"Final Decision" , by Erik Pevernagie, oil on canvas, 100 x 80 cm . . xxxD

DESCRIPTION OF THE PAINTING

In “Final Decision,” Erik Pevernagie captures the silent, weighty choreography of choice—those pivotal instants in life when hesitation must yield to determination. Through a fractured geometry of planes and edges, the artist constructs a psychological stage where a solitary figure becomes the focal point of an existential crossroads.

The figure, stripped of facial features or narrative detail, is defined instead by posture and proximity to sharply angled shapes. It stands as a proxy for every viewer: a human presence standing upright but leaning subtly forward, poised on the threshold of action. The surrounding forms—steep triangles, slanted rectangles, constricting corridors—evoke the pressures, constraints, and competing forces that encircle decision-making. Nothing is soft or hesitant in this visual language: life is pressing, time is insisting, and the next move must be made.

Pevernagie’s palette enhances the thematic tension. The grey tones embody uncertainty and the weight of risk, while bold areas of yellow and red suggest burning alternatives—routes marked by hope or danger, opportunity or consequence. Each zone of color becomes a symbolic direction the figure could take, yet the way forward remains opaque. Which path promises fulfillment? Which threatens regret?

In this painting, the moment before becomes monumental. It is not the decision itself that Pevernagie portrays, but the inner gravity of commitment. He reminds us that our futures coalesce in quiet instants—where we confront ourselves, evaluate fear against aspiration, and accept the responsibility embedded in freedom.

The work also echoes the artist’s broader exploration of the human condition: To be alive is to choose—and to be accountable for choosing.

“Final Decision” thus becomes a mirror for our own crossroads: Will we step boldly into uncertainty, or remain immobilized by the safety of what we already know?

Pevernagie gives us no answer—only the urgent and timeless truth that decisions, once made, shape not only our journey, but who we become along the way.

MEDITATION ON THE PAINTING

People may struggle when faced with vital decisions. Thoughtful resolutions must empower us to function and be confident if we want to take control of our lives.

The discovery of new human surroundings can enable us to make choices that improve our quality of life and restructure our perception.

If we want to eschew awkward entanglements, we shall sharpen our perception, stay on top of what is "truly" happening worldwide and what our inner circles experience, and understand how they react to sensitive issues.

If we act with clarity, integrity, and understanding, we can justify our actions to ourselves and others. Acting out of ignorance or false assumptions doesn't exempt us from responsibility. Every decision defines who we are and implies that we must bear its consequences, even if our actions depend on misunderstanding.

If we base our good intentions on ignorance or illusions, we remain responsible for our actions and must accept making amends for the damage we cause.

Discovering new surroundings with new social, cultural, or physical settings lets us encounter fresh perspectives and insights and reshape our values, priorities, and decisions. Our perception of reality as constantly evolving allows us to become more informed and adaptable, enabling us to make "responsible" decisions.

Let us cultivate perceptiveness and improve our ability to see clearly both the world and oneself. Without that, even “good intentions” risk becoming harmful illusions.

Restructuring our perception does not mean simply “adding facts” to our worldview, but altering the footing on which we make decisions when we see how the world is changing. Making decisions is an act of self-definition and self-creation guided by informed reason, not by blind impulse or deception.

We must realize that a “final” decision is never entirely final. A final decision is not about closing a chapter, but about crystallizing our current knowledge and values. Our self evolves, circumstances change, and new insights emerge. The act of deciding shapes us, but the ongoing act of reflecting on those decisions shapes us even more.

When we take fair and impartial decisions, we need not focus on the chink in the canvas of darkness but on the light piercing through it. We can find the natural rhythm and strike a perfect chord, sing our "own" song, tuning our life's signature.

If we put our brain's sterile mechanism on hold, we can view an ocean of enticing, eye-opening perspectives. Life offers us an array of choices, allowing us to discover a spray of overpowering colors, hear overwhelming new sounds, and smell the intense fragrances of nature.
