E6 E - Record, compare and improve
E6 E - Record, compare and improve

Mini-description: Record a short speaking task, compare it with a model and improve one or two things that make you easier to understand.
Target group: English as a first foreign language, Year 6, Baden-Württemberg, E6-E.
Important: Your recording is optional and private. Do not upload it. You can also speak live to a partner or practise quietly without saving anything.
Media start: Listen, notice, compare
Listen to two short recordings of the same word.
Think: Do they sound exactly the same? No. Can both be clear? Yes.
Key idea: You do not need an accent-free voice. You need understandable English.

Optional video: Watch a short part and notice how sounds, stress and mouth movement can support clear speech.
I can ...
| I can ... | Check |
|---|---|
| record or perform a short English speaking task | □ |
| compare my speaking with a model | □ |
| notice one or two points that affect clarity | □ |

Quick check: What do you already know?
Try English first.
- Say two sentences about a hobby, a weekend activity or a school day.
- Mark one word in each sentence that should sound important.
- Say the sentences again with a short pause between ideas.
Hint: Important words are often a little stronger. Short pauses can help the listener.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Betone wichtige Wörter etwas stärker und trenne Sinnabschnitte durch kleine Pausen.
Your learning path
| Step | What you do |
|---|---|
| Notice | Listen and mark what sounds clear. |
| Understand | Learn what stress, pauses and pace can do. |
| Practise | Try short parts first. |
| Use | Give a 30–45 second speaking performance. |
| Feedback | Compare with a model and a simple checklist. |
| Use again | Improve one or two points and speak again. |
Input: A short model

Read the model. Then ask a teacher, partner or your own inner reading voice to model it clearly.
Model text:
Hi, I'm Sam. On Saturdays, I usually play basketball with my cousin. Last Saturday, we played in the park. It was windy, but we had fun. My favourite part was the final game because everyone cheered. Next time, I want to speak more slowly and make my key words clear.
All names and details in this course are fictional.
Notice: What makes the model clear?
Look at these chunks:
On SATurdays / I usually play BASKETball / with my COUsin.
Last Saturday / we played in the PARK.
Next time / I want to speak more SLOWly / and make my key words CLEAR.
You do not have to copy every sound. Focus on meaning.
Vocabulary in context
| Word | Meaning in this course | Example |
|---|---|---|
| record | save your voice | I record 30 seconds. |
| compare | look or listen for similarities and differences | I compare my version with the model. |
| stress | make an important syllable or word stronger | I stress the key word. |
| pause | stop very briefly | I pause between two ideas. |
| pace | how fast or slow you speak | My pace is calm. |
| clarity | how easy your speech is to understand | Clear key words improve clarity. |
| feedback | information that helps you improve | My partner gives useful feedback. |
Understand: Clarity before accent
Good speaking is not about sounding exactly like one model speaker. A clear message is more important than copying an accent.
For this task, focus on:
- key words: make important words easy to hear
- pauses: give the listener time to follow
- pace: do not rush
- clear words: finish important words carefully
The CEFR also gives more weight to intelligibility than to sounding like a native speaker. See the Council of Europe information on phonological competence.
Help ladder
| Step | Help |
|---|---|
| Try English first | Say your idea with words you know. |
| Hint | Use short chunks and one key word in each chunk. |
| German help | Teile deinen Satz in kleine Sinnabschnitte und betone wichtige Wörter. |
| Example | I usually play FOOTball / with my FRIENDS. |
| Solution | Speak the sentence once slowly, then once at a natural pace. |
Practise
Pronunciation: Stress, pauses and pace

Say each line twice.
Version A: I usually play basketball with my cousin.
Version B: I usually play BASKETball / with my COUsin.
Which version is easier to follow?
Now try:
My favourite day is SATurday / because I meet my FRIENDS.
Last weekend / we went to the PARK / and played a GAME.
Do not make every word strong. Choose the words that carry the main meaning.
Listening and reading
Read this short text.
Maya records a 35-second talk. Her partner understands almost everything, but one sentence is too fast. An automatic tool gives Maya 71 out of 100. Maya does not try to reach 100. She listens again, slows down one sentence and makes two key words clearer. Her partner understands the second version more easily.
Question: What helped Maya most?
Answer: She used human understanding and a clear goal instead of chasing a score.
Automatic pronunciation scores: Use with care
An automatic score can be an extra hint, but it is not the final judge of your English. A tool may react to microphone quality, background noise, speaking style or an accent it knows less well.
Use this rule:
Human understanding first → tool hint second → your own decision last.
Never upload a private recording to an external service unless your school and you have clearly chosen to use that service. In this course, no external AI access is needed.
Use: Your first speaking version
Choose one topic:
- a hobby you enjoy
- a good school day
- a weekend activity
- a game, book or place you like
Speak for about 30–45 seconds.
Use this simple plan:
Start: Hi. Today I want to talk about ...
Middle: I usually ... / Last ... / My favourite part is ...
End: That's why I like it. / Next time, I want to ...
Recording is optional. You can speak live to a partner instead.
Short writing output
Write a speaking plan with four to six sentences. Do not write a long script if you can speak from keywords.
Your plan:
Topic: __________
Key word 1: __________
Key word 2: __________
Useful ending: __________
Feedback: Compare with a model
Compare your first version with the model and with this checklist.
| Check | Yes / not yet |
|---|---|
| My main message is easy to understand. | |
| I make some key words clear. | |
| I use short pauses between ideas. | |
| My pace is not too fast. | |
| I can improve one or two things. |
Choose only one or two targets. Example:
Target 1: slower pace in the middle.
Target 2: stronger key words.
Do not try to fix everything at once.
Use again: Your improved version
Speak the same task again.
Afterwards, finish these sentences:
My second version is clearer because ...
One thing I still want to practise is ...
The feedback that helped me most was ...
