E7 G - Write a respectful online message
E7 G - Write a respectful online message
Einleitung
Mini-Beschreibung: Verfasse kurze respektvolle digitale Nachrichten und erkenne unfreundliche beziehungsweise missverständliche Formulierungen.
Level: English, Klasse 7, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

LOOK. Two people are writing online. A short message can sound friendly, neutral or too strong.
TRY. Which message sounds better?
| A | B |
|---|---|
| Send me the photo. | Could you send me the photo, please? |
HINT. Look for could, please and a friendly ending.
Hilfe auf Deutsch: Kleine Wörter können den Ton einer Nachricht verändern. Du musst nicht jedes Wort übersetzen.
I can ...
| After this course, I can ... | Check |
|---|---|
| write a short respectful online message. | ☐ |
| spot words that may sound unfriendly. | ☐ |
| make a request with Could you ...?. | ☐ |
| clarify a message when it is unclear. | ☐ |
| check my message before I send it. | ☐ |
Before you start
You already know some useful chunks:
| Chunk | Use |
|---|---|
| Hi! | greeting |
| please | polite word |
| Thanks! | friendly ending |
| Can you ...? | request |
TRY. Say one short message with two of these chunks.
Notice: What can a message sound like?

Read these messages from fictional profiles.
| Message | First feeling |
|---|---|
| Hi Sam! Could you send me the worksheet, please? Thanks! | friendly and clear |
| SEND ME THE WORKSHEET NOW. | very strong |
| Why didn't you answer??? | can sound angry |
| I need the worksheet. | clear, but quite direct |
NOTICE. Online, we often cannot see a face or hear a voice. So short messages can be misunderstood.
HINT. Think about tone: How may the message sound to the reader?
Hilfe auf Deutsch: Der Ton einer Nachricht ist nicht immer eindeutig. Großbuchstaben und viele Satzzeichen können stärker wirken als beabsichtigt.
Media check: feelings and misunderstandings

TRY. Imagine Alex receives this message:
Why are you late???
Choose one idea in your head: angry, worried or joking.
THINK. You cannot always know. Context helps.
An emoji can add a feeling, but it does not always make the meaning clear.
Understand: Friendly chunks
Use short chunks again and again.
| Job | Useful English |
|---|---|
| greeting | Hi! / Hello! |
| polite request | Could you ... please? |
| simple reason | I need it for ... |
| clarification | Sorry, I meant ... |
| friendly ending | Thanks! / See you! |
MODEL
Hi Nia! Could you send me the homework, please? I need it for tomorrow. Thanks!
TRY. Change only one part: homework → photo, link or page number.
Grammar in use: Can you ...? / Could you ...?
At this level, use the grammar for a real job.
| Form | Example | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Can you + verb ...? | Can you help me? | normal short request |
| Could you + verb ...? | Could you help me, please? | often softer and more polite |
Remember: After can and could, use the basic verb: help, send, check, tell.
TRY.
Could you ______ me the page number, please?
Possible word: send
Word order: Keep it simple
| Start | Action | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Could you | send | me the photo, please? |
| Can you | check | this message? |
| Could you | tell | me the page number? |
HINT. Start with Could you, then use a verb.
Listening and Viewing

FIRST LISTEN / WATCH. Do not read a transcript first.
Watch a short part of this BBC Learning English video. Listen for polite words and phrases.
TRY. After the first viewing, answer only these three questions:
- Did you hear please, could or would?
- Does the speaker sound friendly or angry?
- Name one polite phrase you remember.
SECOND VIEWING. Watch again. Pause after a useful phrase and repeat it.
HINT. You do not need every word. Listen for familiar chunks.
Hilfe auf Deutsch: Beim ersten Hören reicht die Hauptidee. Das Transkript oder Untertitel nutzt Du erst nach dem ersten Hörversuch.
Extra viewing: A request can sound too direct
VIEWING TASK. Find one moment where a request sounds too direct. Then listen for a softer version.
USE. Copy the pattern, not the whole sentence:
Could you ... please?
Reading: Friendly or too strong?
Read quickly. Do not translate every word.
| Message | Your job |
|---|---|
| Hi! Could you send me the link, please? Thanks! | friendly or too strong? |
| SEND THE LINK. | friendly or too strong? |
| Sorry, I meant page 14, not page 40. | clear or unclear? |
| Why are you ignoring me??? | calm or strong? |
HINT. Look at greeting, request, capital letters, punctuation and ending.
Mini-feedback
If a message feels too strong, try one change:
| Too strong | Better |
|---|---|
| Send it. | Could you send it, please? |
| Answer me. | Can you answer when you have time? |
| You are wrong. | I think we have different answers. |
| WHAT? | Sorry, I don't understand. Can you explain? |
Vocabulary in context
Learn only a small word bank.
| Word / chunk | Simple meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| respectful | polite and fair | a respectful message |
| rude | not polite | This may sound rude. |
| clear | easy to understand | Make it clear. |
| tone | how a message sounds | Check the tone. |
| context | the situation around the message | Context helps. |
| mean | want to say | Sorry, I meant Tuesday. |
TRY. Use one word in a short sentence.
Pronunciation: Clear is more important than perfect

Say these chunks slowly, then at normal speed:
| Chunk | Focus |
|---|---|
| Could you help me? | stress help |
| Could you send it, please? | stress send and please |
| Sorry, I meant Tuesday. | stress Tuesday |
TIP. Speak clearly. You do not need to sound like a native speaker.
VOLUNTARY. You may record yourself privately on your own device. No upload is needed.
Speaking: Ask and reply
Work with a partner or speak quietly to yourself.
Situation: You need a worksheet.
A: Hi! Could you send me the worksheet, please?
B: Sure. I can send it after class.
A: Thanks!
Now change one thing: worksheet → photo → page number → link.
FEEDBACK. Did you use a greeting, a polite request and a friendly ending?
Writing: Build a short message

Writing frame
| Step | Your choice |
|---|---|
| 1 | Hi ...! |
| 2 | Could you ... please? |
| 3 | I need it for ... |
| 4 | Thanks! / See you! |
MODEL
Hi Alex! Could you send me the page number, please? I need it for the homework. Thanks!
TRY. Write your own message with 2–4 short lines.
Direct feedback: Check before you send
| Check | Yes |
|---|---|
| I used a greeting. | ☐ |
| My request is clear. | ☐ |
| My words are respectful. | ☐ |
| I checked capital letters and punctuation. | ☐ |
| I did not share private information. | ☐ |
If one box is empty, improve one line and check again.
Clarify a misunderstanding
Sometimes a message is not clear. You can repair it.
| Problem | Useful repair |
|---|---|
| wrong day | Sorry, I meant Tuesday. |
| unclear request | Sorry, I mean the English worksheet. |
| message sounded strong | Sorry, that sounded too strong. |
| you need more information | Can you explain, please? |
TRY. Improve this message:
Bring it tomorrow.
Possible start:
Hi! Could you bring it tomorrow, please?
Mediation: Say the important idea
Do not translate every German word. Give the important meaning in simple English.
Situation: Deine Partnerin braucht die Seitenzahl für die Englisch-Hausaufgabe.
USE:
Hi! Could you tell me the page number, please? Thanks!
HINT. Keep the message short.
Safe online communication
Use only fictional names in this course. Do not post private social-media data.
| Safe choice | Why? |
|---|---|
| use a fictional profile | protects real identity |
| keep recordings private | no unwanted upload |
| ask before sharing another person's photo or message | respects privacy |
| remove names, phone numbers and addresses | protects personal data |
AI CHECK. If an AI tool is used in class, do not enter private data. Read its feedback critically. Improve your text; do not replace it with a completely new AI text.
Mini-transfer: Use it again
Choose one new situation:
| Situation | Start |
|---|---|
| You need a photo of the board. | Hi! Could you ... |
| You do not understand a message. | Sorry, I don't ... |
| You want to correct a time. | Sorry, I meant ... |
