E6 E - Cultural misunderstandings – Kleine Missverständnisse lösen

Mini description: Small misunderstandings can happen when people have different habits, expectations or ways of speaking. You learn to notice a problem, ask a friendly question, listen and react with respect.

Important: A person is never “a whole culture”. People from the same place can have different habits. Do not guess from nationality, clothes, name or accent. Ask politely.

Media start – 60 seconds: Look at the photo. Then watch only a short part of the video if your teacher chooses it. What can body language show? What can it not tell you for sure?

I can ...

I can ... Check
notice a small misunderstanding ☐
ask what another person means ☐
use respectful phrases ☐
retell a short situation ☐
write a short solution ☐

Before you start: Quick check

Try English first. Read the three lines. Which answer sounds most respectful?

A: “You are late. That is rude.” B: “I expected us at three. Did you mean half past three?” C: “People from your country are always late.”

Hint: One answer asks for information instead of judging the person.

German help: Suche die Antwort, die nachfragt und kein Klischee benutzt.

Solution: B

Notice: What happened?

Fictional situation 1 – The greeting

Mina: “Hi, Leo!” Leo smiles and waves. Mina puts out her hand. Leo does not take it. Mina thinks: “Is he unfriendly?” Leo thinks: “Oh, I did not know she wanted a handshake.”

Notice: No one wanted to be rude. They expected different greetings.

Useful line: “Oh, do you prefer a wave or a handshake?”

Listen: You can hear two speakers say “hello”. Different voices and accents are normal. Your goal is clear speech, not a perfect accent.

Word focus in context

Word / phrase Simple meaning Example
misunderstanding people understand something differently “It was a misunderstanding.”
expect think something will happen “I expected a wave.”
habit something you often do “That is my usual habit.”
gesture a movement with your hands or body “The wave is a friendly gesture.”
personal space the distance that feels comfortable “Can I give you more space?”
clarify make the meaning clear “Can I clarify that?”
respectful kind and fair “That was a respectful answer.”

Understand: Three small misunderstandings

Situation A – The queue

Jay: “Are you waiting here?” Nia: “Yes, but you can go first.” Jay: “Oh! I thought this was the end of the queue.” Nia: “No problem. It is a bit confusing.”

Good move: Ask before you assume.

Situation B – Lunch

Sam offers Aylin a snack. Aylin: “No, thank you.” Sam: “You don’t like my food?” Aylin: “It looks nice. I’m just not hungry.” Sam: “Oh, thanks for telling me.”

Good move: A “no” can have many reasons. Do not invent a reason.

Situation C – Personal space

Two pupils talk after class. One steps closer to hear better. The other takes one step back.

Pupil 1: “Sorry, am I too close?” Pupil 2: “A little, yes. Thanks for asking.” Pupil 1: “Of course.”

Good move: Notice the other person and ask.

Practise: A simple repair strategy

Notice → Ask → Listen → Clarify → Continue

Step Useful English
Notice “I think we understood this differently.”
Ask “What did you mean?”
Listen “Okay, I see.”
Clarify “I meant ...”
Continue “Thanks. Let’s try again.”

Pronunciation focus: Say these chunks slowly, then at normal speed: “Excuse me.” – “What did you mean?” – “I meant ...” – “Thanks for telling me.”

Feedback tip: Speak clearly. A natural accent is fine. Your partner should understand you.

Try English first → Hint → German help → Example → Solution

Task: Complete the repair.

Alex: “Why didn’t you answer me?” Robin: “Sorry, I did not hear you.” Alex: “_____?” Robin: “I was listening to the teacher.”

Hint: Ask Robin to explain.

German help: Frage höflich nach: „Was meinst du?“

Example: “Can you say that again?”

Solution: “What do you mean?” or “Can you explain?”

Use: Speaking

Pair work: Choose one fictional situation: greeting, queue, lunch, personal space or meeting time. Make a short dialogue with a small misunderstanding and a respectful repair.

Your dialogue should include: a misunderstanding, one question, one clarification and a friendly ending.

Useful language: “I thought ...” · “Did you mean ...?” · “Sorry, I meant ...” · “Thanks for telling me.” · “That’s okay.”

German help: Zeigt zuerst das Missverständnis. Fragt dann nach, erklärt kurz und beendet das Gespräch freundlich.

Optional recording: You may record your dialogue privately for practice. Recording is voluntary. Do not upload it unless your teacher and your school rules clearly allow this.

Read

The club meeting

On Tuesday, four pupils meet for the school’s international club. The message says: “Meet near the library after lunch.” Ella waits inside the library. Ben waits outside. Rani goes to the small reading room. Mo stays in the corridor. After ten minutes, they message each other.

Ella: “Where are you?” Ben: “Outside the library.” Rani: “I thought ‘near the library’ meant the reading room.” Mo: “I’m in the corridor. We all understood the message differently.”

They meet at the door and laugh. Then they change the next message to: “Meet at the main library door at 1:25.”

Think: The problem was not a “bad culture”. The message was not clear enough.

Reading check

  1. Explain: Why did the pupils wait in different places?
  2. Improve: Write a clearer meeting message.
  3. Transfer: What could Ella say if she feels annoyed but wants to stay respectful?

Short writing

Write 60–80 words. Create a fictional school situation with a small misunderstanding. Show how two people solve it respectfully.

You can use: At first ... / I thought ... / Then ... / “What did you mean?” / In the end ...

Hint: Use 4 parts: situation → misunderstanding → question → solution.

German help: Schreibe keine Kulturregel. Beschreibe nur diese fiktive Situation und wie die Personen nachfragen.

Example start: “At first, Kim thought the group wanted to meet at 2:00 ...”

Mediation mini-task

Your new classmate understands only simple English. A German notice says: “Treffpunkt ist nach der großen Pause direkt vor der Mensa. Bitte wartet dort, bis alle da sind.”

Task: Explain the important information in simple English. Do not translate every word.

Hint: Say place + time + what to do.

Solution example: “Meet in front of the cafeteria after the big break. Wait there for the group.”

Media lab: Look, listen, think

Image task: What respectful listening behaviours can you see or imagine? Give two possibilities. Do not claim that a photo tells you a person’s culture.

Optional video task: Listen for polite phrases such as “please”, “thank you”, “sorry” or “excuse me”. Which phrases could help in a misunderstanding?

Media safety: Use school-approved access. No account, upload or personal data is needed for the learning task.

Feedback

After a dialogue or text, use two stars and one next step:

Check Feedback
The misunderstanding is clear. ⭐
The people ask instead of judging. ⭐
Next step “Add one clearer question.” / “Make the ending friendlier.” / “Explain the situation more clearly.”

AI note: If your school allows AI support, check every suggestion, change it into your own words and make sure it fits the fictional situation. Do not send personal data. Your own clear English is the goal.

Use again

Take your first speaking or writing task. Improve one point after feedback. Then use the repair strategy again in a new situation.

Challenge: Retell your partner’s fictional situation in 4–5 sentences without reading their text.

Can-do check

Now I can ... yes almost not yet
notice a small misunderstanding ☐ ☐ ☐
ask a respectful question ☐ ☐ ☐
explain what I meant ☐ ☐ ☐
avoid quick stereotypes ☐ ☐ ☐
use feedback and try again ☐ ☐ ☐

Next course: E6 E – Perspectives and respectful communication
