E10 G - Future perfect – Understand completed future actions

QR-Code

Einleitung

Future Perfect helps you understand actions that will be completed before or by a future point. In Klasse 10 auf G-Niveau steht hier vor allem das rezeptive Erkennen und Verstehen im Mittelpunkt.

Media start – watch and listen first. Do not try to translate every word. Listen for will have and time signals such as by, by then or by the time.

Mini-description: You learn to spot Future-Perfect forms in clear timelines and to understand that something will be finished by a future reference point. You do not need to master this tense freely in speaking or writing.

Bildungsplanbezug: E10 G, Baden-Württemberg

Im Bildungsplan Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 10, wird das future perfect auf G-Niveau ausdrücklich rezeptiv geführt. Der Kurs trainiert deshalb zuerst Hör-/Hörsehverstehen und Leseverstehen; produktive Mini-Schritte sind nur gestützt und dienen der Sicherung.

Offizieller Bildungsplan Baden-Württemberg – Klasse 10, Grammatik

Learning path

Step What you do
English first Meet the form in video, timelines and short texts.
understand Find the future point and the completed action.
respond Choose, match or answer with short phrases.
analyse Notice will have + past participle and time signals.
communicate Explain the meaning safely with models and support.
feedback Check meaning before form.
revise Correct one clear problem at a time.
transfer Use the idea in school, internship and planning contexts.

I-can-Ziele

  1. I can spot forms like will have finished in a short text or clear standard audio.
  2. I can find the future reference point, for example by Friday or by 6 pm.
  3. I can understand that the action is completed by that future point.
  4. I can distinguish will have finished from will finish and will be working when the context is clear.
  5. I can explain the meaning of a Future-Perfect sentence without translating every word.
  6. I can use a model sentence with support as an optional extension.

Vorwissen

You already know useful building blocks:

You may know Example Why it helps
will + verb I will finish. future action
have + past participle I have finished. completed action
past participles finished, written, sent, done the verb form used after will have

Quick recall: regular verbs often end in -ed. Important irregular forms include done, written, sent, gone, seen, made.

Listening and Viewing

First viewing – gist: What is the main idea: an action happening now, an action in progress later, or an action completed by a future point?

Second viewing – listen for chunks: Notice will have, by and past participles. Pause only after a complete example.

Third viewing – timeline check: For one example, point to:

  1. the action,
  2. the future reference point,
  3. the moment when the action is already complete.

Audio strategy: In connected speech, will have may sound shorter and more linked than in careful speech. Your goal is recognition, not accent imitation.

Short video option

Use the short video for a second voice and a faster review. Watch once without notes, then once with the question: What is finished by what future time?

Reading

Fictional school context – Nora Vale, Year 10

Subject: Work-experience week

Hi Ms Reed,

By Monday morning, I will have completed the online safety module. By Tuesday, I will have prepared my short introduction. By the end of the week, I will have written a one-page report. I am looking forward to the week.

Best,
Nora

Understand first:

  1. Which three future reference points can you find?
  2. What will be complete by each point?
  3. Which words help you recognise completion?

No full translation: Build a simple meaning map: future point → completed action.

Context vocabulary

English Easy English meaning German hint
by no later than a point in time bis spätestens
deadline the last possible time to finish Abgabetermin
complete finish all parts abschließen
submit hand in work abgeben
report a short written account Bericht
application a request for a job or training place Bewerbung
prepare get ready vorbereiten
finish bring something to an end beenden

Vocabulary strategy: First use the sentence around the word. Use the German hint only when the context is not enough.

Respond: quick meaning checks

Choose the meaning that matches.

A. By 5 pm, we will have completed the poster.
→ At 5 pm, is the poster planned to be complete? Yes.

B. At 5 pm, we will be working on the poster.
→ At 5 pm, is the work in progress? Yes.

C. By 5 pm, we won't have completed the poster.
→ Is the poster complete by 5 pm? No.

Functional grammar: see the timeline

Meaning first:

Now Action Future reference point
3 pm write the report → finish it by 6 pm: report complete

Sentence: By 6 pm, I will have finished the report.

The sentence looks forward to 6 pm and sees the action as already complete by then.

Core form to recognise: will have + past participle

Pattern Example Reception goal
positive will have finished recognise a completed future action
negative won't have finished recognise that it is not complete by the future point
question Will you have finished ...? recognise a question about completion by a future point

You only need to recognise these patterns confidently here.

Time signals

Common signals are by Friday, by 6 pm, by then, by the time ... and sometimes before ....

Important: by Friday means no later than Friday. It does not automatically mean that the action continues all the way until Friday.

Compare future meanings

Sentence Main meaning
I will finish the report. The finishing is in the future.
At 6 pm, I will be writing the report. The action is in progress at 6 pm.
By 6 pm, I will have finished the report. The action is complete by 6 pm.

Recognition trick: Find the time point first. Then ask: happening, in progress, or already complete?

Pronunciation for understanding

You do not need a special accent. Understandability comes before accent imitation.

Listen for these chunks:

  1. will have / contracted ’ll have
  2. won’t have
  3. the stressed content word in the past participle, for example FINished, WRITten, SENT

If the speaker talks quickly, use the time phrase as an anchor: by Friday ... will have ...

Speaking – supported, not forced

Work with a partner. One person reads a timeline sentence. The other gives a short meaning response.

Model:
A: By Friday, Mia will have sent the email.
B: The email is complete and sent by Friday.

Useful support:

  1. The future point is ...
  2. The completed action is ...
  3. It will be complete by ...
  4. Can you say that again, please?
  5. Do you mean before or at that time?

Optional extension: Make one new sentence from a model. This is not the main grammar target.

Writing – small, structured step

Fictional email plan

Time Task
by Tuesday prepare the slides
by Thursday send the draft
by Friday complete the report

Write a three-line email using the model:

By Tuesday, I will have prepared the slides.

You may copy the structure and change only the time and action. Keep the focus on clear meaning, not on writing a long text.

Mediation – meaning, not word-for-word translation

A fictional internship supervisor says:

By Monday, you will have completed the safety module.

Explain the message to a German-speaking classmate in one or two short sentences. Include:

  1. what has to be complete,
  2. by when.

Do not translate every word. Transfer the important information.

Help box

If a sentence feels difficult, use this order:

  1. Find the future time: by when?
  2. Find will have: is this the Future-Perfect signal?
  3. Find the past participle: what action is completed?
  4. Build the meaning: complete by that future point.

Verb help: finished, completed, prepared, sent, written, done, made, gone.

Feedback and error analysis

Example What to notice Better understanding
will have finish after have, expect a past participle recognise will have finished
By 6 pm, I will have finished. by 6 pm is the future reference point completion is reached no later than 6 pm
At 6 pm, I will be working. be + -ing signals progress the action is in progress at 6 pm
By 6 pm, I won't have finished. won't makes the completion negative the action is not complete by 6 pm

Feedback rule: Check meaning first. Then correct only the one form feature that blocks understanding.

Revise

Keep your first version. After feedback, revise only what is needed:

  1. mark the future reference point,
  2. check whether the meaning is complete by that point,
  3. check will have + past participle only if the form is part of your task.

Compare version 1 and version 2. Your own text stays visible so you can see what improved.

Safe use of media and AI

This course does not require public uploads, external AI tools or real personal profiles. Use only fictional names and applications in tasks.

If you make an audio recording, keep it voluntary and private unless you actively choose otherwise. If you use an AI tool on your own initiative, do not enter personal data, check claims and sources, and keep your own original text instead of replacing it automatically.

Transfer

Imagine a fictional school project with this plan:

Future point Planned completed action
by Wednesday research finished
by Thursday slides prepared
by Friday presentation practised

Your task is not to produce perfect grammar. Explain what will already be complete at each future point. Then choose one row and use the model By ..., we will have ... if you want the extra challenge.

Can-do check

Can-do Not yet With help Yes
I can spot will have + past participle. □ □ □
I can find the future reference point. □ □ □
I can understand what is complete by that point. □ □ □
I can distinguish completion from an action in progress. □ □ □
I can explain the meaning without a full translation. □ □ □

If you tick With help or Not yet, return to the timeline and the Help box before doing more production.
