Einleitung

E7 G - Getting around town hilft Dir, in einer fiktiven englischsprachigen Stadt nach dem Weg zu fragen, kurze Wegbeschreibungen zu verstehen und selbst klare Wege zu erklären.

Start with the media. Look, listen, try.

First try: Watch the BBC Learning English video once. Listen for only three chunks: go straight, turn left, turn right. Du musst noch nicht jedes Wort verstehen.

I can ...

  1. I can ask for directions: Excuse me. How do I get to the museum?
  2. I can follow directions: Go straight on. Turn left. Go past the café.
  3. I can give a short route: I can use three to five clear steps.
  4. I can check: So I go straight, then right?

Before you start

Try first. Say the English words you already know for places in a town.

Quick check: Which place is it? – a bus stop.

Need help? Denk an Orte wie Schule, Park, Bahnhof, Café oder Museum. Du brauchst nur wenige Wörter.

Greenford: our fictional town

This is Greenford. It is not a real town. North is at the top.

                 NORTH
PARK -------- LIBRARY -------- MUSEUM
 | | |
Oak Road King Road Queen Road
 | | |
BUS STOP ----- CAFÉ ----------- CINEMA
 | | |
Oak Road King Road Queen Road
 | | |
SCHOOL ------ SUPERMARKET ---- SPORTS CENTRE
                 SOUTH

Street lines connect the places. Use the map again and again.

Mini try: You are at the bus stop and face the café. Where is the café? Model: It is straight ahead.

Reading

A short street conversation

Mia: Excuse me. How do I get to the museum? Sam: Go straight on. Go past the café. Turn left at the library. The museum is next to the library. Mia: Turn left at the library? Sam: Yes. That's right. Mia: Thanks! Sam: You're welcome.

Try first: Find three direction chunks.

Check: Go straight on. – Go past the café. – Turn left at the library.

German help if needed: Mia prüft einen wichtigen Schritt, bevor sie weitergeht.

Vocabulary in context

Where is it?

Datei:UK Pedestrian Crossing Button.jpg

Use places, not long word lists.

  1. The museum is next to the library.
  2. The park is opposite the museum on the Greenford map.
  3. Go past the café.
  4. Turn left at the library.
  5. The bus stop is on the left when you face west from the café.

Try: Make one new sentence with next to or opposite.

Functional grammar

Imperatives for directions

For short directions, English often uses the base verb:

Go straight on. Turn left. Take the first right. Walk past the library.

You do not need a subject such as you in these short instructions.

Try: Complete: “_____ right at the café.” Answer: Turn.

Place words

next to = directly beside opposite = on the other side past = continue beyond a place at = at a point or landmark

E-Ausblick – nur beobachten, nicht Lernziel dieses G-Kurses: “By the time Mia reached the museum, she had asked two people for help.” Das Past Perfect wird hier nicht geübt. Passive und reported speech gehören nicht zu diesem Kurs.

Try → use

Route challenge 1

Use the Greenford map.

Start: bus stop. Face the café. Goal: cinema.

Say three steps.

Hint 1: Go straight on ... Hint 2: ... go past the café ... Model: Go straight on. Go past the café. The cinema is straight ahead.

Route challenge 2

Start: school. Face north. Goal: library.

Try first.

Hint: Go straight on. Go past the bus stop.

Possible answer: Go straight on. Go past the bus stop. The library is straight ahead.

Speaking

Role-play: Lost in Greenford

Work with a partner.

Student A – visitor Excuse me. How do I get to the ______?

Student B – local person Go straight on. Turn left / right. Go past the ______. It is next to / opposite the ______.

Student A – check So I go ______, then ______?

Change roles and choose a new place.

Feedback after each round:

  1. Was the route correct?
  2. Were the direction words clear?
  3. Did the visitor check one step?

Recording: Eine Aufnahme ist freiwillig und bleibt privat. Lade nichts ungefragt hoch. Für diese Aufgabe brauchst Du keine externen KI-Dienste.

Speaking with repair

If you do not understand, use one of these:

Could you say that again, please? Sorry, left or right? So I turn left at the café?

Mini-transfer: Your partner changes one landmark. Give the route again.

Writing

Writing frame

Write four short connected sentences.

Start: You are at the bus stop. Your friend wants to go to the museum.

Frame:

Excuse me. The museum is easy to find. First, go __________. Then, __________. Go past __________. The museum is __________ the library.

Word bank: straight on | turn left | turn right | café | next to | opposite

Check your own text: Are the steps in the right order?

Mediation

A German-speaking visitor says: “Ich suche das Kino.”

Do not translate every word. Help the person in simple English.

Start: “The cinema? Go ...”

Goal: Give only the information the visitor needs.

Feedback → improve → use again

Quick feedback card

After a route, check:

  1. Clear start? Did I know where the person starts?
  2. Clear steps? Did I use go / turn / past?
  3. Clear landmark? Did I name a place?
  4. Check? Did the listener repeat one step?

If one point is missing, improve the route and say it again.

AI check

If you use AI support in class, use it only for a hint or feedback. Check whether the English fits E7-G: short sentences, familiar chunks and a route that really works on the map. Do not let AI replace your own speaking or writing.

Self-check

Mark what you can do.

Can-do Yes Almost Not yet
I can ask for directions politely. □ □ □
I can understand left, right and straight on. □ □ □
I can follow a route on a simple map. □ □ □
I can give three to five route steps. □ □ □
