E7 E - Create a book recommendation or trailer

Mini-description: Create a short English book recommendation, a private audio recommendation, or your own short book trailer. Make people curious without giving away major spoilers. This aiMOOC is for English as a first foreign language, Klasse 7, E-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

Einleitung

A good recommendation does more than say I liked it. You give a hook, a short spoiler-free idea of the book, your opinion with reasons, and a clear recommendation for a target audience. For a trailer, you add images, sound and timing.

Learning route: English first → try → context or media → hint → German help if needed. No automatic full translation.

Media warm-up: Watch only the opening and one short section that interests you. What makes a trailer feel exciting? Write three English keywords. Do not copy full sentences.

I can ...

  1. I can introduce a book with title, author and genre.
  2. I can give a short, spoiler-free plot idea.
  3. I can explain my opinion with reasons and examples.
  4. I can recommend a book to a clear target audience.
  5. I can speak clearly in a 45–60 second audio or short presentation.
  6. I can plan a 30–60 second book trailer with a simple storyboard.
  7. I can use media responsibly and check copyright and privacy.

What you already know

Think of a book you know well. Say or write three quick notes: Who? What problem? Why interesting? If you need help, use only keywords first.

German help if needed: Wer ist wichtig? Was ist das zentrale Problem? Warum könnte das Buch andere interessieren?

Notice → understand

A strong recommendation in six moves

  1. Hook: Start with a question, contrast or interesting idea.
  2. Book facts: Name title, author and genre.
  3. Plot snapshot: Explain the central situation, not the ending.
  4. Opinion: Say what works for you and why.
  5. Audience: Say who may enjoy the book.
  6. Closing line: End with a short recommendation or invitation.

Useful chunks: If you enjoy ..., this book may be for you. · What I liked most was ... because ... · The story becomes interesting when ... · I would recommend it to readers who ...

Reading: a model without spoilers

Fictional practice example — Signal at Midnight by Jamie Vale:

Would you answer a message from an unknown number at midnight? In this mystery story, fourteen-year-old Robin receives clues that seem to predict small events at school. Robin wants to find the sender before the messages become dangerous. I liked the fast pace and the way the clues slowly connect. Some scenes are tense, but the story is easy to follow. I recommend it to readers who enjoy mysteries, puzzles and brave main characters.

Notice: The text gives a hook, the main situation, an opinion, reasons and an audience. It does not tell the ending.

Try: Underline one sentence for each job: hook, plot snapshot, opinion, reason, audience.

Vocabulary in context

Word or phrase Meaning from context Your quick use
hook an opening that catches attention My hook is a question.
spoiler information that reveals an important surprise or ending No spoilers, please.
pace how fast or slow a story feels The pace is fast.
character a person in a story The main character is curious.
target audience the readers you want to reach The target audience likes fantasy.
recommend say that something is worth trying I recommend this book because ...

Mini-transfer: Choose two words and use them in one new sentence about your own book.

Pronunciation: clear before perfect

Say these chunks slowly, then naturally: I recommend this book ... · The main character ... · If you enjoy mysteries ... · What I liked most ...

Focus on key words, not on sounding like a native speaker. Make your meaning clear. Record yourself only if you want to, and keep recordings private unless you have agreed to share them.

Quick check: Can a partner understand your title, genre, main idea and recommendation after one listen?

Try → use

Listening and viewing

Fehler beim Erstellen des Vorschaubildes:

Use the video as a listening source, not as a text to copy. Watch a short section once without pausing. Then watch again and note:

  1. one idea about what a review should include
  2. one idea about what a review should avoid
  3. one useful English phrase or keyword

Hint: Listen for repeated words and headings. You do not need to understand every word.

German help if needed: Achte auf Schlüsselwörter. Notiere Sinn, nicht ganze Sätze.

Language focus: make your opinion useful

Use language that helps your listener understand your judgement.

Opinion + reason: I enjoyed the book because the characters felt believable.

Contrast: The beginning is slow, but the mystery becomes stronger.

Audience: I would recommend it to readers who like adventure stories.

Past event: Use the simple past for one selected event: The main character found a strange map.

E-level outlook — past perfect, controlled: By the time Robin reached the station, the train had left. Use this only when you really need to show that one past event happened before another.

Do not force advanced grammar. Clear communication comes first.

Speaking: 45–60 second recommendation

Prepare five notes, not a full script: hook – facts – plot snapshot – opinion – audience.

Speak to a partner. Your partner gives direct feedback:

  1. One strength: Your hook was clear.
  2. One next step: Add one reason for your opinion.
  3. One check: Did I hear a spoiler?

Then speak again and improve one thing.

Writing: 80–120 words

Write a short recommendation in your own words. Include:

  1. a hook
  2. title, author and genre
  3. a spoiler-free plot snapshot
  4. your opinion with at least two reasons
  5. a target audience
  6. a final recommendation

Challenge: Add however or although once if it helps your meaning.

Feedback code: H = hook, P = plot, O = opinion, R = reason, A = audience, S = spoiler risk. A partner may mark only the code in the margin. You decide how to improve the text.

Optional mediation

A German-speaking classmate asks: Für wen ist das Buch geeignet und warum? Give a short German summary of your English recommendation in three or four points. Do not translate sentence by sentence. Keep the main message.

Communicate → feedback → improve

Create your product

Choose one product.

A. Book recommendation: 80–120 written words or a 60–90 second mini-presentation.

B. Audio recommendation: 45–60 seconds. Clear voice, no music needed.

C. Book trailer: 30–60 seconds. Use a storyboard and a few short text cards or a voice-over. Tease the mood and central problem, but keep major twists secret.

Simple trailer plan: Scene 1 = hook · Scene 2 = book and genre · Scene 3 = central problem · Scene 4 = your opinion · Scene 5 = audience and closing line.

Fehler beim Erstellen des Vorschaubildes:

Use your own media or clearly reusable media, for example files from Wikimedia Commons. Check the licence and attribution requirements. Do not upload book pages, long readings, copyrighted music or cover art unless you have the necessary rights. A safe option is to show the title and author as text and use your own or freely licensed visuals.

Privacy: Use fictional profiles. Do not include private social-media data, school addresses, phone numbers or other personal information. Recording is voluntary. Keep recordings private unless everyone involved has agreed to sharing.

AI use: If your school allows AI, use it only to give feedback on a draft you wrote yourself. Check the level and every suggestion. Do not let AI replace your own text, and do not upload private recordings or personal data to external AI services.

Book trailer viewing task

Watch one short section about planning or voice-over. Then answer in English:

  1. Which step could help your own trailer?
  2. Which step is unnecessary for a simple school trailer?
  3. What would you change to keep your trailer short and spoiler-free?

Mini-transfer: Improve one storyboard frame after watching.

Self-check: Can do

Check your product.

  1. ☐ I named the book, author and genre.
  2. ☐ I used a clear hook.
  3. ☐ I kept the plot short and spoiler-free.
  4. ☐ I gave reasons for my opinion.
  5. ☐ I named a target audience.
  6. ☐ My English is understandable and mostly accurate.
  7. ☐ My media choices are legal and privacy-safe.
  8. ☐ I used feedback to improve one part.

If you cannot tick one box yet, revise only that part first.
