Introduction

The world's ocean is one huge, connected body of salt water. We often name different oceans, such as the Pacific and Atlantic, but water, currents, animals, and pollution can move between them. The ocean covers about 70 percent of Earth's surface, helps shape weather and climate, provides food and jobs, and supports an amazing variety of life.

Tiny ocean organisms matter too. Many kinds of phytoplankton use sunlight to make food and release oxygen. Together, ocean photosynthesizers produce roughly half of the oxygen made on Earth. Protecting the ocean therefore means protecting living systems that people and wildlife depend on.

In this aiMOOC, you will explore why healthy oceans matter, how human activities can harm them, and how communities can prevent damage and help ecosystems recover. You do not need to live near a coast to make a difference: water and litter from inland places can travel through streams and rivers toward the sea.

Why Healthy Oceans Matter


Ocean Life Is Connected

An ecosystem includes living things and the non-living surroundings they depend on. In the ocean, sunlight, water temperature, nutrients, rocks, sand, plants, algae, animals, and microbes interact. A change to one part can affect many other parts.

A food web shows feeding relationships. Phytoplankton can be eaten by tiny drifting animals, which can be eaten by fish. Larger fish, seabirds, turtles, and marine mammals may depend on many links in the same web. Healthy habitats give animals places to feed, hide, grow, and reproduce.


Coral Reefs, Mangroves, and Seagrass

Coral reefs are built by living coral animals and can provide shelter for many species. Reefs can be damaged by pollution, destructive activities, and unusually warm water. Protecting water quality and reducing climate pollution can help reefs face these pressures.

Mangroves grow along some warm coasts. Their tangled roots create shelter for young animals, hold sediment, and can reduce the force of waves. Seagrass meadows are underwater flowering plants. They provide food and nursery habitat and can trap carbon in plants and sediments.


People and Oceans

People depend on oceans for food, transportation, recreation, culture, science, and work. Coastal ecosystems can also help reduce erosion and wave energy. Because people use the ocean in many ways, protecting it often requires scientists, fishers, community members, businesses, Indigenous peoples, governments, and young people to share knowledge and make careful decisions.


Main Threats to Ocean Health


Marine Debris and Plastic Pollution

Marine debris is human-made material that is lost or thrown away and ends up in the ocean or other waterways. It can include bottles, food wrappers, fishing gear, foam, metal, glass, and many other objects. Wildlife can become tangled in debris or mistake it for food.

Plastic lasts a long time. Sunlight, waves, and wear can break larger plastic items into smaller pieces. Very small plastic pieces are called microplastics. Because they are small, they are difficult to remove once they spread through water and sand. Preventing plastic waste from escaping into the environment is usually more effective than trying to collect every tiny piece later.


How Pollution Travels from Land to Sea

You may live far from the coast and still be connected to the ocean. During rain, runoff flows over streets, school grounds, farms, and yards. It can carry litter, soil, oil, fertilizer, or other pollutants into drains, streams, and rivers. Many rivers eventually reach the sea.

A watershed is an area of land where water drains toward the same river, lake, or other body of water. Keeping streets and streams clean can therefore help places downstream.


Too Much Fishing and Bycatch

Fishing can provide food and livelihoods. Problems happen when fish are removed faster than populations can replace themselves. This is called overfishing. Healthy fisheries use rules and scientific information to help fish populations remain productive over time.

Bycatch is the accidental catch of animals that were not the target. Different fishing methods have different risks. Changes in gear, fishing locations, seasons, and rules can reduce unwanted catch in some fisheries.


Warming Seas and Ocean Acidification

Human activities that release large amounts of greenhouse gases are warming Earth's climate. The ocean absorbs much of the extra heat, so marine heat waves and warmer average temperatures can stress some ocean life. Very warm water can cause corals to lose the colorful algae that help feed them. This is called coral bleaching. A bleached coral is still alive at first, but long-lasting stress can make survival harder.

The ocean also absorbs some carbon dioxide from the air. When extra carbon dioxide dissolves in seawater, it changes the water's chemistry and lowers its pH. This process is called ocean acidification. It can make it harder for some organisms, including certain shellfish and corals, to build and maintain shells or skeletons.


Protecting Oceans: What Works?

Ocean protection works best when people prevent pollution, protect habitats, use resources carefully, and check whether actions are actually helping. One action cannot solve every problem, so communities often combine several approaches.


Prevent Waste Before It Reaches Water

Using fewer throwaway items, reusing durable products, sorting waste correctly, and keeping litter out of streets and drains can reduce the amount that reaches waterways. Recycling can help for materials accepted by local systems, but reducing unnecessary waste and reusing items are important too.

During a supervised cleanup, collect only items that are safe to handle. Wear gloves or use litter pickers, stay with an adult or teacher, and leave sharp objects, needles, chemicals, dead animals, or other dangerous materials for trained adults. Wash your hands afterward.


Protect and Restore Habitats

Healthy habitats can support many species at once. Communities may restore mangroves, seagrass, salt marshes, dunes, oyster reefs, or coral habitat, depending on the local ecosystem. Good restoration starts with understanding what belongs naturally in that place and what caused the damage.

A marine protected area is a defined ocean or coastal place managed for long-term conservation. Different protected areas have different rules. Some allow fishing or recreation under certain conditions, while others have stricter limits. The goal is to protect important natural or cultural resources.


Use Science and Community Knowledge

Scientists measure water temperature, species numbers, litter, water chemistry, and many other clues. Community members can contribute observations through well-designed citizen science projects. Fishers and coastal communities may also hold detailed knowledge about local seasons, species, and places.

Good decisions use evidence. Before sharing an ocean claim, ask who made it, what evidence supports it, whether the information is current, and whether other reliable sources agree.
