E10 M - My English portfolio Klasse 10

Mini-description: Collect selected presentations, discussions, applications, CV tasks, mediation, reports, literary responses, current-events work and exam simulations. Then reflect on how your English has developed.

Target group: Klasse 10, M-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg. The course works at a B1-oriented level: longer simple authentic texts, natural standard audio, more information, fewer hints and increasing independence.

Learning path: English first → understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer.

Start task: Watch the opening of the presentation video. Write down three useful presentation phrases. Then say a 30-second opening for a topic you know well. Do not translate a German script first.

Safe and fair portfolio work

Use only fictional profiles for applications and CVs. Never publish real addresses, phone numbers or private data. Audio or video recordings are voluntary and may stay private. No upload is required.

AI support is optional. If you use it, keep your own first draft, mark the support you used, check factual claims and sources, and revise in your own words. Do not send private recordings or personal data to external AI services.

Your goal is clear communication, not accent-free English. Describe cultures and people through evidence and context, not stereotypes.

I-can goals

I can ... Portfolio evidence
understand the main points and relevant details in B1-level listening and viewing listening notes and a short response
read longer simple authentic texts and identify purpose, evidence and viewpoint reading annotation or source card
present a topic clearly and react to follow-up questions presentation plan or private recording
discuss, negotiate and reach a workable result discussion notes and reflection
write formal and informal emails for a clear purpose revised email
create a fictional application and concise CV application pack
mediate meaning for a specific person and situation mediation task
write reports, articles, opinions and literary responses with source or text reference selected written pieces
use feedback to identify recurring errors and improve a second version draft, feedback and revision
transfer these skills to exam-style tasks timed simulation and reflection

Quick start: What is already in your toolbox?

Choose one English text from this school year. In two minutes, mark one strong sentence, one repeated problem and one place where you used a useful strategy.

Then complete in English:

  1. Strength: One thing I already do well is ...
  2. Challenge: One thing I still find difficult is ...
  3. Strategy: When I get stuck, I usually ...
  4. Goal: By the end of this portfolio, I want to ...

Portfolio map

Build a small but meaningful collection. Quality and reflection matter more than quantity.

Portfolio piece Main skill Keep as evidence
Presentation structure, free speaking, spontaneous reaction cue card, slide or reflection
Discussion interaction, negotiation, compromise argument map and partner feedback
Fictional application formal register and purpose first draft and revised version
Fictional CV concise factual writing one-page CV
Mediation selecting and transferring relevant meaning source notes and mediated response
Report or article factual structure or audience-focused writing final text plus source note
Literary response point, evidence, explanation paragraph or short response
Current-events work source checking and viewpoint analysis dated source card
Exam simulation timing, task control and strategy result plus error analysis

Listening and Viewing

Presentation language

Listen once for the main idea. Listen again for structure.

Focus:

  1. Opening: introduce the topic and purpose
  2. Signposting: guide the listener through your points
  3. Closing: summarise and invite questions

Response task: Give a one-minute presentation opening. Use only keywords.

Application and interview language

Listen for phrases that show strengths through examples. Then answer one fictional interview question: Tell me about a situation where you worked well with others.

Keep the profile fictional. A useful answer gives a situation, an action and a result.

CV listening and vocabulary

Datei:Resume.pdf

After viewing, note three qualities of a useful CV. Then compare them with your fictional CV.

Pronunciation for communication

Aim for intelligibility. Practise:

  1. Word stress: stress the important syllable in longer words
  2. Sentence stress: stress key information, not every word
  3. Thought groups: pause at meaningful points
  4. Final sounds: make endings clear when they carry meaning
  5. Repair strategies: repeat, rephrase or slow down when needed

Micro-practice: Shadow 20 seconds of one video. Then speak the same idea in your own words. Do not imitate an accent; copy useful rhythm and clarity.

Reading and current-events work

Use a recent English-language source selected by your teacher or class. Record the date, author or organisation, title and source.

Read in three passes:

  1. Understand: What happened or what is the main issue?
  2. Analyse: Which statements are facts, explanations or opinions?
  3. Respond: What is one justified response or question?

Do not copy a full article into your portfolio. Use short notes and your own summary.

If a source includes political claims, separate factual reporting from attributed opinion and compare claims with reliable evidence.

Source check

Before using information, ask:

Check Question
Author Who produced this information?
Date Is it current enough for my task?
Evidence What supports the main claim?
Purpose Is the source informing, persuading, selling or entertaining?
Cross-check Can an important claim be confirmed elsewhere?

Context vocabulary

Learn phrases through functions, not isolated lists.

Function Useful language
Presenting I'd like to focus on ... / The main point is ...
Adding evidence According to the source ... / This suggests that ...
Discussing I see your point, but ... / Another way to look at it is ...
Negotiating Could we agree on ...? / A possible compromise would be ...
Formal writing I am writing to apply for ... / I would be pleased to ...
Reporting The aim of this report is ... / The results show ...
Reflecting Compared with my first version ... / My next step is ...

Vocabulary rule: Keep new words with a phrase, example or situation. Do not learn long translation lists.

Speaking: present, discuss, react

Presentation

Use opening → two or three clear points → conclusion → questions.

Do not memorise a full script. Use a small cue card with keywords. Practise one unexpected follow-up question after each rehearsal.

Discussion and negotiation

Your aim is not to speak the most. Your aim is to build a useful conversation.

Try this pattern:

claim → reason → example → reaction → question → compromise

Useful moves:

  1. Agreeing: I agree with that because ...
  2. Partial agreement: I see your point, but ...
  3. Clarifying: Do you mean that ...?
  4. Inviting: What do you think about ...?
  5. Compromise: Could we combine both ideas?

Writing portfolio

Formal and informal email

Decide first: Who am I writing to? Why? What result do I want?

A formal email usually needs a clear subject, appropriate greeting, concise purpose, useful details and a polite ending. An informal message can sound more personal and relaxed.

Transfer task: Write the same basic message once to a friend and once to an internship contact. Change register, not the facts.

Fictional application and CV

Use a made-up applicant and a made-up organisation.

Application: connect your skills to the fictional role. Give short examples instead of empty claims.

CV: keep information concise, consistent and easy to scan.

Datei:Resume.pdf

Never use real addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers or private photos.

Report, article and opinion

Report: organise factual findings and give a clear conclusion or recommendation.

Article: engage the target reader and structure the main message clearly.

Opinion: state a position, support it with reasons and evidence, and address another view fairly.

Literary response

Use a simple analytical structure:

point → short evidence from the text → explanation → link to the question

Do not retell the whole plot. Explain how a detail supports your interpretation.

Mediation

Mediation is not word-for-word translation.

You transfer the information another person needs for a purpose.

Before speaking or writing, decide:

  1. Purpose: What does the other person need to know?
  2. Audience: What background knowledge do they have?
  3. Selection: Which information is relevant?
  4. Adaptation: Which details need explanation?
  5. Clarity: Can the message be understood without the original text?

Mini-task: A German school notice explains a change to a class trip. An English-speaking exchange student only needs time, meeting point, equipment and what to do if late. Mediate only these points.

Functional grammar

Grammar is a tool for meaning.

Situation Grammar focus
telling experience in an application past simple and present perfect
discussing options modals and conditionals
giving reasons and contrast linking words and complex sentences
reporting information passive forms and reporting verbs
describing plans and consequences future forms and conditionals
improving cohesion pronouns, reference words and paragraph links

Grammar repair: When you find an error, write the corrected sentence and one new sentence using the same structure.

Feedback → revise

Use a short feedback loop.

Step Question
Glow What already works for the reader or listener?
Grow What one change would make the message clearer?
Revise What exactly will I change?
Check Did the revision improve meaning, structure or accuracy?

Keep the first draft. A portfolio should show development, not only polished final products.

Error analysis

My recurring error Corrected example What I need to remember New example
... ... ... ...

Group errors by pattern: tense, word order, article, preposition, spelling, register, cohesion or unclear meaning.

Exam link: current official conditions

For the current school year 2026/27, Klasse 10 still uses the earlier BP2016 implementation; the revised V2 content becomes relevant for the Realschulabschlussprüfung from 2028/29.[3]

Important: Check the ministry documents again shortly before an exam simulation because official rules can change. School-specific organisation may also differ within the official framework.

Exam simulation routine

  1. Set-up: use the official time and only the permitted aids
  2. Do: work without outside help
  3. Check: mark where time, task understanding or language caused problems
  4. Repair: practise one problem type
  5. Repeat: run a shorter second simulation
