Search Engine Optimisation Basics



Introduction

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the practice of improving a website so that search engines can understand its content and people can discover useful pages through search. In this aiMOOC, you learn the foundations of SEO through workplace-oriented examples that suit apprentices, trainees, and vocational students in marketing, retail, media, web development, e-commerce, administration, and related occupations.

SEO is not a trick for forcing a page into first place. Search engines use automated systems to discover, process, and rank web content, and no legitimate SEO method can guarantee a particular ranking. Your task is to make a website technically accessible, clearly structured, useful for its intended audience, and easy to evaluate with reliable data.

The diagram above gives a simplified view of a search engine. Modern search systems are more complex, but the basic idea remains useful: pages are discovered, information is organised in an index, and results are selected in response to a user's query.

By the end of the course, you should be able to explain how crawling, indexing, and ranking differ; carry out a basic SEO audit; improve page titles, content, links, images, and site structure; recognise common technical problems; use performance data; and propose ethical improvements for a real workplace website.


What SEO Is For

SEO connects three perspectives: the user, the organisation, and the search engine. A useful SEO decision should make sense from all three perspectives.

For the user, the page should answer a real need clearly and efficiently. For the organisation, the page should support a meaningful goal such as enquiries, bookings, applications, product discovery, customer service, or sales. For a search engine, the page should be discoverable, understandable, indexable when appropriate, and connected to the rest of the web.

In vocational practice, you might optimise a product category for a retail shop, a service page for a local trades business, a recruitment page for an employer, a help article for a software company, or an event page for a training provider. The business context changes, but the basic workflow is similar: understand the audience, improve the page, check technical access, measure outcomes, and refine the work.


Organic search refers to unpaid search results selected by the search engine's systems. Paid search refers to advertisements purchased through an advertising platform. SEO focuses mainly on organic visibility. Paying for an advertisement does not buy a higher organic ranking.

A vocational marketer should keep the two channels separate when reporting results. Paid campaigns can provide useful market information, but organic performance should be measured with its own data and goals.


How Search Engines Work

A useful beginner model contains three stages: crawling, indexing, and serving or ranking results.


Crawling

A web crawler is automated software that follows links and requests web resources. Crawlers discover new and updated URLs through links, sitemaps, previous visits, and other discovery methods. A page cannot be evaluated for normal search visibility if the search engine cannot access the content it needs.

Crawling is not the same as indexing. A crawler may fetch a page without the page later being stored in the searchable index.


Indexing

During indexing, a search engine processes a page and tries to understand its text, images, video, metadata, language, and relationships with other pages. Search systems may group duplicate or highly similar URLs and select a canonical URL as the representative version.

Indexing is not guaranteed. A technically reachable page can still remain unindexed because of quality, duplication, directives, design problems, or other factors.


Serving and Ranking

When a person searches, the search engine tries to return useful, relevant results from its index. The ordering can depend on many signals and on context such as the query, language, location, and device. Modern ranking systems are complex, so avoid claims that one isolated factor always determines position.

Workplace example: A bicycle repair business may have pages for brake repair, wheel truing, and annual servicing. A query such as "bike brake repair near me" expresses a different need from "how do hydraulic bike brakes work". The first may favour local service information; the second may favour explanatory content.


Search Intent and Keyword Research

Search intent is the purpose behind a query. Before writing or changing a page, ask what the searcher is trying to accomplish. Common intentions include learning something, finding a specific site or place, comparing options, and completing an action such as buying or booking.

Keyword research is not the process of repeating a phrase as often as possible. It is a way to learn the language people use and the questions they ask. Start with the real products, services, problems, and terminology of the workplace. Then compare broader phrases with specific phrases.

For example, a training company could begin with "first aid course" and discover more specific needs such as "workplace first aid course", "first aid refresher training", or "first aid course for childcare staff". The most useful phrase is not automatically the one with the largest search volume. Relevance to the organisation's offer and the user's intent matters.

A simple vocational keyword workflow is:

  1. Audience analysis: Identify the people the page is meant to help and the task they want to complete.
  2. Keyword research: Collect realistic phrases from customer questions, site search, search suggestions, analytics, and search-performance tools.
  3. Search intent: Inspect what kind of result currently satisfies the query and decide whether your planned page fits that need.
  4. Content mapping: Assign a main topic and closely related subtopics to the most suitable existing or planned page.
  5. Evaluation: Measure whether the page earns relevant visibility and useful actions rather than judging success from rankings alone.


Useful, People-First Content

Search engines aim to surface useful material for people. Strong SEO content is therefore not a block of keywords written for a robot. It should be clear, accurate, original enough to add value, well organised, and appropriate for its audience.

You can improve a workplace page by answering the questions a customer genuinely asks, showing first-hand expertise where it matters, including evidence or specifications, making dates and responsibilities clear, and removing outdated information. A product page should help someone evaluate the product. A service page should explain what is offered, for whom, where, and what happens next. A how-to page should make the procedure understandable and safe.

Generative AI can support brainstorming, outlining, or editing, but publishing large quantities of low-value automated text is not a sound SEO strategy. Human review, factual checking, subject expertise, and original value remain important.


Headings and Page Structure

Use a clear page heading and meaningful subheadings so that users can scan the content. A heading should describe the section below it. Do not create a complicated hierarchy merely to insert keywords.

Short paragraphs, descriptive lists, tables where appropriate, and clear calls to action can improve usability. Good structure also helps assistive technology and makes the page easier to maintain.


Titles, Snippets, and Search Appearance

The title element is an important source search engines can use when creating the clickable title shown in search results. A good page title is unique, concise, descriptive, and accurate. In many content management systems, the page title is converted automatically into the HTML title element.

A meta description is a short summary supplied in page metadata. Search engines may use it when creating a result snippet, but they may instead select text from the page when that better matches the query. Write a useful description for people rather than treating it as guaranteed display text.

Search-result layouts change over time and can vary by query, device, country, and feature. Use screenshots to learn the parts of a result, not as a permanent template for what every user will see.

URLs, Site Structure, and Internal Links

A logical site structure helps both people and crawlers understand how pages relate to one another. Group related pages into sensible sections, use descriptive URLs where practical, and make important pages reachable through ordinary links.

An internal link points from one page of a website to another page on the same website. Internal links help users move between related information and help crawlers discover pages. The visible link text should usually give a meaningful clue about the destination. "View our apprenticeship application guide" is more informative than "click here".

A sitemap can provide a list of URLs that a site owner wants search engines to know about. It is especially useful for discovery on larger or more complex sites, but submitting a sitemap does not guarantee that every listed URL will be indexed.


Canonical URLs and Duplicate Content

Duplicate or near-duplicate content can appear for legitimate reasons, for example through filters, tracking parameters, regional versions, or alternative URL paths. Canonicalisation is the process of identifying the representative URL for a piece of content.

A site can signal a preferred canonical URL with redirects, canonical link elements, and consistent internal linking. Search engines can still choose a different canonical when their systems judge another URL to be more representative. For routine SEO work, avoid creating unnecessary duplicate URLs and keep signals consistent.


Technical SEO Basics

Technical SEO focuses on whether search systems can access, process, and understand the website reliably. You do not need to be a software engineer to perform a first technical check, but you should know when an issue needs to be escalated to a developer or system administrator.


robots.txt, Indexing Directives, and Access

A robots.txt file gives crawl instructions to compliant crawlers. It can be useful for controlling crawl access to areas that should not be fetched, but it is not a substitute for access control and should not be used to protect confidential information.

The illustration shows example robots.txt syntax. Search engines can differ in which optional directives they support, so check the documentation for the crawler you are managing.

Do not confuse crawl control with indexing control. If you need a publicly accessible page to stay out of a search index, use an appropriate supported indexing directive and make sure the crawler can access the page well enough to read that directive. For private information, use proper authentication or other security controls.


HTTP Status, Redirects, and Broken Pages

A healthy site returns appropriate HTTP status codes. A successful page usually returns a 2xx status. A permanent move should normally use an appropriate permanent redirect. A genuinely missing page should not pretend to be a successful page.

When a URL changes, update internal links and redirect the old URL to the closest relevant replacement where appropriate. Avoid long redirect chains and regularly check for broken links.


Mobile Access and Page Experience

Users search on phones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. A responsive design can adapt the same content to different screen sizes.

Core Web Vitals are user-experience metrics used to evaluate loading performance, responsiveness, and visual stability. Current commonly used "good" targets are Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint below 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift below 0.1. Treat these measures as part of a wider user experience rather than as a replacement for useful content.


Images and Media SEO

Images can bring people to a site through visual search and can also make ordinary pages more useful. Use clear, relevant images near the text they support. Compress files appropriately, choose suitable dimensions and formats, and avoid forcing users to download unnecessarily large assets.

Alt text is a concise text alternative for an image when the image conveys meaning. Good alt text supports accessibility and helps search engines understand the image in context. Do not fill alt text with repetitive keywords. Decorative images may need empty alternative text in HTML so that assistive technology can ignore them.

Video pages also benefit from descriptive titles, useful surrounding text, and accessible supporting information such as captions or transcripts.


Links, Reputation, and Promotion

Links connect the web. A backlink is a link to your site from another site. Useful links can help people discover a resource and can contribute signals used by search systems, but backlink quality cannot be reduced to a simple count.

SEO should improve visibility without deceiving users or search engines. Search-engine spam policies prohibit manipulative practices such as keyword stuffing, cloaking, doorway abuse, and other schemes designed primarily to distort ranking or mislead people.

Common beginner mistakes include creating a new page for every tiny keyword variation, copying competitor text, hiding text for crawlers, publishing unreviewed mass-generated content, changing URLs without redirects, blocking important resources accidentally, using vague page titles, and reporting rankings without checking whether traffic or conversions improved.

A professional SEO worker documents what was changed, why it was changed, when it was changed, and what happened afterwards. This makes the work auditable and helps a team learn from results.


Measuring SEO Performance

SEO is an iterative process. Decide what outcome matters, establish a baseline, make a controlled improvement where possible, and then observe the result over a suitable period.

Useful measures include impressions when a result is shown, clicks from search, click-through rate, average position as a rough visibility indicator, indexed-page status, conversions, leads, revenue, completed forms, bookings, and other meaningful user actions. No single metric tells the complete story.

Click-through rate can be calculated as:

CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100

A beginner audit should create a prioritised action list, not a pile of unexplained warnings. For each important page or template, ask four questions.

Relevance: Does the page satisfy a real audience need and match the organisation's offer?

Content: Is the page accurate, useful, clear, current, and distinct enough to deserve its own URL?

Technical access: Can crawlers reach the page and its important resources, and is the indexation intent correct?

Measurement: Can you observe search visibility and a meaningful business or service outcome?

Record each issue with evidence, impact, effort, owner, and recommended next action. A high-impact indexing problem on a key product category may deserve attention before a minor title improvement on a rarely visited page.


SEO in AI-Powered Search

Search experiences now include generative AI features as well as traditional lists of links. The core foundations still matter: crawlable pages, accurate indexing, clear structure, useful original content, and trustworthy information remain important for visibility.

Do not chase unsupported "AI optimisation hacks". Current guidance from major search engines continues to emphasise discoverability, content quality, technical clarity, and reliable signals.
