Sustainable Transport



Introduction

Sustainable transport means moving people and goods in ways that meet our needs while causing less harm to people and the planet. It includes choices such as walking, cycling, buses, trains, trams, shared rides, and cleaner vehicles. A transport choice is more sustainable when it uses less energy, creates less pollution, uses space wisely, supports health, and is safe and fair for many people.

You already make transport choices. You may walk to school, ride a bicycle, take a bus, travel by train, or go by car. Not every choice is possible for every person or every journey. Distance, weather, disability, safety, cost, and local transport services all matter. The goal is not to say that one vehicle is always “good” or “bad.” The goal is to compare choices and make the best realistic decision for each trip.

Look at the picture above. Different ways of travelling can have different environmental effects. Think about what might change when one person travels alone in a car compared with many people sharing one bus or train.

Think about it: Which transport methods from the video are available where you live? Which ones would you like to use more often?


Why Transport Matters

Transport connects you with school, friends, shops, parks, sports, health care, and other places. It also moves food, clothes, books, building materials, and many other goods. Because transport is part of everyday life, changes in transport can affect the environment, our health, and the design of towns and cities.

Many motor vehicles burn fuels such as petrol or diesel. Burning fuel releases gases and particles into the air. Some gases, especially carbon dioxide, add to climate change. Traffic can also create noise and take up large areas for roads and parking. Sustainable transport tries to reduce these problems while still helping people reach the places they need.

Safe walking and cycling can add physical activity to an ordinary day. Good public transport can carry many people in one vehicle. Cleaner vehicles can reduce some forms of pollution. Well-designed streets can give space to people walking, cycling, using wheelchairs, waiting for buses, and crossing roads safely.

Transport and Climate

A vehicle's climate effect depends on more than one thing. Important questions include: How much energy does it use? Where does that energy come from? How many people are travelling? How far is the journey? How was the vehicle made?

Walking and ordinary cycling do not need fuel for the journey itself. Buses and trains use energy, but they can move many passengers at once. A full bus usually uses road space more efficiently than many separate cars carrying the same number of people. Electric vehicles do not produce exhaust gases from a tailpipe while driving, but electricity generation, batteries, roads, and vehicle production still use energy and materials. This is why sustainable transport is about the whole system, not just one type of engine.


Transport and Air Quality

Air pollution means harmful substances are present in the air. Road traffic can add pollution through exhaust, tyre wear, brake wear, and dust from roads. Cleaner vehicles can reduce exhaust pollution, while fewer unnecessary car trips can reduce traffic overall.

Plants can make streets pleasant, but trees alone cannot solve traffic pollution. A cleaner transport system combines good public transport, safe walking and cycling routes, sensible land use, and low-emission technology.


Transport and Health

Walking, cycling, and wheeling can be forms of physical activity. When routes are safe and accessible, active travel can help people move their bodies as part of daily life. Less traffic can also mean less noise and more space for people.

Safety comes first. A route is not truly sustainable if people cannot use it safely. Good crossings, sidewalks, cycle paths, lighting, slower traffic where needed, and clear rules all help.

Main Types of Sustainable Transport


Walking and Wheeling

For short journeys, walking can be simple, healthy, and low-impact. “Wheeling” can include using a wheelchair or another mobility aid. Streets should be designed so that people with different abilities can travel safely and independently.

A good walking route may include a smooth sidewalk, safe crossings, shade, lighting, places to rest, and enough time to cross the road. Children also need routes that adults and families consider safe.

Mini task: Imagine this is part of your route to school. Name two things you would check before deciding whether it is a safe walking route.


Cycling

A bicycle can cover a longer distance than walking while using human power. Bicycles also need much less space than cars. Safe cycling depends on suitable routes, careful behaviour, and local road rules.

Before riding, check that the bicycle is in safe condition. Use lights or reflectors when needed, wear suitable protective equipment, and follow the rules where you live. Never assume that a driver has seen you.

A separated path can reduce conflicts between people walking, cycling, and driving. Good design should still make crossings and junctions clear.


Buses, Trains, and Trams

Public transport is shared transport that follows routes or schedules and is available to the public. It can include buses, trains, trams, metros, and ferries. Public transport can move many people without needing one car for each passenger.

Public transport works best when stops are easy to reach, services are reliable, information is clear, and vehicles are accessible. A bus or train journey may also include walking or cycling at the beginning and end.

Electric Vehicles

An electric vehicle uses electricity to power a motor. Electric cars, buses, bicycles, and trains can all use electricity. Electric motors are efficient, and battery-electric road vehicles have no tailpipe exhaust while driving.

However, electricity must be produced, batteries require materials, and vehicles still need roads and parking. An electric car can therefore be cleaner in important ways without solving every transport problem. A city full of electric cars can still have traffic jams. This is why walking, cycling, public transport, and shared travel remain important.

Question: Why might an electric bus be useful in a busy city? Think about both the number of passengers and the type of energy it uses.


Sharing and Combining Transport

Transport can be more efficient when people share vehicles or combine different travel methods. Carpooling means two or more people who could have travelled separately share one car. Bike-sharing allows people to borrow bicycles for short trips. A journey may also combine cycling and a train.

This is called intermodal travel: using more than one type of transport in one journey. For example, you might cycle to a station, take a train, and walk from the final station to your destination.


Designing Better Streets and Cities

A sustainable transport system is not only about vehicles. It is also about how places are designed. If homes, schools, shops, parks, and services are closer together, some trips can be shorter. If sidewalks and cycle routes connect safely, more people may be able to travel without a car.

A well-designed street can include space for:

  1. people walking and wheeling: sidewalks, crossings, ramps, and resting places
  2. people cycling: protected lanes, safe junctions, and bicycle parking
  3. shared transport: bus lanes, stops, tram tracks, and stations
  4. green areas: trees and planting that add shade and comfort
  5. safe traffic movement: clear signs, suitable speeds, and good visibility

A good system also considers people who have fewer choices. A child, an older person, a person with a disability, or a family without a car should still be able to reach important places. This idea is called accessibility.

A Simple Way to Compare Journeys

You can compare transport choices by asking five questions:

  1. Energy: How much energy does the journey use?
  2. Pollution: Does it create exhaust or greenhouse gas emissions?
  3. Space: How much road or parking space is needed?
  4. Safety: Is the route safe for the people using it?
  5. Access: Can different people use it, including people with disabilities?

You can also ask about time, cost, weather, and comfort. A sustainable choice should be realistic. For a very short trip, walking may work well. For a long trip across a city, a train may be more practical. For a person carrying heavy equipment, another option may be needed.

There is no single score that works everywhere. The useful skill is to compare the whole journey and explain your reasoning.


The Avoid–Shift–Improve Idea

Transport planners often use three simple kinds of action. You can understand them like this:

Avoid unnecessary motor travel when possible. This might mean choosing a nearby shop, joining activities close to home, or planning several errands together.

Shift a journey to a more sustainable mode when it is safe and practical. This might mean walking, cycling, taking public transport, or sharing a ride.

Improve the vehicles and systems we still need. This can include cleaner fuels, electric buses, safer roads, better timetables, and more efficient delivery routes.

These ideas work best together. For example, an electric bus is an improvement, but it is even more useful when the bus route is reliable and many people choose to ride it.


Sustainable School Travel

School travel is a good place to study transport because many students make a similar trip every day. A school travel plan can ask:

  1. Where do students live in relation to the school?
  2. Which routes have safe sidewalks, crossings, or cycle paths?
  3. Where are the nearest bus or tram stops?
  4. Which places feel unsafe, crowded, or difficult to cross?
  5. Could some families safely walk, cycle, use public transport, or share rides more often?

Do not collect or publish private home addresses. A class map should use general areas or anonymous routes. Safety decisions should involve teachers, families, and local rules.

Responsible Choices and Fairness

It is easy to say, “Everyone should just walk or cycle,” but real life is more complicated. Some journeys are too far. Some roads are unsafe. Some people cannot walk or cycle. Public transport may be missing, expensive, or hard to use. Weather can also make active travel difficult.

Sustainable transport should therefore be fair. A fair system gives people useful choices instead of blaming them for options they do not have. Communities can improve choices by building safer routes, making transport accessible, and listening to people who use the system.

You can help by observing your surroundings, using safe travel habits, sharing evidence, and suggesting practical improvements.
