E7 G - A friendship problem – Ein Problem verstehen

Einleitung

A friendship problem means: Something went wrong between friends. Maybe there was a misunderstanding. Maybe somebody felt left out. In this aiMOOC you read, listen and speak about one short, fictional friendship problem.

English first: First try in English. Then use the picture, context and hints. Use German help only if you still need it.

Look at the picture. Think: What can friends talk about? How can a friend look when something is wrong?

Media task: Watch only a short part first. Listen for familiar words. You do not need to understand every word.

I can ...

  1. I can understand the main problem in a short chat.
  2. I can say how people feel with simple words.
  3. I can find important details in a short dialogue.
  4. I can use useful friendship chunks such as I'm sorry, I felt left out and Can we talk?
  5. I can write a short helpful message to a friend.

What you already know

Try these words first:

English Your idea
friend ?
message ?
sorry ?
angry ?
sad ?

Hint: Think of situations, not translations.

Notice: What happened?

Read this fictional chat. The names and messages are invented.

Person Chat
Mia Hey Leo. Why didn't you wait for me after school?
Leo I thought you were going home with Ben.
Mia No. I waited for you. Then I saw your message in the group chat.
Leo Oh. I wrote “Maybe later.” I didn't mean “I don't want to see you.”
Mia I felt left out.
Leo I'm sorry. I should have asked you. Can we talk tomorrow?
Mia Yes. Thanks.

First try:

  1. Who has a problem?
  2. What did Leo think?
  3. How did Mia feel?
  4. What does Leo do at the end?

Quick feedback: Mia and Leo have a misunderstanding. Leo thought Mia was going home with Ben. Mia felt left out. Leo says sorry and asks to talk.

German help – only if needed

left out = ausgeschlossen / nicht einbezogen

I didn't mean ... = Ich meinte nicht ...

I should have asked you. = Ich hätte dich fragen sollen.

Do not translate every sentence. Go back to the English chat and read it again.

Understand: Feelings

Mia says: I felt left out.

Leo says: I'm sorry.

Useful feeling words:

Word Simple meaning Example
upset not happy because something happened I feel upset.
confused you do not understand the situation I'm confused.
embarrassed you feel bad because other people saw something I felt embarrassed.
relieved you feel better after a problem I'm relieved now.

Mini-check: Angry and upset are not always the same. Ask: What exactly happened?

Listening / Viewing

Listen first. Do not read the transcript yet.

Ask a partner or your teacher to read the dialogue slowly two times.

Listening questions:

  1. What did Ava share?
  2. How did Jay feel?
  3. Does Ava say sorry?

Transcript – open after your listening try

Ava: Hi Jay. Are you angry with me?

Jay: A little. You shared my joke in the class chat.

Ava: I thought it was funny. I didn't know you wanted it private.

Jay: I felt embarrassed.

Ava: I'm sorry. I won't share things like that again.

Feedback: Ava shared Jay's joke. Jay felt embarrassed. Ava says sorry.

Viewing extension

This video is longer than the core task. Use only a short part if it is useful for your class. Listen for words about friendship, feelings and trust. Pause when the language becomes too difficult.

Reading: Find the important information

Read the Mia–Leo chat again.

Find Answer
Place / time after school
Mia's action She waited.
Leo's idea Mia was going home with Ben.
Problem a misunderstanding
Mia's feeling left out
Next step talk tomorrow

Reading strategy: First find names, actions and feeling words. You do not need every word.

Vocabulary in context

Chunk Use it when ...
What's wrong? you want to ask about a problem
I thought ... you explain your idea
I felt left out. you explain your feeling
I didn't mean that. something was misunderstood
I'm sorry. you apologise
Can we talk? you want to solve the problem

Try: Choose three chunks. Say them aloud.

Pronunciation

Clarity is more important than sounding like a native speaker.

Practice these short chunks slowly:

  1. I'm sorry.
  2. I felt left out.
  3. Can we talk?
  4. I didn't mean that.

Tip: Stress the important words: SORry, LEFT OUT, TALK, MEAN.

Record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless you actively choose to share them.

Try: Speak

Work with a partner.

Model:

A: What's wrong?

B: I felt left out.

A: I'm sorry. I didn't mean that.

B: Can we talk?

A: Yes.

Change one detail: a game, a school project, a message or a plan after school.

Help steps

Hint 1 – English: Start with What's wrong?

Hint 2 – sentence starters: I thought ... / I felt ... / I'm sorry ...

Hilfe auf Deutsch: Eine Person erklärt das Problem. Die andere Person hört zu, entschuldigt sich oder klärt das Missverständnis.

Use: Write

Write a short message. Use 3–5 sentences.

Writing frame:

Hi ...

I felt ... because ...

I thought ...

I'm sorry / I didn't mean ...

Can we ...?

Word bank: upset – left out – confused – sorry – talk – wait – message – friend

Feedback check:

  1. Is the problem clear?
  2. Is one feeling clear?
  3. Is there a helpful next step?
  4. Are the sentences short and understandable?

Mediation – meaning, not full translation

Your German-speaking partner asks: “Was ist zwischen Mia und Leo passiert?”

Explain the main idea in simple German in one or two sentences. Do not translate the whole chat.

Then say one simple English sentence again, for example: Mia felt left out.

Functional grammar

Use the simple past for finished actions:

I waited.

Leo wrote a message.

Ava shared the joke.

Use the present for a feeling now:

I'm upset.

I'm sorry.

Small E-outlook: past perfect

Only notice this structure:

Mia was upset because Leo had left before she arrived.

had left shows that one past action happened before another past action.

You do not need to use the past perfect freely in this course.

Communicate: Solve the problem

A useful order is:

Step Useful English
Notice Something is wrong.
Ask What's wrong?
Explain I thought ...
Name a feeling I felt ...
Repair I'm sorry.
Plan Can we talk?

Mini-transfer: Imagine a friend did not answer your message because their phone battery was empty. What could you say before you get angry?

Feedback and improve

Read your message or role-play again.

Improve one thing:

  1. Add a feeling word.
  2. Add a reason with because.
  3. Add a helpful question.
  4. Make one long sentence shorter.

Then use your improved version one more time.

Safe media and AI use

Use fictional names and fictional chats for tasks. Do not copy private messages or private social-media data into the course.

If you use an AI tool, use it only for a hint, vocabulary check or feedback idea. Check whether the language really matches your level. Your own text stays your own work.

Do not upload private recordings, chats or personal data without a clear reason and permission.
