mia thinks about a phone-free break.

Explain the main idea, one reason and one example in German. Do not translate every sentence. Keep important English terms only if they help.

Functional grammar

Grammar helps your message. Do not use grammar just to make the text difficult.

Useful productive language: I think school clubs are useful. I think this because students can meet people. For example, they can make new friends.

Reported speech without backshift: Mia says, “Phone-free breaks are useful.” → Mia says that phone-free breaks are useful.

Reception only at G level: You may see passive forms or the past perfect in texts. You only need to understand the main meaning.

The rule was changed last year. → Something happened to the rule.

He had finished his homework before the club started. → The homework was finished first.

You do not need to produce these forms in this course.

Feedback and error analysis

Check your answer directly:

Check Yes?
I gave an opinion. □
I gave at least one reason. □
My reason fits my opinion. □
I used because, so, but or for example. □
My message is understandable. □

Common problem 1: “I think school clubs are good.” → Add a reason: because students can try new things.

Common problem 2: “Because school clubs are fun.” → This is not a full answer. Add the opinion first.

Common problem 3: Your example does not match the reason. Check: Does the example really show your reason?

AI use: You may use AI for hints or feedback only when your teacher allows it. Check the language level, facts and feedback. Do not let AI replace your own text.

Transfer

New topic: Should your class have one outdoor lesson every month?

Give: one opinion + one reason + one example

Try without the writing frame first. Use the help ladder only if needed.

Can-do check

Now I can …

  1. give a clear opinion. □
  2. support it with one reason. □
  3. add a simple example. □
  4. connect short ideas. □
  5. understand the main opinion in a short text or video. □
  6. ask for a hint instead of translating everything. □

Next step: E8 G - Agree and disagree politely
