ABI LF - Vollständige Kommunikationsprüfung simulieren

Einleitung

This aiMOOC lets you rehearse a complete 2027 English communication exam for the Abitur in Baden-Württemberg, Leistungsfach. You work through a media warm-up, a 15-minute preparation phase, a timed monologue and a dialogue, then use official-style criteria for feedback and error analysis.

The simulated materials are original or freely licensed. All survey data and school scenarios are fictional practice data. No complete compulsory text and no unauthorised film sequence is reproduced. Recordings are optional and should stay private unless everybody involved has explicitly agreed to sharing.

English first: Try context, word formation, visual clues, an English explanation and your dictionary before using German help.

Watch the British Council example for interaction, not as a model of the Baden-Württemberg exam format. While watching, note how speakers take turns, react, justify and keep the discussion moving.

I-can goals

  1. I can explain the 2027 structure of the communication exam and distinguish it from the written exam.
  2. I can prepare an unfamiliar visual, quotation or short text within 15 minutes.
  3. I can speak coherently for about five minutes without reading a script.
  4. I can connect materials, course knowledge and a justified interpretation at Leistungsfach level.
  5. I can react spontaneously, challenge an idea politely and develop a discussion.
  6. I can use evidence, precise vocabulary, discourse markers and appropriate register.
  7. I can evaluate my performance using content, interaction/discourse and language criteria.
  8. I can identify one high-impact next step instead of trying to correct everything at once.

Vorwissen aktivieren

Without looking anything up, answer in English:

  1. What makes a strong five-minute monologue different from a written essay?
  2. Which phrases help you disagree without stopping the conversation?
  3. How can you use a visual source without merely describing it?
  4. Which 2027 course topics could connect to migration, belonging, identity, the USA or the UK?
  5. What would you do if you forgot a word in the middle of the exam?

Prüfungsmodus verstehen

A useful mental model is Prepare → Structure → Speak → Interact → Reflect.

Phase Your job Common trap
Preparation reduce the material to a few usable ideas and links writing a full script
Monologue make a clear claim, develop it and connect evidence retelling material without analysis
Dialogue listen, respond, extend, challenge and negotiate giving mini-monologues next to each other
Feedback identify evidence of success and one next step counting every grammar mistake

Einzelprüfung oder Tandem?

Individual exam: You speak for about five minutes. The teacher then creates the thematic transition and acts as your dialogue partner for about ten minutes.

Tandem exam: Each candidate gives a monologue of about five minutes. You listen to one another and may take notes. Then both candidates discuss the task for about ten minutes. The dialogue should develop independently; examiner prompts are possible if the conversation stalls.

Listening and Viewing

Viewing task: discourse markers

  1. Identify three discourse markers that organise spoken ideas.
  2. Classify them: opinion, reformulation, emphasis, transition or summary.
  3. Use two of them in a 30-second answer to: What can make a person feel that they belong?

Observation task: advanced speaking

This Cambridge C1 speaking video is not the Baden-Württemberg examination format. Use it only to observe transferable speaking skills.

  1. Track one speaker for 90 seconds.
  2. Note evidence for fluency, precision, interaction and repair strategies.
  3. Replace a vague phrase you hear with a more precise alternative of your own.
  4. Explain which feature would transfer well to the Baden-Württemberg Kommunikationsprüfung.

Dialogic thinking task

Watch a suitable section of the TED talk on productive disagreement. Then test this pattern:

Common ground → disagreement → reason → evidence/example → return question

Example: I agree that personal contact matters. Where I differ is the assumption that contact alone is enough, because ... How would you account for ...?

Context vocabulary

Build vocabulary from meaning networks, not isolated translations.

Core word Word family Useful collocation English explanation
belong belonging, belongings sense of belonging feeling accepted and connected to a place or group
integrate integration, integrative social integration process of becoming part of a community while participating in it
migrate migration, migrant, migratory migration experience movement from one place or country to another
include inclusion, inclusive inclusive community allowing different people to participate and feel respected
displace displacement, displaced forced displacement being made to leave a home or usual place
negotiate negotiation, negotiable negotiate a compromise discuss different positions in order to reach an agreement

Word-building drill: Turn the noun into a useful speaking phrase: identity → identify with; participation → participate in; evidence → provide evidence for; contrast → in contrast to; assumption → challenge the assumption that.

Help ladder

Use help in this order:

  1. Context: What meaning fits the sentence and topic?
  2. Word formation: Can a known root help?
  3. Visualisation: Can you picture or paraphrase the idea?
  4. English explanation: Define the word with simpler English.
  5. Dictionary: Check meaning, pronunciation, collocation and register.
  6. German rescue: Use German only if the previous steps fail.

Reading

Read this original practice text. It is not an official exam text.

Practice text – “Belonging is an activity”

A fictional youth centre called Harbour House has redesigned its welcome programme for newly arrived students. Instead of beginning with a long information session, the centre pairs newcomers with local peer mentors and asks both sides to complete small projects together. The organisers say that people often learn practical language, routines and unwritten social rules faster when they work toward a shared goal. Critics in the fictional case warn that short projects can create superficial contact and may place too much responsibility on volunteers. The centre therefore combines peer activities with professional counselling and access to formal language support. Its working principle is simple: belonging is not treated as a label people receive on arrival, but as something that can grow through participation, recognition and repeated contact.

Reading task

  1. State the central claim in one sentence.
  2. Analyse how the final sentence reframes the concept of belonging.
  3. Identify one limitation already acknowledged by the text.
  4. Relate the text to one course concept without summarising a compulsory work.

Visual analysis

Use the historical image as an analysis prompt, not as proof for present-day migration experiences.

Three-layer method

  1. Observe: people, setting, composition, distance, gaze, visible objects.
  2. Interpret: possible effects, symbolism, perspective and limits of inference.
  3. Connect: relate the image to concepts such as movement, arrival, belonging, identity and historical context.

Avoid claims about the people’s emotions unless the image itself supports them.

Complete mock exam

All names, institutions and survey data below are fictional. The task is designed to imitate the structure and level of a 2027 Leistungsfach communication exam, not to reproduce an official paper.

Exam scenario

Your school participates in the fictional Crossing Stories Project. Students are preparing an English-language event on migration, identity and belonging. You receive a historical visual, a short original text and fictional survey data.

Fictional survey: “What helps young newcomers feel they belong?” Sample: 200 fictional students aged 16–19. Participants could choose up to two answers.

Factor Share selecting it
regular peer contact 68 percent
confidence using the local language 54 percent
access to clubs and shared activities 41 percent
clear routes into education or work 36 percent
opportunities to share personal stories publicly 28 percent

Important: These figures are invented for practice. Do not cite them as real research.

15-minute preparation simulation

Start a real timer.

Time Action
Minutes 0–2 read all tasks; underline the operator and the exact focus
Minutes 2–5 inspect the visual and survey; note three high-value observations
Minutes 5–8 connect the material to course knowledge and one wider concept
Minutes 8–11 build a monologue skeleton with claim, evidence, analysis and link
Minutes 11–13 prepare the dialogic task: position, counterpoint, compromise
Minutes 13–15 check vocabulary, pronunciation and one difficult collocation in the dictionary

Do not write complete sentences unless you need one exact phrase. Aim for keywords, arrows and evidence labels.

Candidate A: monologue task

Speak for about five minutes.

Task

Analyze how the historical image, the practice text and the fictional survey present different dimensions of belonging. Relate your findings to the 2027 focus On the Move: Migration and Cross-Cultural Encounters. Then assess the statement: A sense of belonging develops mainly through participation rather than through arrival itself.

Leistungsfach expectation: Move beyond description. Link at least two materials explicitly, distinguish evidence from inference, use a relevant course concept and make a reasoned qualification of the statement.

Candidate B: tandem variant

If you train the tandem format, Candidate B prepares this additional original stimulus:

Fictional statement

A person should not have to choose between an old identity and a new one. Belonging can be layered, changing and shared across places.

Task

Examine the assumptions about identity in the statement. Relate them to migration and cross-cultural encounters. Evaluate how useful the idea of layered identity is for understanding the experience of moving between cultures.

Candidate B should also use at least one element from the historical image or fictional survey.

Five-minute monologue structure

Function Useful move
Opening define the focus and give a concise thesis
Material link 1 move from observation to interpretation
Material link 2 compare or qualify using a second source
Course connection use knowledge selectively as evidence, not as a plot summary
Evaluation weigh the claim, add a limitation or counterargument
Close return to the thesis with a differentiated conclusion

Useful phrases:

The material foregrounds ... This becomes significant when compared with ... Rather than presenting belonging as ..., the source suggests ... A limitation of this interpretation is ... This can be related to ... because ... To a considerable extent, the claim is convincing; however ...

Ten-minute dialogue task

Situation

The fictional Crossing Stories Project can fund only two of the following activities for its final school event:

Option Short description
Peer mentoring lab pairs students for recurring joint projects
Story gallery presents voluntary anonymous or pseudonymous migration stories
Language café offers informal conversation with trained student hosts
Skills bridge links newcomers with education and career guidance
Arts and sports exchange creates mixed teams around shared creative or physical activities

Dialogue goal

Discuss which two activities should be selected. Develop criteria, challenge each other’s assumptions, refer to the material, consider practical limits and reach a justified joint decision if possible.

For the individual exam, a teacher or partner takes the second role. For the tandem exam, both candidates should contribute, react and move the conversation forward.

Interaction moves

Function Language
invite What is your take on that?
build I would build on your point by adding ...
challenge I see the logic, but does that assumption hold if ...?
qualify That may be true in some cases, although ...
clarify By participation, do you mean ...?
redirect Could we apply the same criterion to ...?
negotiate If we prioritise impact and feasibility, perhaps we could ...
summarise So far, we seem to agree on ..., while ... remains open.

After watching a suitable section, choose one aspect of delivery to practise: pace, pause, emphasis, articulation or vocal variety. Do not imitate a speaker’s accent; aim for intelligibility and control.

Optional Mediation micro-task

A German-speaking student helper says:

„Bei unserem Projekttag sollen persönliche Erfahrungen nur freiwillig eingebracht werden. Niemand muss seine Familiengeschichte öffentlich erzählen. Wer mitmacht, entscheidet selbst, ob Name, Foto oder Aufnahme verwendet werden dürfen.“

Without translating word for word, mediate the information into English for an international project partner. Keep the purpose and privacy safeguards clear.

Possible opening: The school wants participation to remain voluntary. Students are not expected to disclose family histories, and ...

Feedback after the simulation

Use observable evidence. Do not give feedback such as good English or more vocabulary without an example.

Criterion Evidence question Next-step question
Task fulfilment and content Did the speaker answer the operator, structure ideas, use evidence and make meaningful material links? Which analytical or evaluative move would deepen the response?
Strategy, interaction and discourse Did the speaker react, ask, develop, challenge, clarify and keep the dialogue moving? Which interaction move was missing or overused?
Language Was grammar mostly controlled, vocabulary precise, speech fluent and pronunciation intelligible? Which repeated pattern would improve clarity most if corrected?

Feedback protocol

  1. Quote or paraphrase one successful moment.
  2. Name the criterion it demonstrates.
  3. Identify one missed opportunity.
  4. Give one concrete alternative phrase or move.
  5. Set one target for the next run.

Error analysis

Classify errors before correcting them.

Error type Example Repair strategy
content gap material mentioned but not interpreted add This suggests ... because ...
evidence gap broad claim without support link to a source, example or course concept
interaction gap answer ignores partner’s point begin by paraphrasing or qualifying the partner
vocabulary gap repeated good, bad, important replace with precise evaluative language
grammar pattern repeated tense or agreement error practise one pattern in short oral drills
fluency problem long silent search for one word paraphrase and continue

Do not stop after every error. In a communication exam, intelligibility, coherence and interaction matter alongside accuracy.

Writing transfer

The communication exam is oral, but short writing can sharpen later speaking.

Write a 180–220 word reflection memo after your simulation:

Which one change would most improve my next performance, and what evidence from this attempt supports that decision?

Include one example from the monologue and one from the dialogue. Do not ask an AI system to write the memo for you.

KI, Quellen und Datenschutz

  1. Do the material analysis and first speaking attempt yourself.
  2. If you later use AI for feedback, check every factual claim and source independently.
  3. Never treat generated quotations, page references or statistics as reliable without verification.
  4. Do not use AI to produce a replacement monologue or complete model answer that you memorise.
  5. If AI support was used for a school task, follow your school’s rules for disclosure.
  6. Do not upload private recordings, names, faces or personal migration stories without explicit consent.
  7. External AI access is not required for this aiMOOC.
  8. For practice data in this course, assume names and numbers are fictional unless a source is explicitly given.

Differenzierung Leistungsfach

Support

Use the six-part monologue table, the interaction moves and a prepared vocabulary map.

Core

Connect at least two materials and include one counterargument or limitation.

LF+

Add a second course connection, analyse ambiguity or perspective, distinguish historical from contemporary evidence and evaluate the limits of your own interpretation.

Challenge

Repeat the exam with a new prompt but reduce notes to twelve keywords.

Abi-Check

Before you finish, check:

  1. Did I answer the operator rather than a topic I preferred?
  2. Did I analyse instead of merely describe?
  3. Did I connect at least two pieces of material?
  4. Did I distinguish evidence, inference and evaluation?
  5. Did I use course knowledge selectively and accurately?
  6. Did I keep my monologue coherent for about five minutes?
  7. Did I respond directly to my partner in the dialogue?
  8. Did I use clarification, qualification and negotiation?
  9. Did I speak clearly enough to be understood throughout?
  10. Did I finish with a reasoned conclusion or joint result?

Transfer

Run the same format with a new claim:

“Cross-cultural encounters change both newcomers and established communities.”

Use one new freely licensed visual and create a small fictional dataset. Label all invented numbers clearly. Keep the preparation time at 15 minutes and maintain the same feedback criteria.
