Writing helps you share ideas with other people. In this aiMOOC, you write short texts that are clear and easy to understand. You first try in English. If you need help, use a hint, open the German help, look at an example and only then compare with a possible solution.

Media start: Look at the picture for 20 seconds. What could you write in a notebook? Say or write three English words.

Try these without help first.

Write one friendly email greeting.

Notice: The email has a greeting, a reason for writing, information, one question and a friendly ending.

Watch selectively: Use only a short part about email structure and greetings. You do not need the business language in the rest of the video.

Understand: words in context

Mini task: Choose three words from the table and write one new sentence for each.

Practise: writing about the past

You can use the simple past to tell what happened in a finished past situation.

Useful verbs: visited – played – watched – went – saw – had – liked – made

Listen for meaning first. Then notice a few past forms.

Examples:

Yesterday I visited my aunt.
We went to the park.
I saw a funny dog.
I didn't like the rain.
Did you play football?

Accuracy focus: After did or didn't, use the basic verb form: Did you go? – I didn't go.

Pronunciation: clear past endings

You do not need a perfect accent. Your goal is to be easy to understand.

watched ends with a short /t/ sound.
played ends with a /d/ sound.
visited has an extra syllable before the final sound.

Say each word slowly once. Then use it in a short sentence.

Read: a small story

The lost key

Last Saturday, Leo found a key near the sports hall. First, he asked his friends. Then they looked for the owner. After that, a teacher recognised the key ring. Finally, the key went back to Mia. Leo felt happy because he could help.

Check your understanding:

Where did Leo find the key?
What did he do first?
Who recognised the key ring?
Why did Leo feel happy?

Hint: Find the sentence that contains the same key word as the question.

After watching: Say the three big parts of a story: beginning – middle – ending.

Speak before you write

Work with a partner if possible.

Tell a 30-second story about a real or invented weekend moment.
Your partner asks one follow-up question: Where? Who with? Why? What happened next?
Tell the story again and add the answer.

Optional audio: You may record your voice privately for yourself. Recording is voluntary. Do not upload it unless your teacher has clearly asked for it and your class has an agreed safe place.

Use: your short writing task

Task: Write 6–8 connected sentences about a real or invented past experience.

Try English first.

Write without opening the help.

Hint: Answer these questions: Where were you? Who was with you? What happened first? What happened next? How did you feel? Why?

Deutsch-Hilfe: Schreibe über ein echtes oder erfundenes Erlebnis. Nutze einfache Sätze und verbinde einige davon mit and, but, because, then oder finally.

Example: Last Sunday, I went to the lake with my brother. First, we walked around the water. Then we ate sandwiches. I saw a small boat and took a photo. It started to rain, but we laughed. Finally, we went home. I was tired but happy.

Possible solution: On Saturday, I visited a sports centre with my friend Kim. First, we played table tennis. Then we watched a basketball game. I liked the game because it was exciting. After that, we bought juice. Finally, we walked home. I felt happy because we had a good afternoon.

Do not copy the solution word for word. Use your own ideas.

Describe a picture

Look again at one of the pictures on this page.

Write 4–6 sentences.

Useful starts: I can see ... / There is ... / There are ... / The ... is ... / I think ... because ...

Focus: Describe what you can actually see. Do not guess people's culture, nationality, family or personality from a picture.

A short personal email

Write an email of about 60–80 words to the fictional person Alex Green. Tell Alex about one past event and ask one question.

Try English first.

Hint: Subject → greeting → reason → past event → feeling or reason → question → ending.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Nutze nur erfundene Kontaktdaten und Namen. Du brauchst eine freundliche Anrede, wenige zusammenhängende Sätze, eine Frage und einen Abschluss.

Example opening: Hi Alex, How are you? I want to tell you about my Saturday.

Sprachmittlung: pass on the key message

Read the German note and tell an English-speaking friend the important information in 2–3 English sentences.

Notiz: Treffpunkt morgen um 15 Uhr vor der Bibliothek. Bring bitte Dein Heft mit. Falls Du später kommst, sag kurz Bescheid.

Hint: You do not need to translate every word. Give the time, place, object and action.

Possible solution: Let's meet tomorrow at 3 pm in front of the library. Please bring your notebook. Tell me if you are late.

Feedback: make your text clearer

Use this short check.

Reader: Is it clear who the text is for?
Order: Can the reader follow what happened?
Connectors: Did you use words such as and, but, because, then or finally?
Past verbs: Are the important finished actions in a suitable past form?
Basics: Did you check capitals, full stops and key spellings?

Give a partner two helpful positives and one next step. Be specific and kind.

Example: Your order is clear. I like your question at the end. Next, check the past form of go.

Use again: revise one paragraph

Choose one paragraph from your text. Improve at least two things after feedback.

Before: I went to the park. I saw Max. We played. It was fun.

After: I went to the park and saw Max. Then we played basketball. It was fun because our game was very close.

Notice: The second version gives clearer links and more useful detail.

Safe and independent writing

Use fictional names and data in practice tasks.
Keep optional recordings private unless your teacher gives a clear safe classroom instruction.
Do not upload personal work to an external service without permission.
If an AI tool is allowed, check every suggestion and write the final text in your own words.
Never add personal information just because a tool asks for it.
