Stable and Intentional Shots
A tripod is useful when the frame should feel controlled or when the audience needs time to study a process. Handheld recording can feel immediate, but accidental shake may distract from instructions or details. Stabilization should serve the message rather than being used only because a device can move smoothly.
Before recording, check the edges of the frame. Remove distracting objects where possible, avoid awkward background lines through a person's head, and make sure safety information, tools, or product details are actually visible.
Exposure, Focus, and White Balance
Exposure controls how bright the recorded image appears and how much highlight and shadow detail is retained. Aperture, shutter time or shutter angle, and sensor gain or ISO all influence the image. Changing one setting may affect motion blur, depth of field, or noise, so exposure decisions involve trade-offs.
For natural-looking motion, a common starting point is a shutter time about half the duration of each frame interval, such as about 1/50 second at 25 frames per second. This is a convention, not a law. Faster shutter times create crisper motion; slower shutter times create more blur. Lighting powered by the electrical grid can also flicker, so you should test settings under the actual lights and follow local equipment guidance.
Focus directs attention. Autofocus can be useful, but always confirm that it is following the intended subject. Manual focus gives more control when focus must stay fixed or move predictably.
White balance tells the camera what should appear neutral under the current lighting. Automatic white balance can change during a shot, so a controlled production often benefits from a fixed or custom white balance. If light sources with very different color temperatures are mixed, decide whether to correct, replace, reposition, gel, or deliberately keep the difference.
Composition and the Rule of Thirds
Composition organizes visual information. The rule of thirds is a useful starting point: imagine a three-by-three grid and consider placing important subjects or horizons near the grid lines or intersections. It is a guideline, not a requirement. Centered, symmetrical, negative-space, and deliberately unbalanced compositions can also be effective when they support the message.

Shot Sizes and Coverage
Common shot sizes include the wide shot, medium shot, close-up, and extreme close-up. A wide shot explains location and spatial relationships. A medium shot often balances a person with their action. A close-up directs attention to a face, control, tool, label, or detail.
Record enough coverage for the edit. If a worker demonstrates a procedure, you might capture a wide master shot for context, a medium shot for body movement, close-ups of hands and controls, and cutaways of safety signs or results. Overlapping the action across takes gives the editor choices.
Sound Basics
Audiences may tolerate an imperfect image more easily than dialogue they cannot understand. Treat sound as a separate technical responsibility, even when one person operates both camera and microphone.

Microphone Position and Monitoring
The most important practical principle is often distance: a suitable microphone placed closer to the wanted sound usually captures a stronger direct signal relative to room noise. A shotgun microphone on a boom can be positioned close to a speaker while staying outside the frame. A lavalier microphone can remain close when a speaker moves. An on-camera microphone is convenient for reference or fast-moving work, but it may be too far away for clean dialogue.
Wear headphones when the recording system allows it. Meters cannot reveal rustling clothing, radio interference, hum, traffic, wind, handling noise, or a loose connector. Listen while you watch the level.
Digital clipping occurs when the signal reaches the system's maximum level. Leave safe headroom rather than trying to record as close to the maximum as possible. Exact targets depend on the equipment and workflow, but spoken peaks should stay comfortably below the digital ceiling.
Room Tone, Wild Sound, and Sync
Record room tone in each important location: a short period of the natural background sound without intentional speech or action. Editors can use it to smooth dialogue edits. Record useful wild sound too, such as machine ambience, footsteps, doors, tools, or environmental sound, when it is safe and relevant.
If picture and sound are recorded on separate devices, create a visible and audible sync point. After recording, verify that the audio file exists and is correctly associated with the take. Never assume that a level meter moving during the take guarantees a usable recording.
Lighting Basics
Lighting has three jobs in basic production: provide sufficient exposure, direct attention, and support the intended mood or clarity. In workplace and training videos, the first priority is often to make people, controls, labels, and actions easy to see.
Three-Point Lighting
A classic three-point lighting setup uses a key light as the main source, a fill light to control shadow contrast, and a back light or rim light to separate the subject from the background. You do not always need all three lights. The value of the model is that it helps you think about direction, contrast, and separation.


Hard, Soft, Available, and Motivated Light
A relatively small or distant source tends to create harder-edged shadows. A larger source relative to the subject, or diffusion placed appropriately, tends to create softer transitions. Windows, practical lamps, ceilings, walls, reflectors, and existing industrial or office lighting can all contribute to a scene.
"Motivated" lighting means that a designed light appears consistent with a believable source in the scene, such as a window or work lamp. For a vocational demonstration, motivation matters less than safety and visibility, but thinking about where light seems to come from can make the result feel natural.
Working Safely and Professionally
Video production creates ordinary workplace risks as well as media-specific ones. Follow your organization's risk assessment, equipment instructions, electrical rules, and supervision requirements.
Practical production safety includes:
- Keep walkways clear and route cables so they do not create trip hazards.
- Use stable stands, correct mounting hardware, and appropriate weights or restraints where required.
- Do not place lights, stands, or crew where they block exits, safety equipment, machine controls, or emergency routes.
- Treat hot fixtures, batteries, mains power, and damaged cables as hazards and follow approved procedures.
- Ask before filming in workshops, construction areas, laboratories, kitchens, health settings, roads, warehouses, or other controlled environments.

Use music, photographs, fonts, logos, footage, and graphics only when you have a valid right or licence to use them. Keep licence records with the project.
Editing and Post-Production
Editing turns recorded material into a structured experience for the audience. A non-linear editor usually provides bins or folders, source and program viewers, a timeline, tracks, trimming tools, audio controls, effects, titles, and export functions.

Organize Before You Cut
Create a predictable project structure. Separate video, audio, graphics, music, project files, exports, and documents. If the software supports bins or collections, use names that describe content rather than vague labels such as "new" or "misc".
Back up original camera files before deleting cards. For larger projects, consider a second independent copy in another approved location. Follow workplace rules for secure storage and personal data.
Rough Cut, Fine Cut, and B-Roll
Build the rough cut around meaning. Ask whether the order makes sense without effects. Remove repetition, weak takes, and material that does not support the brief. Then refine timing and continuity.
Use B-roll to show what the speaker is talking about, hide necessary dialogue edits, clarify a process, or add context. B-roll should carry information. Random decorative footage can confuse the audience.
Watch for continuity. A hand should not suddenly jump position between adjacent shots unless the edit is intentionally discontinuous. Screen direction, eye line, object position, clothing, tool state, and lighting can all affect whether a cut feels coherent.
Sound, Color, Titles, and Captions
Balance dialogue first. Music and effects should support rather than mask important speech. Remove obvious unwanted noise where practical, create smooth ambience across cuts, and use fades only when they help the transition.
Color correction aims to make shots technically consistent in exposure, white balance, and color. A creative color grade can then establish a look, but it should not reduce the visibility of essential safety details or product information.
Titles must be readable on the intended screen. Keep spelling, names, job titles, dates, units, and terminology accurate. Captions improve accessibility and can help viewers in noisy workplaces or when sound is muted. Check captions against the final spoken content rather than assuming automatic transcription is correct.
Quality Control and Delivery
A video is not finished when the timeline looks finished. It is finished when the delivered file meets the brief and has passed a systematic check.
Picture check: look for accidental black frames, flash frames, poor focus, clipped highlights, unintended camera shake, incorrect crops, missing graphics, spelling errors, inconsistent color, or visible confidential information.
Sound check: listen on headphones and, when practical, ordinary speakers. Check dialogue clarity, abrupt cuts, clipping, unwanted noise, music balance, synchronization, and silence where sound should exist.
Content check: confirm that procedures, names, measurements, warnings, logos, dates, contact details, and claims are correct and approved.
Accessibility check: review captions for wording, timing, speaker changes where needed, and meaningful non-speech information. Make sure essential information is not communicated only by color or tiny text.
Export check: confirm resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, codec, container, file name, and any platform or client specification. H.264 video in an MP4 container is a common delivery combination, but the required specification always takes priority.
Watch the actual exported file from beginning to end. A correct timeline does not guarantee a correct export.
