E8 G - Explain a chart in simple English

Einleitung

In diesem aiMOOC lernst Du, ein einfaches Diagramm auf Englisch zu beschreiben. Du konzentrierst Dich auf die Hauptaussage und auf wenige wichtige Werte. Du musst nicht jede Zahl nennen.

English first: Look at the chart. Say what it shows. Find the highest and the lowest value. Add one comparison.

Mini task: What can you see? Say three words in English before you read on.

Wenn Du noch unsicher bist, ist das okay: Erst probierst Du es auf Englisch. Danach bekommst Du Hinweise. Eine vollständige Übersetzung brauchst Du nicht.

I-can-Ziele

Am Ende kannst Du:

I can ... Ziel
I can say what a chart shows. Thema des Diagramms nennen.
I can find the highest and lowest value. wichtigste Werte erkennen.
I can compare two values. zwei Werte einfach vergleichen.
I can give a short chart description. drei bis fünf verbundene Sätze sprechen oder schreiben.
I can check my own text. einfache Fehler finden und verbessern.

Vorwissen aktivieren

Look at the three chart types. Do not study details. Just notice the shapes.

Say:

  1. This is a bar chart.
  2. This is a line graph.
  3. This is a pie chart.

For this course, the bar chart is most important.

Kontext: A fictional class survey

The data below are fictional. No real student data are used.

Favourite free-time activities – fictional class, 20 students

Activity Students Simple bar
Gaming 8 ████████
Sports 6 ██████
Music 4 ████
Reading 2 ██

Try first. Complete these ideas orally:

  1. The chart shows ...
  2. The highest value is ...
  3. The lowest value is ...
  4. ... is higher than ...

Model: A short chart description

The chart shows favourite free-time activities in a fictional class. Gaming is the most popular activity with eight students. Sports comes second with six students. Reading is the least popular activity with two students.

This is enough for E8 G: one main idea and a few important values.

A simple 4-step plan

Step Question Useful English
1 What is the chart about? The chart shows ...
2 What is the main message? The most popular ... is ...
3 Which values are important? ... has ... students.
4 Can you compare? ... is higher than ...

Do not describe every bar.

Listening and Viewing

First watch without subtitles. Listen only for the chart words. The video is longer and more advanced than this course, so use only the first short part for orientation.

First viewing: Listen for bar graph, line graph and pie chart.

Second viewing: Watch again and pause when a chart type is named.

After your listening attempt: You may switch on the English subtitles or open the transcript function. Do not try to understand every sentence. Your task is only to identify chart types and the basic idea of describing visual information.

German help if needed: Höre nur auf die drei Diagrammbegriffe. Ignoriere schwierige Prüfungssprache im Video.

Reading

Read this short text:

The chart shows how 20 students spend their free time. Gaming has the highest number. Eight students choose gaming. Six students choose sports. Music is lower with four students. Reading has the lowest number with two students.

Now answer in English:

  1. What is the chart about?
  2. What is the highest value?
  3. What is the lowest value?
  4. Which two activities are close?

Kontextwortschatz

English Simple meaning Example
chart Diagramm The chart shows ...
value Wert The highest value is eight.
highest am höchsten Gaming has the highest value.
lowest am niedrigsten Reading has the lowest value.
higher than höher als Sports is higher than music.
lower than niedriger als Music is lower than sports.
about ungefähr About ten students ...
compared with verglichen mit Gaming is high compared with reading.

Learn the phrases, not isolated word lists.

Aussprache

Say the words slowly, then in a sentence.

Word Pronunciation help Sentence
chart /tʃɑːt/ The chart shows ...
value /ˈvæljuː/ The value is six.
highest /ˈhaɪɪst/ This is the highest value.
lower /ˈləʊə/ Music is lower.

Goal: Be easy to understand. You do not need a perfect accent.

Speaking

Use the fictional class chart.

Round 1 – without help: Speak for about 20 seconds.

Round 2 – with help:

  1. The chart shows ...
  2. The most popular activity is ...
  3. ... students choose ...
  4. ... is higher than ...
  5. The least popular activity is ...

Round 3 – connected ideas: Add and, but or while.

Example: Gaming is the most popular activity, while reading is the least popular.

Opinion with a reason: After the factual description, you may add one clearly marked opinion: I think the result is interesting because ...

Do not mix opinion and data.

Writing

Write four or five sentences about the fictional chart.

Structure:

Part Your job
Sentence 1 Say what the chart shows.
Sentence 2 Give the main message.
Sentence 3 Give one important value.
Sentence 4 Compare two values.
Sentence 5 Optional: one short final point.

Self-check:

  1. Did I write what the chart shows?
  2. Did I use only a few important values?
  3. Did I compare at least two values?
  4. Are my sentences connected?
  5. Did I check singular and plural?

Mediation

Your partner does not understand this sentence:

Sports is lower than gaming but higher than music.

Explain the meaning briefly in German. Do not translate the whole course. Then return to English and point to the three bars.

Functional grammar

For E8 G, use simple forms that help you describe data.

Function Useful form Example
describe present simple The chart shows four activities.
compare comparative Sports is higher than music.
name an extreme superlative Gaming has the highest value.
connect and, but, while Music is lower, but reading is the lowest.
report a statement says + present form Mia says the chart shows four activities.

Receptive only at G level: You may meet sentences such as The data were collected in a survey or The chart had been prepared before the lesson. You only need to understand the basic meaning. You do not need to produce these forms.

For reported speech, stay simple: Mia says the chart shows ... No backshift is required here.

Gestufte Hilfen

Hint 1 – English: Look at the title. Then find the biggest and the smallest bar.

Hint 2 – English: Start with The chart shows ... Then use highest, lowest and higher than.

Hint 3 – English: Use this frame: The chart shows ___. The highest value is ___. ___ is higher than ___. The lowest value is ___.

German help if needed: Nenne zuerst das Thema. Wähle dann nur den höchsten und niedrigsten Wert sowie einen Vergleich. Übersetze nicht Satz für Satz.

Direct feedback and error analysis

Check these common mistakes:

Learner sentence Better sentence Why?
Gaming have eight students. Gaming has eight students. Singular subject: has.
Sports is six. Six students choose sports. Say what the number means.
Gaming is more high than music. Gaming is higher than music. Use the comparative higher.
Reading is the less popular. Reading is the least popular. Use least for the lowest point.

Fast feedback rule: First say what is clear. Then correct one important error. Then try the sentence again.

Transfer: A new simple chart

Look at the new bar chart.

Try: Say one main message and two important details.

Ask yourself: What is high? What is low? What can I compare?

Hint: Do not explain every bar.

Responsible use of media and AI

Use fictional or anonymous data for practice. Do not publish private social-media data, names or recordings.

If you record your voice, keep the recording private unless you freely decide to share it. Do not upload recordings automatically.

If you use AI for feedback, first write your own text. Ask the AI to check one or two points, for example: Is my comparison clear? Check the answer yourself. AI can make mistakes about language level, facts and feedback. It should not replace your own text.

Can-do-Check

Can-do Yes Not yet
I can say what a chart shows. □ □
I can find the highest and lowest value. □ □
I can compare two values. □ □
I can speak for about 20–30 seconds about a simple chart. □ □
I can write four or five connected sentences. □ □

If you tick Not yet, return to the 4-step plan and the hints.

Folgekurs

Next step: Compare two charts in simple English. There you compare two simple charts and choose the most important similarities and differences.
