ABI LF - Monologisches Sprechen für etwa fünf Minuten trainieren

Mini-Beschreibung: Develop a clear, well-structured contribution of about five minutes from a visual, auditory, audiovisual or short written impulse. This aiMOOC is designed for the Leistungsfach Englisch in the Kursstufe in Baden-Württemberg. Work from keyword notes, not from a memorised script.

Einleitung

Your task is not to recite a perfect text. Your task is to understand an impulse, select what matters, analyse it, connect it to relevant context and speak coherently for about five minutes.

The core routine is:

Understand → Select → Structure → Support → Evaluate → Conclude.

English comes first. If a word is missing, try this order: context → word family → visualisation → English explanation → dictionary → short German help. Do not translate your whole contribution from German.

Media task: Watch a short section of the BBC Learning English video. Do not copy sentences. Note only five useful keywords about how spoken contributions can be organised. Then explain the advice in your own English.

I-can-Ziele

By the end of this aiMOOC, you can:

  1. I can structure a five-minute monologue with a clear opening, development and conclusion.
  2. I can read the operator first and turn it into a speaking plan.
  3. I can analyse an impulse instead of merely describing it.
  4. I can connect evidence to context and explain why the connection matters.
  5. I can speak from keyword notes without learning a script by heart.
  6. I can evaluate my own performance and set one precise next target.

Vorwissen aktivieren

Before training, answer in English without preparation:

  1. What makes a spoken contribution easy to follow?
  2. What is the difference between description and analysis?
  3. Which linking phrases do you already use automatically?
  4. Can you explain one course topic for 60 seconds without reading?

Do not judge your accent. Focus first on meaning, structure and intelligibility.

Abi-Check Baden-Württemberg

Checked for Abitur 2027; information status: 2 October 2026. Always re-check the documents for your own examination year.

For the 2027 Leistungsfach, the official Facherlass names the focus On the Move: Migration and Cross-Cultural Encounters and the reference cultures USA and United Kingdom. The same document distinguishes the written component from the Kommunikationsprüfung.

Component What matters for this course
Written component About 255 minutes in total: listening comprehension, then a break, then writing. This is not the five-minute monologue trained here.
Kommunikationsprüfung Oral component of the written Abitur examination. Preparation time: 15 minutes. Impulses may be visual, auditory, audiovisual, quotations or theses, including German-language material for mediation purposes.
Individual format At least 15 minutes in total: about 5 minutes monologue plus about 10 minutes dialogue with the teacher.
Tandem format At least 20 minutes in total: about 5 minutes monologue per person plus about 10 minutes joint dialogue.

The 2027 assessment distinguishes task fulfilment/content, strategy and discourse/interactivity and language performance. In the overall written Abitur result for the modern foreign language, listening contributes 20%, writing 55% and the Kommunikationsprüfung 25%.

Leistungsfach: Was wird anspruchsvoller?

Leistungsfach means greater breadth, depth and text complexity. Your contribution should move beyond surface description.

Aim for:

  1. precise evidence from the impulse,
  2. differentiated analysis of language, form, perspective or effect,
  3. independent linking of material and course knowledge,
  4. stronger emphasis on AFB II and III: explaining relationships, analysing, weighing and evaluating.

A long list of facts is not depth. Depth comes from explaining how, why and with what effect.

Medien-Einstieg: Speak from an impulse

Look at the image for 30 seconds.

Do not write full sentences. Write six keywords only:

  1. setting
  2. speaker
  3. gesture
  4. audience
  5. possible purpose
  6. possible effect

Now speak for 60 seconds. Use this movement:

What I see → what it suggests → why it may matter.

That movement already turns description into analysis.

Listening and Viewing

When the impulse is auditory or audiovisual, listen or watch for meaning before detail.

Use SPEAK:

  1. Speaker: Who is speaking and from what position?
  2. Purpose: What seems to be the communicative aim?
  3. Evidence: Which words, examples, sounds or visual choices support your interpretation?
  4. Audience: Who is addressed?
  5. Key effect: What response is encouraged?

For video, add camera perspective, editing, facial expression, gesture and the interaction of image and sound.

Viewing task: Watch only a short selected part of the Cambridge speaking example. Identify one feature that makes the speaker easy to follow and one moment where the speaker develops an idea rather than just naming it. The examination format in the video is not the Baden-Württemberg Abitur format; use it only as speaking-skills observation.

Reading

For a short written impulse, do not retell everything. Mark mentally:

claim → evidence → technique → effect → context.

Example: The author uses a contrast → quote or reference briefly → this sharpens the conflict → connect it to the task.

If the operator is analyze/examine, describe and explain in detail and give evidence from the material. If it is assess/evaluate, form a well-founded judgment supported by evidence and examples.

Kontextwortschatz

Build flexible word families rather than isolated translations.

Base Useful family Speaking use
migrate migration, migrant, migratory The image frames migration as ...
include inclusion, inclusive, inclusivity This may promote a more inclusive view of ...
represent representation, representative The representation suggests ...
persuade persuasion, persuasive The persuasive effect relies on ...
differ difference, different, differentiate A useful distinction is ...

Unknown word? First paraphrase it in English. Use a dictionary only after you have tried context and word formation.

Analyse

A five-minute contribution becomes strong when every major point contains a small analytical chain:

Point → Evidence → Explanation → Context → Evaluation.

Example pattern:

The visual foregrounds X. The evidence is Y. This creates/emphasises/suggests ... In the wider context of Z, this is significant because ... However, the material also simplifies/limits/complicates ...

Use interpretation cautiously. Say suggests, may imply or can be read as when the material does not prove intention.

Speaking

A five-minute architecture

This timing is a training model, not a rigid script.

Time Function What to do
0:00–0:30 Opening Address the task, identify the impulse and state your line of thought.
0:30–1:30 Material Select the most relevant feature, claim or evidence.
1:30–3:40 Analysis and context Develop two or three connected analytical points and link them to course knowledge.
3:40–4:30 Evaluation Weigh significance, limits, tensions or alternative readings.
4:30–5:00 Conclusion Answer the task directly and close the line of argument.

Keyword notes, not a script

A useful note sheet contains nouns, verbs, arrows, contrasts and evidence markers.

Weak note: “First I would like to say that the picture shows ...”

Better note: “opening → conflict / foreground → child / contrast → border / effect → vulnerability / context → identity / eval → simplified?”

Your notes should trigger thinking, not reading.

The 15-minute preparation routine

  1. 2 min – Decode: circle the operator and identify the exact task.
  2. 3 min – Inspect: collect only relevant evidence from the impulse.
  3. 4 min – Build: choose two or three main ideas and connect them logically.
  4. 3 min – Note: reduce your plan to keywords, arrows and evidence cues.
  5. 2 min – Language: add linking phrases and two precise analytical verbs.
  6. 1 min – Launch: rehearse only the first two sentences mentally.

Do not spend the 15 minutes writing a miniature essay.

Useful speaking moves

Opening: “The material raises the question of ...” / “I will focus on ...”

Developing: “A particularly significant aspect is ...” / “This becomes clear when ...”

Analysing: “This choice foregrounds ...” / “The contrast reinforces ...”

Connecting: “This can be linked to ... because ...”

Qualifying: “At the same time ...” / “This interpretation is limited by ...”

Concluding: “Taken together, the material suggests ...”

Do not force learned phrases into every sentence. Use them to make relationships clear.

Writing

Writing is a support tool, not the end product.

After a speaking attempt, write a 90-word reconstruction from memory:

  1. one thesis,
  2. two analytical points,
  3. one evaluation,
  4. one conclusion.

Then compare it with what you actually said. Which idea was missing? Which idea was repeated? Which sentence was too written for natural speech?

Mediation

A German-language quotation or thesis can be used as an impulse in the Kommunikationsprüfung. Mediation does not mean word-for-word translation.

Use: meaning → relevance → audience-appropriate English → connection to task.

If a German phrase is difficult, explain its meaning in simple English rather than searching for a perfect equivalent.

Practice impulse: fictional data

The following data are fictional and exist only for practice.

Greenfield Sixth Form survey, n = 200:

  1. 62% support using AI for brainstorming.
  2. 28% support using AI for language correction only.
  3. 10% prefer no AI support in assessed work.

Task: Analyze what the data suggest about attitudes to AI-supported learning and evaluate one possible rule for responsible classroom use.

Prepare for three minutes and speak for two. Mention that the data are fictional. Do not invent causes that the data cannot show.

Hilfen und Differenzierung

Level Support
Support Use a three-part structure, sentence starters, slower playback and a transcript only after your own first attempt. Keep one bilingual dictionary available as late support.
Core Speak for about five minutes from keyword notes, use at least two pieces of evidence and make one explicit context link.
Challenge LF Link two materials or perspectives, qualify your interpretation, address a counter-reading and give a reasoned evaluation with stronger AFB II/III emphasis.

You can also differentiate by pace, lexical complexity, amount of material and number of analytical steps. The target remains independent speaking, not dependence on scaffolds.

Feedback

Use 2 + 1 feedback after a practice monologue:

  1. Two strengths linked to criteria.
  2. One precise next step.

Useful feedback focuses on observable performance: “Your second point had clear evidence and explanation.” “Next time, make the transition to your evaluation explicit.”

Avoid vague comments such as “good English” or “speak better”.

Fehleranalyse

After each attempt, classify only your most important problems.

Problem Diagnostic question Repair
Structure Could a listener predict where I was going? Add signposting and a clearer line of thought.
Content Did I answer the operator? Rebuild the plan from the task verb.
Evidence Did I support claims with material? Add one concrete reference per main point.
Analysis Did I explain effect and significance? Add “This matters because ...”.
Language Which repeated error reduced clarity? Practise one error pattern, not twenty at once.
Fluency Did I stop because I searched for perfect wording? Paraphrase and keep moving.

Datenschutz und verantwortlicher KI-Einsatz

Recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless you explicitly decide otherwise in a safe school context. Do not upload classmates, personal data, unpublished examination material or copyrighted full texts.

Use external AI only when your teacher explicitly permits it. Never send recordings or protected material to an external AI service without informed permission. Check AI-produced claims, vocabulary and sources. AI may support practice, but it must not replace your own analysis, preparation or assessed contribution. Do not submit an AI-generated replacement essay or memorise one as your oral answer.

Transfer

The same routine works beyond the exam:

impulse → question → evidence → explanation → evaluation → concise conclusion.

Use it for seminar presentations, oral university tasks, interviews, debates and spontaneous contributions.

Abi-Check vor dem Training

Before each full simulation, check:

  1. Is this my correct examination year?
  2. Have I checked the current Facherlass and assessment rules?
  3. Am I training the Kommunikationsprüfung rather than confusing it with the separate oral additional examination?
  4. Do I know whether I am practising individual or tandem format?
  5. Am I using the current operators?
  6. Is my material legal to use and short enough for practice?
  7. Am I relying on keywords rather than a script?

Offene Aufgaben

Leicht

  1. 60-second start: Choose a harmless everyday image and speak for one minute using only six keywords.
  2. Keyword reduction: Turn a 120-word paragraph of your own writing into ten keywords and present it freely.
  3. Signposting hunt: Watch a short educational talk and collect five phrases that help listeners follow the structure.
  4. Paraphrase sprint: Explain ten course-related words without saying the words themselves.

Standard

  1. Visual impulse: Analyse a freely licensed Wikimedia Commons image for three minutes using point, evidence and explanation.
  2. Audio impulse: Use a short legal audio clip and prepare a five-minute contribution from keyword notes.
  3. Five-minute simulation: Complete a 15-minute preparation phase and give a timed monologue without reading.
  4. Peer feedback: Exchange 2 + 1 criterion-based feedback after a live practice attempt; recording is not required.

Schwer

  1. Material link: Connect two short impulses and explain one similarity, one tension and one wider contextual link.
  2. Counter-reading: Give your main interpretation, then develop a plausible alternative reading and evaluate both.
  3. AFB III challenge: Respond to an assess or evaluate task with evidence, qualification and a justified conclusion.
  4. Exam design: Create a legal, original practice task with an impulse, up to three monologue prompts and a transition to a dialogue task.

Lernkontrolle

  1. Transfer from visual to argument: You receive an unfamiliar image. Build a five-minute outline that moves from observation to interpretation, context and evaluation. Justify your order.
  2. Operator comparison: Explain how your contribution would change if the same material were paired first with analyze and then with evaluate.
  3. Evidence quality: Compare two possible references to the same impulse and explain which one supports a claim more precisely and why.
  4. Repair strategy: During a monologue you forget a key term after two minutes. Demonstrate two ways to paraphrase and continue without losing structure.
  5. Depth in the Leistungsfach: Revise a superficial three-point plan so that it contains stronger AFB II/III reasoning and independent material-context links.
  6. Format distinction: Explain why a five-minute Kommunikationsprüfung monologue should not be prepared like the approximately ten-minute opening presentation of a separate oral Abitur examination.

Lernnachweis

For a learning record, show that you can:

  1. identify the operator and task focus independently,
  2. prepare within 15 minutes,
  3. use keyword notes instead of a memorised script,
  4. sustain an approximately five-minute coherent contribution,
  5. support analysis with precise material references,
  6. connect material and course context,
  7. qualify and evaluate rather than overclaim,
  8. speak intelligibly with functional vocabulary and grammar,
  9. reflect on feedback and document one concrete improvement target,
  10. distinguish the Kommunikationsprüfung from the written component and from a separate oral additional examination.
