  2. File management: Keep the original, use meaningful filenames, and create a working copy.
  3. Image inspection: Check dimensions, orientation, focus, exposure, color, noise, and unwanted objects.

A calibrated display and controlled lighting improve consistency, but you can still follow good practice without specialist equipment: compare against known neutrals, avoid extreme saturation, check skin tones and branded colors carefully, and review the final export on the target device when possible.


Layers and Non-Destructive Editing

Layers allow you to separate image elements and adjustments instead of changing everything directly on one flattened image. This supports revision and makes it easier to compare versions. Name important layers so another person can understand the file.

A layer mask controls which parts of a layer are visible without permanently erasing the hidden pixels. In many editors, white areas of a mask reveal the layer, black areas conceal it, and gray values create partial visibility. Adjustment layers, smart objects, linked files, and equivalent program-specific features can also support non-destructive editing.


Selections, Masks, and Background Work

Restoration can involve repairing damage while respecting the historical image. Keep the original scan unchanged and document significant interventions. In documentary or evidence-based images, do not remove information that changes the meaning of the scene.


Resizing, Resolution, and Resampling

Pixel dimensions describe the width and height of a digital raster image. Resampling changes the number of pixels. Reducing an image for a website usually discards pixels; enlarging requires the software to estimate new pixel values and cannot recreate unlimited real detail.

Resolution values such as pixels per inch become especially important when planning physical print size. For screen delivery, required pixel dimensions are usually more useful than a PPI number by itself. Always follow the specification from the printer, platform, customer, or workplace.


File Formats and Compression

JPEG is widely used for photographs and supports adjustable lossy compression, but repeated saving can reduce quality. PNG supports lossless compression and transparency and is useful for graphics, screenshots, and cut-out images. TIFF is common in high-quality imaging and archival workflows. WebP can provide efficient web delivery. The editable source format of your software—such as XCF or PSD—should normally be retained when future changes are expected.

Image editing can inform, persuade, beautify, document, or deceive. Your responsibility depends on context. Removing a temporary dust spot from a product photo is different from removing a safety defect from an inspection image. Enhancing contrast for clarity is different from fabricating evidence.

When an image contains people, consider consent, dignity, and realistic representation. Avoid unnecessary body alteration or misleading changes. Copyright also applies to source images, logos, fonts, textures, and stock assets. A file being easy to find online does not mean you have permission to reuse it. Use licensed, commissioned, employer-owned, or appropriately open material and preserve required attribution information.
