You can read more English than you think. Look for names, places, times and key words first. You do not need to understand every word.

Help ladder:

1. Try English first: Read again and mark key words.
2. Hint: Look at the title, picture, names, times and repeated words.

4. Example: “Meet me at 4:15 at the library.” → time: 4:15, place: library.

Notice: What kind of text is it?

Different texts look different. A message is often very short. An email can have a subject line. A story has people and events. An information text gives facts. An everyday text can be a sign, menu or timetable.

Understand: Find the important information

Use the 4 key questions:

1. Who? Who is in the text?
2. Where? What place is important?
3. When? What day or time is important?
4. What? What happens or what must someone do?

You often do not need more.

Text 3: Short story

The missing lunch

Ben opened his school bag. His lunch box was not there. He looked under the desk. Then he saw a note from Dad: “Your lunch is in the front pocket.” Ben looked again. He found the lunch and smiled.

Main idea: Ben cannot find his lunch at first. Then a note helps him.

Try English first: Why does Ben smile?

Hint: Read the last two sentences.

Do not learn long word lists. Learn words inside useful sentences.

Pronunciation and speaking

Say these short chunks slowly:

at the library – on Saturday – at ten o’clock – bring water

Read for meaning. Make a small pause at full stops. Stress the important word.

Partner task: One person reads a message. The other person says the place and time.

Sentence starters: “The place is …” / “The time is …” / “The message says …”

Park notice

Welcome to Green Park.
Bikes: use the cycle path.
Dogs: keep them with you.
Playground closes at 18:00.

Task: Find one rule and one time.

Hint: A rule tells you what to do.

Feedback: Check your reading

After a task, ask:

1. Did I find the text type?
2. Did I find key words?
3. Did I answer the exact question?
4. Did I guess from one word, or did I check the whole sentence?

If an answer is wrong, read the small part again. Then try once more.
