ABI BF - Einen authentischen Prüfungstext in 20 Minuten vorbereiten
ABI BF - Einen authentischen Prüfungstext in 20 Minuten vorbereiten

20 minutes. One new authentic text. Up to three tasks. Your job is not to write a complete speech. Your job is to understand, annotate and plan a clear route through the text.
English comes first: Nutze zunächst Kontext, Wortbildung, Visualisierung, englische Erklärungen und das Wörterbuch. Deutsche Hilfen sind die letzte Stufe, nicht der erste Reflex.

Rule of the course: Read less, notice more, plan clearly.
Für 2027 lautet das Schwerpunktthema On the Move: Migration and Cross-Cultural Encounters. Der Facherlass verweist für das Basisfach weiterhin auf den Bildungsplan 2016; die 2026 veröffentlichte neue Planfassung greift für die heutige Kursstufe noch nicht vollständig, da sie jahrgangsweise von jüngeren Klassen aufwächst.

I-can-Ziele
- I can identify the task focus and the text's main idea within the first minutes.
- I can annotate each paragraph with only a few useful words instead of rewriting it.
- I can connect evidence, technique and effect in a Basisfach-appropriate analysis.
- I can turn my notes into a flexible speaking plan for a coherent ten-minute presentation.
Vorwissen: 60-second check
Before you start, answer silently: What is the difference between summary and analysis? What does the operator ask you to do? Which two or three features of a text can create an effect? If one answer is unclear, use the help ladder below instead of translating the whole text.
Medien-Einstieg
Look at the stopwatch. Imagine the examiner has just handed you the text. What must happen before you speak?

Think in verbs: read – select – infer – connect – plan – check.
Listening / Viewing
British Council: Skimming and scanning. Watch only as much as you need to distinguish the two strategies. Then apply them immediately to an English article: first locate the big idea, then search for task-relevant details.
BBC Learning English: academic reading skills. Use the video as a strategy check, not as passive background viewing.
Reading: authentic source window

Practice source – non-fiction: National Park Service: Ellis Island Virtual Tour. The page is an authentic U.S. National Park Service source and fits the 2027 theme of movement and cross-cultural encounters.
For a realistic simulation, a teacher or study partner selects one coherent excerpt of about 200–300 words before the timer starts and provides it offline or on paper with source and word count. Do not use the whole website during the timed phase. The method in this aiMOOC also works with an unfamiliar fictional text of comparable length.
Three exam-like tasks:
- Outline the main situation and key information presented in the excerpt.
- Analyze how structure and language guide the reader's understanding. Focus on two or three relevant features and their effects.
- Assess one meaningful connection between the excerpt and the broader idea of migration or cross-cultural encounter.
The 20-minute preparation
| Time | What you do | Product |
|---|---|---|
| 0–2 min | Read the source line and all tasks. Underline the operator and the exact focus. | One clear task map |
| 2–5 min | Skim the text. Identify text type, speaker or author, situation, main idea and rough structure. | One-sentence gist |
| 5–10 min | Use concise annotation. Mark only task-relevant ideas, shifts, evidence and effects. | Short margin notes |
| 10–15 min | Read closely where the tasks require it. Infer vocabulary before checking a dictionary. | Two or three strong analytical points |
| 15–19 min | Build the speaking plan: claim – evidence – explanation – link. | A visible route through the talk |
| 19–20 min | Check task coverage, order, English keywords and one possible transition between parts. | Ready-to-speak plan |
Concise annotation: the CAP method
C – Content: Write no more than about five words for the paragraph's core idea.
A – Author move: Name the move that matters: contrast, example, statistic, image, shift, tone, perspective, repetition, direct address, narrative change.
P – Purpose: Add one short effect or function linked to the task.
Example note: C: arrival becomes controlled → A: contrast + official tone → P: hope vs institution. That is enough. You need speaking prompts, not polished prose.

Vocabulary: help ladder
Do not stop at every unknown word. Climb this ladder only as far as necessary.
- Context: What meaning would make the sentence logical?
- Word formation: Look for prefix, root and suffix.
- Visualisation: Draw or imagine the action, relation or contrast.
- English explanation: Replace the word with a simpler English paraphrase.
- Dictionary: Check only words that block the task.
- German help: Use a German equivalent only if the previous steps still do not resolve the problem.

Analysis
For non-fiction, prioritize line of argument, structure, examples or statistics, forms of address, perspective, register and tone. For fiction, prioritize narrator or perspective, characterisation, setting, conflict, structural shifts, imagery, tone and narrative technique.
Basisfach principle: Two well-explained observations with textual evidence are stronger than a long list of stylistic devices. Always complete the chain: feature → evidence → effect → task link.
Planning: one page, no script

Build a simple speaking map:
- Opening: source, text type, topic, main idea.
- Task block 1: key content in a logical order.
- Task block 2: two or three analytical claims with evidence and effect.
- Task block 3: short, reasoned transfer or assessment if required.
- Closing: one sentence that reconnects the text to the overall issue.
Write keywords, arrows and line references. Do not write complete paragraphs unless one sentence is needed to stabilise your opening.
Speaking

A practical ten-minute route is flexible rather than mechanical: about half a minute for the opening, roughly two minutes for content, four to five minutes for analysis, one to two minutes for transfer or assessment, and a brief closing. Adapt this to the actual number and weight of tasks.
Useful frames:
- The excerpt focuses on...
- A key shift occurs when...
- The author emphasises this by...
- This has the effect of...
- This matters for the task because...
- Overall, the text suggests...
Speak from the plan. Do not memorise a script.
Prüfungsgespräch
The second part is not a second prepared speech. Listen to the question, answer the core point first, then justify and connect. A useful pattern is: answer → evidence or example → wider link. If you need time, use natural English such as One aspect I would distinguish is... or A useful way of looking at this is....
Recordings for practice are optional. If you record yourself, keep the file private unless you actively choose to share it. No upload is required.
Writing
Use writing only to sharpen thinking. A five-line micro-plan is enough:
Claim → evidence → technique → effect → link to task.
Do not use AI to generate a replacement analysis, speech or essay. If you use AI outside the timed practice for feedback, label that support, check every quotation and factual claim against the original source, and revise the result yourself.
Optional Mediation
No full translation. Choose one culture-specific detail from a practice text and explain its meaning briefly for a German-speaking partner. Preserve the relevant meaning and context; do not translate sentence by sentence.
Hilfen und Differenzierung
Core route – Basisfach: one clear gist, one structural observation, two strong analysis points, one short transfer.
More support: use the CAP labels, sentence frames and a three-box speaking plan. Limit dictionary checks to task-blocking words.
More challenge: identify a meaningful shift, compare two techniques, or explain how perspective changes the effect.
You may adjust language load, text complexity and speaking speed. The learning goal remains the same: understand securely, analyse relevantly and communicate coherently.
Feedback und Fehleranalyse
After practice, diagnose the process rather than only the final English.
| If this happened... | Try this next time |
|---|---|
| I spent too long translating. | Force a gist sentence after the first skim. |
| My notes became a script. | Replace sentences with keywords and arrows. |
| I named devices without explaining them. | Add one effect and one task link to every selected feature. |
| I ignored the operator. | Circle the operator before reading closely. |
| I ran out of speaking structure. | Build the plan before polishing vocabulary. |
| I looked up too many words. | Use context and word formation first. |
Transfer
Repeat the same 20-minute routine with a different text type. If the first text was non-fiction, choose a short fictional text next. Keep the timing but change the analysis lens. The strategy should survive the change of topic.
Abi-Check
Before ending the preparation, ask:
- Have I answered every task?
- Can I state the gist in one sentence?
- Do I have only task-relevant annotations?
- Do my analysis points include evidence and effect?
- Is my plan readable at a glance?
- Can I move between sections with English transitions?
- Have I avoided writing a complete script?
- Am I ready to speak even if I forget one prepared phrase?

Lückentext
Offene Aufgaben
Leicht
