The picture above shows dangerous goods being transported by rail. A trained worker should notice that dangerous-goods work depends on clear identification, correct packaging, hazard communication, safe handling, and compliance with the rules that apply to the transport mode and jurisdiction.
Important safety boundary: Awareness training helps you recognize and report hazards. It does not by itself authorize you to classify dangerous goods, select regulated packaging, prepare transport documents, sign declarations, load restricted combinations, or clean up spills. Perform only the tasks for which you are trained, competent, authorized, and equipped, and always follow your employer's procedures and the current legal requirements.

Why Dangerous Goods Awareness Matters
Dangerous goods incidents can develop quickly. A leaking drum may release toxic or corrosive material. An incompatible chemical combination can produce heat, fire, gas, or pressure. A damaged lithium battery can enter thermal runaway and ignite. A compressed-gas cylinder can become dangerous if its valve is damaged. A package that looks ordinary may still contain regulated material.

The rail tank car above carries chlorine and displays hazard information for transport. You should not try to identify an unknown substance by smell, touch, or guesswork. Instead, use labels, documents, the Safety Data Sheet, workplace records, and qualified personnel.
Regulations and Your Role
Dangerous goods are regulated through international, regional, national, and sometimes local rules. The United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods provide a model framework that influences many transport systems. Different modes then apply detailed requirements, such as road rules, rail rules, the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code for sea transport, and aviation requirements used by authorities and the International Air Transport Association.
Rules change, and different countries can implement them differently. For this reason, a safe worker does not rely on memory alone. You should know where your organization keeps current procedures and regulatory information, and you should ask a competent person when a task is outside your training.
Recognizing Dangerous Goods
The Nine UN Transport Hazard Classes
The UN transport system groups dangerous goods into nine main hazard classes. Several classes contain divisions. The table below is an awareness summary, not a substitute for formal classification.

This is one example of a transport hazard label for an explosive division. Do not assume that colour or symbol alone is enough to identify a product. Read the complete mark or label and check the shipping information.
GHS Pictograms and Transport Labels Are Not the Same System
The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals supports workplace and supply-chain hazard communication for chemicals. A GHS label can include a product identifier, signal word, hazard statements, precautionary statements, supplier information, and pictograms.



GHS pictograms help communicate hazards such as acute toxicity or oxidizing properties. Transport labels and placards serve a different regulatory purpose. A product may need both workplace hazard communication and transport dangerous-goods markings. Never replace one system with the other unless the applicable rules specifically allow it.
After watching the video, explain to a partner how a pictogram, signal word, hazard statement, and precautionary statement work together. Then identify one reason why a workplace label cannot automatically replace a transport label.
UN Numbers, Proper Shipping Names, and Packing Groups
Many dangerous goods are assigned a four-digit UN number and a Proper Shipping Name. Together with the hazard class, subsidiary hazards, packing group where applicable, and other regulatory information, these identifiers help trained personnel select the correct requirements.

The orange panel shown above is an ADR-style transport identification example. Depending on the operation and rule set, numbers can help emergency responders and trained transport personnel identify hazards. You should copy information accurately when reporting an incident; do not guess a missing digit or invent a product name.
Where packing groups are assigned, they indicate the degree of danger for packaging purposes:
- Packing Group I: great danger.
- Packing Group II: medium danger.
- Packing Group III: lower danger among the regulated goods to which packing groups apply.
Not every dangerous good uses a packing group. Always check the current rules instead of assuming that every class follows the same pattern.
Marks, Labels, and Placards
A mark can communicate information such as a UN number, orientation requirement, limited-quantity status, or battery handling information. A label is normally attached to a package to communicate a transport hazard class or division. A placard is a larger hazard sign used on cargo transport units, tanks, containers, or vehicles when required.


Terminology and display rules vary by regulation. Your task at awareness level is to notice whether required information appears to be present, legible, undamaged, and consistent with the paperwork, and to report anything unusual to a competent person.
Lithium Batteries as a Workplace Example
Lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries are common in tools, laptops, e-bikes, power banks, vehicles, spare parts, and returned equipment. They can be dangerous goods in transport. Damage, defects, short circuits, incorrect packing, or inappropriate charging can increase fire risk.

If you notice a battery that is swollen, crushed, punctured, leaking, unusually hot, smoking, or otherwise damaged, do not place it into ordinary outbound shipping just because similar batteries are shipped routinely. Stop, keep people away as required by your site procedure, and report the condition to a trained person. Special provisions can apply to damaged or defective batteries.
Safety Data Sheets
A Safety Data Sheet or SDS is a structured source of information about a chemical product. GHS-based systems generally use a 16-section format. For practical workplace decisions, you should know how to find information about identification, hazards, first aid, firefighting, accidental release, handling and storage, exposure controls and personal protection, stability and reactivity, and transport information.
An SDS supports safe work, but it does not replace transport regulations or task-specific instructions. Section 14 can provide transport information, yet a trained shipper may still need current modal regulations to prepare a consignment correctly.
Safe Work Practices
Stop, Check, and Report
A useful awareness routine is Stop – Check – Report.
- Stop: Do not continue a task if the package is leaking, damaged, unidentified, incorrectly marked, unusually hot, giving off vapour, or otherwise suspicious.
- Check: From a safe position, check labels, package condition, documents, SDS information, and your work instruction only if you are trained to do so.
- Report: Contact the responsible supervisor, dangerous-goods specialist, safety officer, or emergency contact according to the site procedure.
This routine does not mean that every irregular package is an emergency. It means you avoid turning uncertainty into an unsafe action.
Packaging Integrity
Dangerous-goods packaging is part of the safety system. Depending on the material and mode, regulations can specify package type, performance testing, closures, absorbent material, inner and outer packaging, quantity limits, pressure resistance, or special provisions.
Before handling a package, look for obvious problems such as:
- Leaks, wet patches, stains, corrosion, bulging, severe dents, or damaged closures.
- Torn, missing, covered, or unreadable labels and marks.
- Evidence that the contents do not match the documentation.
- Damage that may have occurred during loading, storage, or transport.
Do not repair, overpack, relabel, vent, open, or transfer the contents of a regulated package unless that action is part of your authorized role and procedure.
Storage and Segregation
Some dangerous goods are incompatible. If they mix during a leak or fire, they can react violently, produce toxic gases, intensify combustion, or damage containment. Segregation means keeping incompatible materials apart according to the applicable rules and site risk assessment.

Safe storage also depends on correct containers, ventilation where required, spill containment, protection from heat and ignition sources, stock control, access restrictions, and emergency planning. Never create your own compatibility rule from memory. Use the approved storage matrix, SDS information, and current regulations.
Loading, Unloading, and Manual Handling
Loading and unloading combine chemical hazards with ordinary workplace risks such as moving vehicles, forklifts, falling loads, pinch points, poor lifting technique, and slips or trips. Before work starts, confirm that:
- You understand the task and the exclusion zones.
- The package is in acceptable condition.
- Required vehicle or site checks have been completed.
- The handling equipment is suitable and inspected.
- Loads can be secured against movement.
- Incompatible goods are managed according to the applicable segregation rules.
- Required personal protective equipment is available and correctly used.
PPE is important, but it is not permission to approach an unknown leak. Engineering controls, safe systems of work, training, and emergency procedures remain essential.
Transport Modes and Modal Rules
A shipment can move by road, rail, sea, inland waterway, or air. The same substance may face different quantity limits, packaging instructions, documentation requirements, or prohibitions depending on the mode. Air transport is especially sensitive to pressure, fire, and battery risks, while sea transport places strong emphasis on stowage and segregation in ships and cargo transport units.

Emergency Awareness
If you discover a spill, leak, damaged package, fire, unusual odour, vapour, or other dangerous-goods incident, your first responsibility is to avoid becoming another casualty.
Use your site emergency procedure. Typical awareness actions include:
- Stop work and keep a safe distance.
- Warn people nearby and prevent unnecessary access if this can be done safely.
- Raise the alarm and contact the designated emergency or supervisory personnel.
- Give accurate information from labels, placards, UN numbers, documents, or the SDS only if you can obtain it without exposure.
- Follow instructions about evacuation, first aid, isolation, or emergency services.
Do not touch, smell, taste, open, move, neutralize, wash away, or clean an unknown release unless you are specifically trained and equipped to do so. Do not assume that water is always a safe firefighting or cleanup choice; some substances react dangerously with water.
Exposure and First Aid Awareness
If exposure occurs, follow the site emergency plan and product-specific first-aid information. Get professional medical help when required. Different substances need different responses, so a generic treatment can be inappropriate. The SDS can support trained first-aiders and medical personnel by providing product information and recommended measures.
Report even a small exposure if your workplace procedure requires it. Early reporting helps protect you and allows the organization to investigate the cause.
Workplace Scenarios
Scenario: The Leaking Drum
You are asked to move a drum in a storeroom. You notice a wet patch underneath it, but the label is partly hidden. A safe awareness response is to stop, keep clear, prevent others from casually approaching, and report the problem. You should not rotate the drum just to read the label if that could spread the leak.
Think about it: What information would you safely provide to your supervisor, and what actions would be outside your authority?
Scenario: The Returned Power Tool Battery
A customer returns a battery-powered tool. The battery casing is cracked and the battery feels warm. Your normal process is to place returns into a shipping cage.
