E6 M - Everyday life in Britain and Germany

Mini-description: Compare selected examples from school, free time, food and homes. We look at people and situations, not at whole cultures. The two students below are fictional.

Level: English as first foreign language, Klasse 6, M-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

Look first. What can you see? Say three things in English. Then read the caption: this photo is one example of school uniforms in London. It does not show what every school in Britain is like.

Media warm-up: Watch only if your teacher allows external media. Note three daily-routine words. You do not need an account and you should not post personal information.

I can ...

  1. I can describe a short school day and free-time routine.
  2. I can compare two examples with both, but, also and different.
  3. I can understand a short dialogue, picture and audio word.
  4. I can ask follow-up questions such as What about you? and When do you ...?
  5. I can write a short email about my everyday life.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Du vergleichst konkrete Beispiele. Sage nicht: „In Britain people always ...“ oder „Germans are ...“. Besser: „At Sam's school ...“, „In Mina's family ...“ oder „In this example ...“.

Quick check: What do you already know?

Without a dictionary, finish the sentences:

  1. At school I usually ...
  2. After school I ...
  3. For lunch I often ...
  4. At home there is / there are ...

Pair check: Ask one follow-up question: When?, Where?, With whom? or What about you?

Notice: two everyday lives

Meet Sam in Bristol and Mina in Freiburg. Their data are fictional.

Sam Mina
Sam's school starts at 8:30. His school asks pupils to wear a uniform. He sometimes eats pasta in the school canteen. Mina's school starts at 7:50. Her school does not use a school uniform. She often brings a packed snack and sometimes eats at school.
On Tuesdays Sam goes to a skate park with two friends. On Wednesdays Mina plays handball at a sports club.
Sam lives with his family in a terraced house. Mina lives with her family in a flat.

Notice: The picture shows terraced houses in Bath. It is one housing type, not “the British home”.

Notice: This is one classroom example from Germany. Classrooms can look very different.

Tiny dialogue

Sam: Our first lesson starts at half past eight. What about you? Mina: Mine starts earlier, at ten to eight. Do you have lunch at school? Sam: Sometimes. I like pasta, but I also take a sandwich. Mina: I often take fruit and a bread roll. After school I have handball on Wednesday. Sam: Cool. I go to the skate park on Tuesday.

Think: Find two similarities and two differences. Use both, but or also.

Understand: words in context

Word Meaning from the context Your mini-example
school uniform clothes a school asks pupils to wear Our school ...
canteen a place at school where you can get food In the canteen ...
packed lunch food you bring from home My packed lunch ...
terraced house a house joined to houses next to it This house ...
flat a home inside a larger building There is ...
leisure free time In my leisure time ...
neighbourhood the area around your home My neighbourhood ...

Listen to single words from Wikimedia Commons:

Pronunciation focus: Copy the rhythm, not a “perfect accent”. Speak clearly. Stress the important part of the word: LUNCH, LEIsure, NEIGHbourhood.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit. Sprich langsam genug, setze Wortakzente klar und wiederhole schwierige Wörter.

Picture input: food is an example, not a rule

Say what you see. Use: There is ..., There are ..., I can see .... Then add: This is one example of ...

Do not write: “British people eat fish and chips.” Better: “Fish and chips is a food you can find in the UK. Sam's family sometimes buys it.”

Practise

Task 1: School comparison

Complete orally:

  1. Sam starts school at ...
  2. Mina starts school at ...
  3. Sam's school uses ...
  4. Mina's school does not ...
  5. Both students ...

Try English first.

Hint: Use the dialogue and the table.

German help: Suche nur die Informationen zu Startzeit, Uniform und Gemeinsamkeiten. Übersetze nicht den ganzen Text.

Example: Sam starts later, but both students have lessons in the morning.

Solution idea: Sam starts at 8:30. Mina starts at 7:50. Sam's school uses a uniform. Mina's school does not. Both students go to school and have activities after school.

Task 2: Ask back

Work with a partner. Ask and answer:

  1. What time does your school start?
  2. What do you do after school?
  3. Do you eat at school?
  4. What is your home like?
  5. What about you?

Useful language: Really? – Me too. – That's different for me. – What about you?

Task 3: Read and choose evidence

Read:

On Friday, Sam gets home at four. He has a snack and messages a friend. At five they meet at the park. They do not play football that day; they practise skateboard tricks. In the evening Sam helps to make dinner.

Answer in short English:

  1. Where does Sam go?
  2. What does he do before the park?
  3. What does he do in the evening?
  4. Which sentence proves that he does not play football?

Deutsch-Hilfe: Markiere Schlüsselwörter. Für Frage 4 brauchst du einen Beleg aus dem Text, keine Vermutung.

Task 4: Short writing

Write an email of 6–8 connected sentences to Sam or Mina.

Use: Hi ..., My school starts ... After school I ... For lunch ... I live ... One thing is similar: ... One thing is different: ... What about you?

Accuracy focus: capital letters, full stops, he/she + -s when needed, and clear word order.

Optional mediation: Sprachmittlung

Your English-speaking exchange partner sees this German note:

Am Mittwoch endet der Unterricht schon um 12:55 Uhr. Die Theater-AG fällt aus. Der Bus fährt um 13:10 Uhr. Bitte bring dein Sportzeug für Donnerstag mit.

Explain the important information in simple English. Do not translate word for word.

Hint: Who? When? What changes? What should the person bring?

Example: On Wednesday school finishes earlier ...

Solution idea: On Wednesday school finishes at 12:55. There is no drama club. The bus leaves at 1:10. Bring your sports clothes for Thursday.

Use: mini presentation

Speak for about 45–60 seconds. Compare your real or invented everyday life with one of the fictional students.

  1. My school day ...
  2. After school ...
  3. One thing is similar ...
  4. One thing is different ...
  5. I think this example is interesting because ...

Privacy: You may invent details. Recording is voluntary and should stay private unless your teacher has a clear school-approved process. Do not upload recordings, names, addresses or photos without permission.

AI note: This course does not require an external AI tool. If an approved AI tool is used in class, do not enter personal data. Check its suggestions and write your final text in your own words.

Feedback

Partner feedback: choose two strengths and one next step.

Check Yes / not yet
I can understand the main message.
The comparison is about examples, not whole cultures.
The speaker uses linking words such as but, also or both.
The speaker asks or answers a follow-up question.
The speaker is clear enough to understand.

Use again: Improve one sentence and say the mini presentation again.

Can-do check

Rate yourself: green = yes, yellow = partly, red = not yet.

  1. I can describe school, free time, food and home in short connected English.
  2. I can compare two examples without making culture stereotypes.
  3. I can understand key words in a short dialogue or text.
  4. I can ask a follow-up question.
  5. I can improve my speaking or writing after feedback.

Next course: E6 M - My town and getting around
