Einleitung
In this aiMOOC, you practise short English questions and short answers. You do not need long grammar rules. You learn with mini-dialogues.
Try English first. If you need help, use the hint. Then use the German help. Look at the example. Check the solution last.
Important: Clear English is the goal. You do not need a perfect accent.
I can – Ziele
After this course, you can say:
- I can ask simple yes/no questions with am/is/are, have got, can, do/does and did.
- I can give a short answer: Yes, I am. / No, I can't. / Yes, I do.
- I can hear the helper word at the start of a question.
- I can ask a partner about school, hobbies and yesterday.
- I can write a short dialogue with questions and short answers.
Vorwissen-Check
Say the answer aloud. Do not worry about mistakes.
- Are you ready? → Yes, ...
- Can you swim? → No, ...
- Do you like music? → Yes, ...
- Did you play yesterday? → No, ...
Hint: Use the same helper word again.
German help: Das Hilfsverb aus der Frage kommt in der Kurzantwort wieder.
Example: Can you skate? – Yes, I can.
Solution: Yes, I am. / No, I can't. / Yes, I do. / No, I didn't.
Notice – Listen and spot

Listen once. Then listen again and point to the first word of every question.
A: Hi, Ben. Are you ready? B: Yes, I am. A: Have you got your sports bag? B: Yes, I have. A: Can you play basketball? B: No, I can't. A: Do you like football? B: Yes, I do. A: Did you play yesterday? B: No, I didn't.
Listening option: Your teacher or a partner can read the dialogue slowly two times. A private recording is optional. Do not upload it.
What do you notice? The short answer uses the helper word from the question.
Video task: Listen for do, does and did. Pause after one example. Say the question again.
Understand – Mini-dialogues
To be: am, is, are
A: Are you twelve? B: Yes, I am.
A: Is Mia in class 6? B: No, she isn't.
A: Are Tom and Leo ready? B: Yes, they are.
Hint: Start with am, is or are. Use it again in the answer.
German help: Bei to be brauchst Du kein do.
Example: Is he tired? – Yes, he is.
Solution idea: Question helper = answer helper.
Have got
A: Have you got a pencil? B: Yes, I have.
A: Has Sam got a bike? B: No, he hasn't.
Hint: Look for have or has.
German help: Bei have got beginnt die Frage mit have oder has.

Solution idea: Keep the answer short. Do not repeat got a dog.
Can

A: Can you play football? B: Yes, I can.

Do and does
A: Do you like art? B: Yes, I do.
A: Does Amir play tennis? B: No, he doesn't.
A: Does Mia like maths? B: Yes, she does.
Small trick: After does, use the short verb: Does Mia like ...?
Hint: I/you/we/they often go with do. He/she/it often goes with does.
German help: In der Kurzantwort steht wieder do oder does.
Example: Does Ben walk to school? – Yes, he does.
Did
A: Did you watch TV yesterday? B: Yes, I did.
A: Did Sara play football yesterday? B: No, she didn't.
Small trick: After did, use the short verb: Did Sara play ...?

German help: Nach did steht die Grundform des Verbs.
Example: Did they visit Tom? – Yes, they did.
Video task: Stop after a question. Give your own short answer.
Practise – Quick turns
Read the question. Answer in one short sentence.
- Are you at school? → Yes, ...
- Have you got a ruler? → No, ...
- Can you ride a bike? → Yes, ...
- Do you like English? → Yes, ...
- Does your friend like sport? → No, ...
- Did you study yesterday? → Yes, ...
Word bank: am · have · can · do · doesn't · did
Hint: Find the helper word first.
German help: Suche zuerst das Hilfsverb am Anfang der Frage.
Example: Do you like comics? – Yes, I do.
Solutions: Yes, I am. / No, I haven't. / Yes, I can. / Yes, I do. / No, he or she doesn't. / Yes, I did.
Pronunciation – Say it clearly
Speak in short chunks.
Are you READY? – YES, I am. Can you SWIM? – NO, I can't. Do you like MUSIC? – YES, I do. Did you PLAY? – NO, I didn't.
Tip: Make the important word clear. Do not speak too fast. A clear answer is more important than sounding like a native speaker.
Private practice: You may record yourself on a school device and listen once. Delete the recording afterwards if you want. No upload is needed.
Use – Speak
Work with a partner. Ask five questions. Use one question from each group.
Sentence starters:
- Are you ...?
- Have you got ...?
- Can you ...?
- Do you ...?
- Did you ... yesterday?
Answer bank: Yes, I am. / No, I'm not. / Yes, I have. / No, I haven't. / Yes, I can. / No, I can't. / Yes, I do. / No, I don't. / Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.
Rule: Use only information you want to share. You may invent harmless details for practice.
Read – A short chat

Lena: Hi, Jay. Are you ready for PE? Jay: Yes, I am. Lena: Have you got your trainers? Jay: Yes, I have. Lena: Can you play basketball? Jay: No, I can't. But I can play football. Lena: Do you play in a team? Jay: Yes, I do. Lena: Did you train yesterday? Jay: No, I didn't.
Check:
- Is Jay ready for PE?
- Has Jay got his trainers?
- Can Jay play basketball?
- Does Jay play in a team?
- Did Jay train yesterday?
Hint: Find the short answers in the chat.
German help: Suche die Kurzantwort direkt nach jeder Frage.
Solution: Yes. Yes. No. Yes. No.
Write – A mini chat
Write six lines. Use at least three different question starters.
Starter:
A: Hi! Are you ready? B: Yes, I am. A: Have you got ...? B: ... A: Can you ...? B: ...
Word bank: school bag · bike · pet · football · music · comics · yesterday · play · like · watch
German help: Schreibe kurze Fragen und kurze Antworten. Du darfst fiktive Angaben nutzen.
Sprachmittlung – Help a friend
Your German-speaking friend asks: Was bedeutet „Can you help me? – Yes, I can.“?
Try English first: Explain it with very easy English.
Hint: can = ability or possibility.
German help: Erkläre nur die Bedeutung, nicht jedes Wort einzeln.
Example: The person asks for help. The answer is yes.
Possible solution: Jemand fragt: Kannst du mir helfen? Die andere Person sagt kurz: Ja.
Feedback – Fix only the important things
Check three things:
- Does the question start with the right helper word?
- Does the short answer use the same helper word?
- After does or did, is the main verb short: like, play, watch?
Peer feedback: Say one good thing first. Then give one small tip.
Example: Good short answer. Check the verb after did.
Use again – One more round
Ask the same partner new questions.
A: Are you hungry? B: No, I'm not.
A: Have you got a snack? B: Yes, I have.
A: Can you cook? B: A little. Yes, I can.
A: Do you like pasta? B: Yes, I do.
A: Did you cook yesterday? B: No, I didn't.
Now change one word in every question and speak again.
