Fictional profile: Maya, 13, writes for a school media blog. The book and profile below are invented for this course.

Maya's Media Pick

The Secret Lighthouse

Last weekend I read The Secret Lighthouse. It is a short adventure story about two friends who find an old map near the sea. At first, I thought the story was a little slow. Then the mystery became really exciting.

I liked the two main characters because they help each other and do not give up. The chapters are short, so the book is easy to read after school. Some parts are predictable, but the ending surprised me.

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy mysteries and adventures. I would give it four out of five stars because it is exciting, easy to follow and has a strong friendship story.

First try: Get the big picture

Answer without translating every sentence.

1. What is the text mainly about?
2. Does Maya like the book?
3. Name one reason for her opinion.

Direct feedback: The text recommends an adventure story. Maya's overall opinion is positive. Possible reasons: exciting mystery, short chapters, strong friendship story, surprising ending.

Find three things

Main message = the most important point of the whole text.

Opinion = what the writer thinks or feels.

Reason = why the writer has this opinion.

Find one example of each in Maya's text.

Hint:

1. Main message: Look at the final paragraph.
2. Opinion: Look for I liked, I recommend or describing words.
3. Reason: Look for because.

Vocabulary in context

Do not learn isolated word lists first. Connect each word to the text.

Word detective

Choose the best meaning from the context.

The mystery became really exciting.

What does mystery mean here?

Try: a problem or secret that is not yet explained.

Feedback: Yes. You can often understand a new word from the words around it.

Pronunciation

Focus on clear word stress. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.

Say each word once. Then use one in a sentence.

Try: I recommend it because it is exciting.

Try: Opinion plus reason

Use this simple pattern:

I think ... because ...

Examples:

1. I think the book is exciting because the mystery gets stronger.
2. I like the characters because they help each other.
3. I recommend the story because it is easy to follow.

You can also connect ideas with:

1. but for a contrast
2. so for a result
3. because for a reason

Functional grammar: Use the present simple for your opinion: I think, I like, I recommend. Use the past simple for a finished reading or viewing experience: I watched, I read, I liked.

E-look ahead: one controlled challenge

Only if you are ready:

After I had finished the book, I recommended it to my friend.

You only need to notice this form. Do not use it in the main task yet.

Work with a partner.

Then change roles.

Mini goal: Give one opinion and one reason. React to your partner.

Communicate: Writing

Write a short recommendation about a book, film, game or story you know.

Length: 60–80 words.

Use this structure:

1. Title and type: What is it?
2. Main idea: What is it about?
3. Opinion: What do you think?
4. Reasons: Give two reasons.
5. Recommendation: Who might like it?

Useful language: It is about ... I liked ... because ... One good thing is ... However, ... I recommend it to ...

Direct feedback: Check and improve

Read your text again.

1. Circle your opinion.
2. Underline two reasons.
3. Check one connector: because, but or so.
4. Check that your recommendation matches your reasons.
5. Improve one sentence.

AI note: If an allowed AI tool gives feedback, check whether the suggestions fit your level and meaning. Do not replace your own text with an AI text.

Mediation mini-task

Your German-speaking friend asks: Is Maya's book recommendation positive?

Answer in German with only the information that matters.
