E7 M - Retell an important chapter

Mini-description: Retell an important chapter in your own words. Use only a few notes, keep the important events in the right order and make your retelling easy to follow.

Einleitung

You have read an important chapter. Now somebody asks: “What happened?” You do not need the whole book in front of you. A few good notes can help you retell the chapter clearly.

In this aiMOOC, you move from notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.

English first: Try in English. Use the context, pictures and sentence starters. Ask for German help only if you need it.

I can ...

I can ... My goal
identify the most important events in a chapter keep only useful notes
put events in a clear order use sequence words
retell a chapter in my own words speak for about one minute
write a short retelling use simple past correctly
react to a partner and improve my retelling use feedback

Media start: What makes a good retelling?

Look at the picture for 20 seconds.

  1. Speak: What could the reader do to keep the listeners interested?
  2. Words: Find three useful words: for example voice, pause, eye contact.
  3. Transfer: Which idea also helps when you retell a chapter?

Hint: A good retelling is not only correct. It is also clear for the listener.

Vorwissen: What do you already know?

Say one sentence for each prompt.

Prompt Sentence starter
main character The chapter is mainly about ...
place It takes place ...
problem The main problem is ...
important event One important thing that happens is ...
ending At the end of the chapter ...

German help if needed: main character = Hauptfigur, important event = wichtiges Ereignis, ending = Ende.

Notice and understand

Viewing 1: Focus on the essentials

Watch the short video once without stopping.

Then watch again and answer in English:

  1. What should you mention about the characters?
  2. Why is the setting useful?
  3. What are major events?
  4. Which small details could you leave out?

Quick feedback: If your notes contain every small detail, reduce them. If they contain only one event, add the problem and the result.

Viewing 2: Beginning, middle and end

While watching, listen for the basic order:

beginning → middle → end

After watching, say one useful sequence word for each part.

Possible help: first – then – after that – finally.

Reading: A short practice chapter

This practice text is fictional and written for this course.

Chapter 6: The rehearsal key

On Tuesday afternoon, Maya and Ben stayed at school to practise for the class concert. Their music room was locked, and the caretaker had already gone to another building. Ben wanted to go home, but Maya remembered that Ms Green sometimes left a spare key with the school secretary.

They hurried to the office, but the secretary was speaking to a parent. Maya waited, while Ben checked the time. Their bus would leave in fifteen minutes. When the secretary was free, she found the spare key and gave it to Maya.

Back at the music room, Maya opened the door. Ben rushed inside and started the backing track. They only had eight minutes, but they practised the difficult ending twice. When they finished, Maya locked the room again and returned the key.

They ran to the bus stop. The bus was already there, but the driver saw them and waited. Ben laughed and said that the short rehearsal had been worth the stress.

Find the key events

Do not copy whole sentences. Write only a few notes.

Story part Useful note
Who? Maya and Ben
Goal practise for class concert
Problem music room locked
Action ask secretary for spare key
Important result short rehearsal
Ending catch the bus

Notice: Notes are not full sentences. They help you remember. Your retelling is the full message.

Vocabulary in context

Read the sentence first. Guess the meaning. Then use the help only if needed.

Word Context Short help
locked The music room was locked. not open
spare key The secretary found a spare key. extra key
hurried They hurried to the office. moved quickly
worth The rehearsal had been worth the stress. good enough to justify the effort
ending They practised the difficult ending twice. last part

German help if needed: locked = abgeschlossen, spare key = Ersatzschlüssel, hurried = beeilten sich, worth = die Mühe wert.

Pronunciation: Make the order clear

Say the sequence words aloud:

first – then – after that – later – finally

Do not speak too fast. Stress the important content words:

First, Maya and Ben stayed at school.

Then, they found the room locked.

Finally, they caught the bus.

Goal: Verständlichkeit vor Akzentfreiheit.

Try and use

Speaking: 30-second retell

Use only the six notes from the table. Do not look at the full chapter.

Start like this:

The chapter is about Maya and Ben. They wanted to practise for their class concert. First, ...

Speak for about 30 seconds.

Hint 1: Keep the order.

Hint 2: Use at least three sequence words.

Hint 3: Use your own words.

Speaking: Partner reaction

Partner A retells the chapter. Partner B listens.

Partner B gives one short reaction:

I understood ...

One part was not clear: ...

You could add ...

Then change roles.

Direct feedback check:

  1. Did the retelling include the goal?
  2. Did it include the main problem?
  3. Did the events stay in order?
  4. Was the ending clear?

Writing: 80–110 words

Write a short retelling of the practice chapter.

Use this structure:

Part Your job
Opening name the characters and their goal
Middle explain the problem and the most important actions
Ending explain the result

Use simple past for the main events.

Useful verbs: stayed, wanted, remembered, hurried, found, gave, opened, practised, ran, waited.

Functional grammar: Simple past for a retelling

A retelling of finished events normally uses the simple past.

Regular: practise → practised, wait → waited

Irregular: go → went, find → found, give → gave, run → ran

Try:

Maya and Ben ____ at school. → stayed

The secretary ____ the key. → found

They ____ to the bus stop. → ran

Optional E-lookout: Past perfect

Use this only when you want to show that one past event happened before another past event.

When Maya and Ben reached the room, the caretaker had already left.

That is enough for this course. Do not turn your whole retelling into past perfect.

Mini-mediation

Your German-speaking friend asks what the chapter was about.

Explain the most important events in German in 3–4 sentences. Do not translate every English sentence.

Then switch back to English and say the final event.

Listening and note-taking challenge

Ask a partner or teacher to read the practice chapter aloud at a moderate natural speed.

First listening: do not write.

Second listening: write only five notes.

Then retell the chapter from the notes.

Privacy: If you record your voice, recording is voluntary. Keep it private unless you have agreed otherwise. No upload is needed.

Your own class reader

Choose one important chapter from your current English class reader.

Do not copy the chapter into this page or into an external AI tool. Use your own notes.

Make a five-note plan:

Note Question
1 Who is central?
2 What does the character want?
3 What is the main problem?
4 What important action or change happens?
5 How does the chapter end?

AI check: Use feedback, not replacement

If your school allows an AI tool, use it only for limited feedback.

Good request: “Check whether my 90-word retelling is clear for a Year 7 English learner. Name two unclear sentences. Do not rewrite the text.”

Then decide yourself what to change.

Important: Check whether the feedback fits your level. Keep your own wording. Do not let AI replace your text, and do not upload private recordings, private social-media data or copyrighted chapters without permission.

Communicate, feedback, improve

One-minute retell

Retell your own chosen chapter for about one minute.

Try to include:

who + goal + problem + key events + ending

Use 4–6 notes, not a full script.

Feedback ladder

Step Feedback
1 I understood the main event.
2 Your order was clear / unclear.
3 One useful detail was ...
4 One detail could be left out.
5 Try this sequence word: ...

Improve one part and retell it again.

Self-check: Can do

Statement Yes Not yet
I can choose important events. ☐ ☐
I can make 4–6 useful notes. ☐ ☐
I can retell in the simple past. ☐ ☐
