E7 G - Find details in a text
E7 G - Find details in a text
Mini-Beschreibung: Find people, places, reasons, events and opinions in a short English text. You read in small steps, use pictures and key words, and give short answers with text evidence.
Level: English as first foreign language, Class 7, Baden-Württemberg, G level.

Media start: Look first
Look at the picture. Do not translate every word. Think:
- Who? Who could be in the text?
- Where? Where could the story happen?
- What? What could happen?
- Why? Why could it happen?
Try first. Say one short sentence: I think the text is about ...

Reading idea: You are a text detective. You do not need every word. You look for the detail that answers your question.
I can ...
After this aiMOOC, you can say:
- I can find a person in a short text.
- I can find a place in a short text.
- I can find a reason with because.
- I can find an event in the simple past.
- I can find a simple opinion.
- I can give a short answer and point to words in the text.
German help – only if needed: Du suchst nicht jedes Wort. Du suchst gezielt die Information, die zur Frage passt.
Link to the curriculum
This course trains guided reading for short texts. At G level, the Baden-Württemberg curriculum for English as a first foreign language expects learners to take main ideas and details from accessible texts with targeted tasks. The difficulty of a text also depends on topic familiarity, unknown vocabulary and information density.
Bildungsplan Baden-Württemberg: Leseverstehen
Notice: Five detail questions

Use these five question types again and again:
| Detail | Question | Look for |
|---|---|---|
| Person | Who? | a name or person word |
| Place | Where? | a place word |
| Reason | Why? | because, so, to + verb |
| Event | What happened? | an action, often in the simple past |
| Opinion | What does ... think? | think, like, good, better, should |

Tip: Read the question first. Then scan the text for one useful word.
Understand: A short model text
First read: 60–90 seconds. Do not use a dictionary yet.
Green Park
On Friday, Mia met Leo at Green Park after school. They were there for a small clean-up. Leo brought gloves because the park was dirty after a football match. Near a bench, Mia found a red backpack. Inside it, there was a notebook with the name Sam. Mia said, “We should take it to the park office.” Leo thought they should ask people nearby first. In the end, they took the backpack to the office. Mia was happy because they had helped someone.

Try 1: Find the details
Answer in short English. One to six words are enough.
- Who met Mia? → ...
- Where did they meet? → ...
- Why did Leo bring gloves? → ...
- What did Mia find? → ...
- Whose name was in the notebook? → ...
- What did Mia think they should do? → ...
- What did Leo think they should do first? → ...
Hint 1: Circle names. Underline place words.
Hint 2: Find the word because.
German help – only if needed: Bei Why? suchst Du den Grund. Bei What happened? suchst Du eine Handlung.
Direct feedback
Check your answers with the text.
- Leo
- at Green Park
- because the park was dirty
- a red backpack
- Sam
- take it to the park office
- ask people nearby
If one answer is wrong, do not read the whole text again. Go back to the matching sentence and try once more.
Use: Scan, do not translate
Scanning means moving your eyes through a text to find one detail.
Try this order:
- Read the question.
- Pick one key word.
- Scan the text.
- Stop at the matching sentence.
- Read that sentence carefully.
- Give a short answer.

Example
Question: Why did Leo bring gloves?
Key word: gloves
Text clue: Leo brought gloves because the park was dirty ...
Answer: Because the park was dirty.
Vocabulary in context
Do not learn a long list. Use the words inside the story.
| Word or chunk | Meaning from context | Use it |
|---|---|---|
| clean-up | an activity to make a place cleaner | a park clean-up |
| gloves | something you wear on your hands | bring gloves |
| bench | a seat in a park | near a bench |
| backpack | a bag you carry on your back | find a backpack |
| nearby | not far away | ask people nearby |
| in the end | at the end of the story | In the end, ... |
Try: Choose two chunks and make two new short sentences.
Pronunciation: Clear is the goal
Speak slowly enough to be understood. You do not need a perfect accent.
- who starts with an h sound.
- where and why start with a clear w sound.
- In thought, make the th carefully.
- Stress the important detail: at GREEN PARK, because it was DIRTY.
Mini practice: Ask and answer: Where did they meet? – At Green Park.
Listening and viewing
First try: listen or watch without subtitles. You only need three details.
This video from the British Council gives reading tips. Your task is simple:
- Find one tip about reading.
- Find one word or picture that helps you understand the topic.
- Say: One useful tip is ...
Second try: Replay a short part. Now you may use captions if you need them.
German help – only if needed: Beim ersten Versuch geht es um die Hauptidee und einzelne Signale. Untertitel kommen erst beim zweiten Versuch.
A short listening task with two speakers
Ask a partner or teacher to read the mini-dialogue slowly. Do not look at the transcript on the first try.
Listening questions
- Who found the bag?
- Where was the bag?
- Why did Mia take it to the office?
Transcript – open after your first listening try
A: Did Mia find the bag?
B: Yes. She found it near the bench.
A: What did she do then?
B: She took it to the park office because Sam’s name was in the notebook.
Feedback: Mia – near the bench – because Sam’s name was in the notebook.
Optional strategy video
This BBC Learning English video is optional. Watch a short part chosen by your teacher. First listen for the topic. On the second try, note one reading strategy.
Functional grammar: Questions about the past
For detail questions about past events, use:
Where did + person + base verb ... ?
Where did Mia find the backpack?
Why did + person + base verb ... ?
Why did Leo bring gloves?
After did, use the base verb: find, not found; bring, not brought.
Short answer:
She found it near a bench.
Notice: The story uses simple past forms such as met, brought, found, said, thought, took. You only need them to understand and talk about finished events.
Communicate: Speaking
Work with a partner.
Student A asks one question. Student B answers. Then switch.
Question starters
- Who ...?
- Where ...?
- Why did ...?
- What happened ...?
- What did ... think?
Answer starters
- It was ...
- They were at ...
- Because ...
- First, ... Then, ...
- Mia thought ...
Feedback rule: First say one thing that is clear. Then help with one detail only.
Example: Your answer is clear. Add the place.
Writing: Three useful sentences
Use this frame.
Person: ___ was in the story.
Event: ___ found / went / took ___.
Reason or opinion: ___ because ___. / ___ thought ___.
Word bank: Mia – Leo – Green Park – backpack – office – because – thought – should – first – in the end
Write only three to five connected sentences.
Mediation: Short and selective
A German-speaking friend asks: Was ist mit dem Rucksack passiert?
Read the English model text again. Then explain the important information in two or three short German sentences. Do not translate every sentence. Keep the person, place, event and reason.
Mini-transfer: A new short text
Riverside Library
On Tuesday, Noah and Aylin went to Riverside Library for a school project. Noah wanted a book about space. Aylin found one on a return table. She thought it looked interesting. They borrowed the book because they needed facts for a poster. Before they left, Noah asked the librarian about a quiet place to work.
Find five details
- Who went to the library?
- Where did they go?
- What did Aylin find?
- Why did they borrow the book?
- What did Aylin think?
Hints: Names → place → object → because → thought.
Feedback: Noah and Aylin – Riverside Library – a book about space – because they needed facts for a poster – she thought it looked interesting.
Improve: Fix one answer
Choose one answer from this course that was difficult.
- Read only the question.
- Mark the key word.
- Find the matching line.
- Change your answer.
- Read the answer aloud once.
This is the learning loop: notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.
Digital and AI safety
Use only fictional profiles in tasks. Do not add private social-media data.
Audio or video recordings are optional and private. Do not upload recordings without permission.
If you use an AI tool for feedback, check whether the language really fits your level. Keep your own ideas and your own sentences. AI feedback can help you revise; it should not replace your text. Do not send personal recordings or private data to external services without clear permission.
Self-check: Can I do it?
Mark one box for each statement.
| I can ... | Not yet | With help | Yes |
|---|---|---|---|
| find a person | □ | □ | □ |
| find a place | □ | □ | □ |
| find a reason | □ | □ | □ |
| find an event | □ | □ | □ |
| find a simple opinion | □ | □ | □ |
| answer with words from the text | □ | □ | □ |
If you tick Not yet, repeat the mini-transfer with only three questions: Who? Where? Why?
Follow-up course
Next, practise how to find the main idea and support an answer with one text clue:
- E7 G - Find the main idea in a short text
- E7 G - Give short answers with text evidence
- Simple past
- Reading comprehension
