Grammar for communication: Simple past

Use the simple past for finished actions in the past.

Many regular verbs: play → played, watch → watched, visit → visited

Some common verbs change: go → went, have → had, meet → met, eat → ate, ride → rode

You do not need a long rule list. Ask yourself: Did this action finish in the past? Then choose a past form you know.

Story order helps your listener: first → then → after that → finally

Practise: Build the story

Put these ideas into a clear spoken story:

Saturday morning – breakfast – bike ride – park – friend – picnic – film – Sunday – grandma – board game

Try English first: Speak for about 30 seconds.

Hint: Start with Last Saturday ... and use two or more sequence words.

German help: Ordne zuerst vier bis sechs Ereignisse. Danach formulierst Du einfache Sätze. Perfekte Details sind weniger wichtig als eine klare Reihenfolge.

Example: Last Saturday, I got up early. First, I had breakfast. Then, I rode my bike to the park.

Solution idea: There is no single correct story. Check: past forms, clear order, understandable sentences.

For regular past forms, the ending can sound different. Notice the ending in played, watched and visited. Your goal is clear speech, not accent-free speech.

Transfer: Tell the weekend from the brother's point of view. You may invent two details.

Explain the most important information in two short German sentences. Do not translate every sentence. Choose the key information.

Hint: Where was Sam? Who did he meet? What did they do?

Write 6–8 connected sentences about a real or fictional weekend.
