E10 G - Answer questions after a presentation
Einleitung

Mini-Beschreibung: After a presentation, people may ask questions. You listen, understand the key point, answer briefly and clearly, or ask for repetition or clarification. Du arbeitest mit kurzen, gut strukturierten englischen Äußerungen. Ziel ist sichere Verständigung – nicht Akzentfreiheit.
Lernweg: English first → understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer.
I can …
- I can listen to a simple question after a presentation and identify the key point.
- I can respond with a short, relevant answer and give a simple reason or example.
- I can ask for repetition when I did not hear a question.

Look at the photo. Think in English first.
- What can happen after a presentation?
- What can you say if you do not hear a question?
- What can you say if you understand only part of a question?
- What makes a good short answer?

Input: Answer questions after a presentation
The simple Q&A routine
Use this five-step routine:
| Step | Useful English | Your job |
|---|---|---|
| Listen | Listen to the whole question. | Finde das Schlüsselwort. |
| Check | So, do you mean …? | Prüfe, ob Du richtig verstanden hast. |
| Clarify | Could you repeat that, please? / Could you explain what you mean? | Frage nach, wenn etwas fehlt. |
| Answer | Yes, because … / I think … because … / One example is … | Antworte kurz und passend. |
| Close | Does that answer your question? | Prüfe, ob die Antwort genügt. |
Rule: You do not need a long answer. One clear idea + one reason or example is often enough.
Key phrases: repeat, clarify, check

If you did not hear it:
- Could you repeat that, please?
- Could you say the last part again, please?
- Could you speak a little more slowly, please?
If you heard it but the meaning is unclear:
- What do you mean by …?
- Could you explain that in a different way?
- Do you mean …?
If you want to check before answering:
- So, you are asking about …, right?
- If I understand you correctly, you mean …
If you need thinking time:
- Let me think for a moment.
- That is an interesting point.
- I think the main reason is …
Listening and viewing: asking for clarification
Watch the short BBC Learning English video. First watch: understand the situation. Second watch: listen for useful questions.
While watching:
- Which information is unclear?
- Which questions help Mary get clearer instructions?
- Choose one useful phrase and say it aloud.
After watching: Change the situation. Imagine you have just presented a school project. A classmate asks a long question. Use one clarification phrase before you answer.
Reading: a short fictional Q&A
Context: Jamie has presented a fictional idea for a school repair café.
Audience: Why do you think students would use the repair café?
Jamie: I think they would use it because small repairs can save money. It could also be a place where students learn practical skills.
Audience: How often would it be open?
Jamie: Sorry, could you repeat that, please?
Audience: How often would the repair café be open?
Jamie: Once a week after school. That would be a simple start.
Audience: Do you mean that teachers would repair everything?
Jamie: No. Students would do simple repairs with support. Teachers would only help when needed.
Think:
- Which answer gives a reason?
- Where does Jamie ask for repetition?
- Where does Jamie correct a misunderstanding?
- Which answer is shortest and still complete?
Context vocabulary
| Word or phrase | Meaning in this course | Example |
|---|---|---|
| audience | people who listen to a presentation | The audience asks a question. |
| key point | the main idea | I understand the key point. |
| clarify | make something clearer | Could you clarify the question? |
| repeat | say the same words again | Could you repeat that? |
| rephrase | say the same idea in another way | Could you rephrase that? |
| relevant | connected to the topic | Give a relevant answer. |
| reason | why something is true or useful | My reason is simple. |
| example | a concrete case | One example is our school. |
Pronunciation: clear before perfect
Your goal is easy-to-understand English. Speak at a moderate speed. Stress the important word in your answer.
- Could you REPEAT that, please?
- What do you MEAN by that?
- The main REASON is …
- One EXAMPLE is …

Mini-practice: Say each phrase once. Then say it again a little more slowly. Aufnahme ist freiwillig und bleibt privat. Lade nichts ungefragt hoch.
Functional grammar
You need only a few reliable patterns.
| Function | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| polite request | could + subject + base verb | Could you repeat that? |
| simple request | can + subject + base verb | Can you say that again? |
| reason | statement + because + reason | I support the idea because it is practical. |
| example | One example is + noun phrase | One example is our recycling project. |
| checking | Do you mean + idea? | Do you mean the cost? |
Accuracy focus: After could you and can you, use the base form: repeat, say, explain, speak.
Listening and viewing: Q&A after a presentation
This video shows strategies for answering questions after a presentation.
Watch with a simple task:
- First: What is the main advice?
- Second: Listen for the order: listen – understand – respond.
- Third: Choose one tip that helps you answer more clearly.
G-level help: You do not need to understand every word. Focus on the key idea and the examples.
Speaking: short answer frames

Choose one frame.
- Direct answer: Yes, I think so because …
- Opinion: In my opinion, … because …
- Example: One example is …
- Not sure: I am not completely sure, but I think …
- Need repetition: Sorry, could you repeat the last part?
- Need clarification: Do you mean …?
- No information: I do not have that information, but I can explain …
Pair practice: Student A gives a 30-second mini-presentation about a fictional school idea. Student B asks one simple question. Student A answers in one or two sentences. Then change roles.
Writing: prepare for likely questions
Before a presentation, write three likely questions and short answers.
Topic example: A fictional plan for a school reading corner.
| Likely question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Why is the idea useful? | It is useful because students need a quiet place to read. |
| How much space do you need? | We only need one small corner of the library. |
| Who can use it? | All students can use it during breaks. |
Now write your own three question-answer pairs. Keep each answer short.
Optional mediation
A German-speaking classmate says: „Ich habe die Frage nicht verstanden. Wie kann ich höflich nachfragen?“
Do not translate everything word for word. Give two useful English phrases that fit the situation and explain briefly when to use them.
Feedback and revision
Use two stars and one step after a Q&A practice.
- Star 1: One thing that was clear.
- Star 2: One phrase that worked well.
- Step: One small change for the next answer.
Useful feedback:
- Your answer was clear because …
- Your example helped me understand …
- Next time, answer the main point first.
- Next time, ask for clarification before guessing.
Fehleranalyse
Correct the communication problem, not every small language mistake.
| Problem | Better version |
|---|---|
| Repeat! | Could you repeat that, please? |
| What you mean? | What do you mean? |
| Could you repeating that? | Could you repeat that? |
| I no understand. | I do not understand. Could you explain that? |
| Very long answer with no main point | Main point first, then one reason or example. |
Transfer
Use the same strategy in other situations:
- after a class presentation
- in a school project meeting
- in a short job interview with fictional profiles
- when asking about instructions
- when talking to an international visitor
Transfer question: What changes? The topic changes. The communication routine stays similar: listen → check → clarify → answer → close.
Media extension
Listen for more ways to ask for repetition. You do not need to learn every phrase.
Task: Find two phrases that sound useful for school or everyday communication. Choose one. Practise only that one.
Responsible learning with media and AI
- Use fictional profiles, applications and school scenarios.
- Recordings are voluntary and private.
- Do not upload voices, faces or school data without permission.
- Do not send personal material to external AI services without permission.
- Check AI-generated facts, phrases and sources.
- Keep your own wording: use feedback to revise, not to replace your text.
- Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.
- Avoid culture stereotypes. Different speakers use English in different ways.
