E10 G - Write an opinion text with supporting ideas

Mini-description: Write a short opinion text with a clear position, two reasons, examples, one simple counterpoint and a conclusion. This aiMOOC is for English as a first foreign language, Grade 10, G level, Baden-Württemberg. You work in a clear cycle: understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer.

Einleitung

Your task: You have an opinion. Now make it easy for another person to follow.

Practice target in this course: about 100–130 words. Use common vocabulary, short paragraphs and clear linking words. Your text does not need difficult language. It needs a clear message.

Safe learning: Use only fictional profiles or applications in related tasks. Audio or video recordings are voluntary and stay private unless you choose otherwise. Do not upload classmates' work without permission. If you use AI support elsewhere, keep your own text, check facts and sources, and do not send personal data to external AI services.

I can ...

  1. I can state my position in one clear sentence.
  2. I can support it with two simple reasons and examples.
  3. I can include a counterpoint with a short reply.
  4. I can end with a conclusion that matches my position.
  5. I can revise my text for clarity and a few important accuracy points.

Before you start: What do you already know?

Choose one everyday school topic, for example school uniforms, a homework-free afternoon or phones during breaks. Say or write three short lines:

  1. My opinion is ...
  2. One reason is ...
  3. For example, ...

Listening and Viewing

Watch the video first for the main idea. Do not stop after every sentence.

First viewing – understand: What is the purpose of an opinion paragraph?

Second viewing – notice: Write five keywords you hear about structure. Compare them with a partner.

Respond: Which part feels easiest for you: position, reason, example or conclusion? Give one short reason.

Viewing extension

The next video is an optional extension. It uses the longer form opinion essay. You do not need to copy the full essay structure. Look only for ideas you can transfer to a short text.

Viewing focus: Find one tip for an introduction, one for the main part and one for the conclusion.

Reading: A short model

Question: Should students have one homework-free afternoon each week?

Model text:

One homework-free afternoon each week is a good idea. First, students need time to rest and meet friends. For example, they can do sport or help at home without worrying about tasks for the next day. Second, a free afternoon can help students start the next school day with more energy. Some people say homework is important because practice helps us learn. That is true, but schools can plan practice on other days. In my opinion, one homework-free afternoon would not stop learning. It could make school life more balanced. Therefore, I think schools should try this idea.

Understand the model

  1. Find the writer's position.
  2. Underline two reasons.
  3. Circle one example.
  4. Mark the counterpoint with CP.
  5. Box the conclusion.

Analyse the structure

Part Simple job Useful language
Position Say what you think. I think ... / In my opinion, ...
Reason Explain why. First, ... / Another reason is ...
Example Make the reason concrete. For example, ...
Counterpoint Show another view. Some people say ... / However, ...
Conclusion Finish clearly. Therefore, ... / In conclusion, ...

Context vocabulary

Use words you really need. Do not try to use every word.

Word or phrase Use
opinion what you think
reason why you think it
example a concrete case
agree have the same opinion
disagree have a different opinion
important useful for a strong point
because gives a reason
however shows a contrast
therefore leads to a conclusion
in my opinion introduces your view

Pronunciation and speaking

Goal: Be easy to understand. Accent-free English is not the goal.

Practise these chunks slowly, then at normal speed:

  1. In my opinion, ...
  2. One reason is ...
  3. For example, ...
  4. Some people say ...
  5. However, I think ...
  6. Therefore, ...

Pair speaking: A says an opinion plus one reason. B asks Why? or Can you give an example? Then change roles. If you record yourself, recording is optional and private.

Functional grammar for this task

Focus on a few useful patterns.

Function Pattern Example
Give a reason statement + because + reason I support the idea because it saves time.
Add an example For example, + sentence For example, students can meet friends.
Show contrast Some people say ... but ... Some people say homework is necessary, but one free afternoon is possible.
Give advice or a position should + base verb Schools should try the idea.

Accuracy focus 1: Write a complete sentence with a subject and a verb.

Accuracy focus 2: After should, use the base form: should try, not should tries.

Accuracy focus 3: Use a comma after sentence starters such as For example, and However, when they start the sentence.

Writing scaffold

Topic for practice: Should schools have one homework-free afternoon each week?

Step Your notes
Position I think ...
Reason 1 First, ...
Example 1 For example, ...
Reason 2 Another reason is ...
Counterpoint + reply Some people say ... but ...
Conclusion Therefore, ...

Write: Turn your notes into a short text of about 100–130 words. Use short paragraphs if that helps you.

Help box

Use only as much help as you need.

  1. Position: I think ... / In my opinion, ...
  2. Reasons: First, ... / Another reason is ... / This is important because ...
  3. Examples: For example, ... / One example is ...
  4. Counterpoint: Some people say ... / However, ... / That is true, but ...
  5. Conclusion: Therefore, ... / In conclusion, ...

Feedback

Give feedback on the text, not on the person. Start with meaning and structure. Then check only a few language points.

Check Yes Almost Not yet
I can find the position. □ □ □
I can find two reasons. □ □ □
At least one reason has an example. □ □ □
There is a simple counterpoint. □ □ □
The conclusion matches the position. □ □ □

One useful feedback sentence: Your idea is clear because ... One place to improve is ...

Error analysis and revise

Correct the four sentences. Focus on the target, not on every possible style change.

  1. I think school should starts later.
  2. For example students can sleep longer.
  3. Some people says this is difficult, but I disagree.
  4. I support the idea because gives students more time.

Check: should start · For example, · people say · because it gives

Now revise your own text in two rounds:

  1. Round 1 – meaning: position, reasons, examples, counterpoint, conclusion.
  2. Round 2 – accuracy: complete sentences, should + base verb, commas after starters.

Keep your own wording. Do not replace the whole text with an AI-generated version.

Mediation mini-task

Your German-speaking class has the note: „Am Mittwoch gibt es keine Hausaufgaben für Donnerstag. Die Schule möchte mehr Zeit für AGs und Erholung schaffen.“

Tell an English-speaking exchange student only the key idea in one or two English sentences. Do not translate every word. Then add one sentence with your opinion.

Transfer

New topic: Should school start 30 minutes later?

Plan for two minutes. Then write 6–8 connected sentences with a position, two supporting ideas, one example, a simple counterpoint and a conclusion. You may use the help box, but try to use fewer starters than before.

Can-do check

I can ... Yes With help Not yet
