English: Part of a copper alloy vessel probably dating from the Roman period. The vessel has been made from sheet metal which has been hammered to about 1mm or less. Less than half of the vessel survives; most of one side but little of the centre. The surviving pieces consist of one large piece and three small fragments. The rim is not thickened or decorated at all. The wall of the vessel has slight circumferential bands which are probably a result of the process of hammering and raising the sides. It is not decorated. Most of the breaks are patinated. The vessel appears to have been a large shallow bowl. It had a rim which is likely to be more than 180mm in diameter but the surviving piece is slightly bent out of shape, making the rim diameter difficult to estimate. The inside of the vessel is light grey green but the outside is dark grey with white patches. It is possible that the outside was originally tinned. It is unusual for large pieces of thin sheet metal to survive. Three similar examples of Roman sheet vessels on the database are KENT-6E89B4, NLM-6A7473 and SWYOR-E4D7D0 but these both have thickened rims which would make them sturdier. A hoard of late Roman sheet vessels was discovered near Amersham, Buckinghamshire (see Britannia Volume 19, Farley, Henig and Taylor, 1988) and a late Roman date is also likely for this vessel. Other Roman objects have also been found in the same field. The large surviving piece is 329mm long, 245mm wide and 0.76mm thick. It weighs 197.8g. The smaller pieces are 70.1mm long, 31.6mm long and 25.5mm long respectively. The surviving pieces of the vessel weigh 205.7g in total.
